Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Are you Greg Koch? If you're not, then this is not your signature which means it's not your own work. The signature might be OK to license as {{PD-signature}} per COM:SIG, but you shouldn't be claiming something you didn't create as your own. For example, taking a photo of a painting painted by another person, does not make you the copyright holder of this painting; moreover, taking a photo of a non-copyright-eligible 2D work doesn't generate a new copyright per Commons:2D copying. A {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} means you are (1) the creator of the work and (2) the work is eligible for copyright protection. Both conditions have to be met for that license to properly be used.

On the other hand, if you are Greg Koch, you would meet (1) but (2) probably still means the signature is not eligible for copyright protection. Moreover, you'd have a conflict of interest with respect to anything written about you on Wikipedia, which means you shouldn't really be directly editing en:Greg Koch (musician) at all. -- Marchjuly (talk) 14:50, 17 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Marchjuly Understood. I am not Greg Koch, but sure wish I could play a guitar half way as good. lol

I met Greg Koch at a local music store and asked for his signature so that I could put it on his wikipedia page (I started the Greg Koch article). Then I had to manipulate the signature to make a .png of it, and upload it to Wikimedia. I surmised: the signature or autograph is not a protected or copyrighted work like a painting. In other words nobody is harmed by the of this file and nobody has their art or logo or idea stolen. I got the idea and infobox template from seeing other Wikipedia pages with signatures. I guess it should be deleted if it is a copyright issue. The content of the article will not be harmed by the removal of the signature. Thanks! Lightburst (talk) 23:41, 17 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for clarifying this. I removed the "no permissions" template. However, I don't believe the your "manipulation" of the signature would be considered a COM:DW and thus establish a new copyright; so, I've removed the creative commons license as well. Even if the copyright holder provides the photograph, this person or entity still must provide a free license. Since this is a complex maneuver, we have a process for them to send in an email.
