Category discussion warning

Uncia uncia heads has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

<noinclude>

[edit]

Hello,
I don't mind you adding <noinclude> arround categories,
but, please, don't suppress interwiki links to articles like here.
Best regards Liné1 (talk) 23. jan 2012, 18:24

I have put them into the gallery page. --Kersti (talk) 18:56, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but they should also be in the category (You put both interwiki to category and interwiki to articles in articles). Regards Liné1 (talk) 21:12, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I intendet to put the category interwikis in the category an the article interwikis in the gallery - but put the <noinclude>-tag in the wrong place. --Kersti (talk) 21:16, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Could you just put both in both ? Regards Liné1 (talk) 06:22, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is no problem in this case, but if there are about 20 interwikis to articles and about ten links to categorys I want to have the articles in the gallery page and the categories in the category. --Kersti (talk) 13:29, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please my frend, stop putting interwiki in </noinclude>.
I like your concept of putting category in </noinclude> to have articles contain only <gallery>. (You know that I try to sell it to others)
But I really don't see why, we should maintain interwiki in both categories and articles (This I really don't see how I could sell it).
Don't tell me you want categories interwiki in categories and article interwiki in articles:
  1. There are mostly categories interwiki for families (no genus, no species) => your idea works only for families
  2. Categories and articles have different meaning in commons and wikipedia (there is no symetry): article are now only summaries+details of categories on commons. Where articles are the main purpose on wikipedias.
But most important of all it will really break all bot behavior.
Most of the bots are about interwiki so they will be bothered by your behavior. You will soon have 50% the interwiki out of the noinclude and 50% in the noinclude
I have fixed my bot to manage category between noinclude (I know only my bot to modify categories, but maybee some other bot developper will have to fix their bot and wont like it).
But if you put other things between noinclude then all the bots are dead.

Interesting idea

[edit]

Hello my friend,
We are discussion your good idea (article including the category) here.

New category

[edit]

In line with your new Category:Flying birds catching food from the water surface‎, i created Category:Flying birds in contact with water, as this is a rare subject. (new image just uploaded fits the category, there should be others).Mercurywoodrose (talk) 05:19, 6 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Tockus ruahae

[edit]

Hi,

I noticed you re categorized some of my birds as Category:Tockus ruahae. If you are an expert on subject, I will add rename suggestions on those files. Thank you for your efforts.

Regards, Nevit --Nevit Dilmen (talk) 17:21, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Being "Expert" was not the reason for the recategorisation. In the description the bird was called "Tockus (erythrorhynchus) ruahae" - in IOC this subspecies is recogniced as full species and as we usually follow IOC-classification I categoriced it accordingly. User:JMK was the one who added the subspecies. I guess, he was right to do so, as the subspecies is called "Tanzania Red-billed Hornbill" --Kersti (talk) 18:18, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello my friend,
Are you sure that Category:Species name templates is a good idea?
I understand the idea but can you imagine how many template you will have to create ?
Cheers Liné1 (talk) 12:32, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think, when people can have their own languages on commons-galleries and in file description pages, the description starts to be useful for people who are not working in science itself. I think, if I make a template for each bird species - and at least this I will manage - than others will start to do the same for other animals. That the insects and so on never will be ready is clear, but pages often used by people which are not biologists are managable.
I now know, how to use the :list for a VN-Template too:
Example: {{Turdus merula|short}} looks
Blackbird, Common Blackbird
Example: {{Turdus merula|medium}} looks
Blackbird, Common Blackbird  (Turdus merula, cat. )
Example: {{Turdus merula|long}} looks
Vernacular names [edit] [edit specified wikidata 'Common Blackbird'] Wikidata 'Common Blackbird' linked to current user_talk
Other Uses:
I made up a Template which makes use of {{Turdus merula|3}} and provides an additional editlink, so that people know, where to add additional translations. It will replace VN where the Species name template is ready.
Example: {{CN|Turdus merula}} looks
Vernacular names [edit] [edit specified wikidata 'Common Blackbird'] Wikidata 'Common Blackbird' linked to current user_talk
Example: {{TN|Turdus merula}} looks
Blackbird, Common Blackbird  (Turdus merula, cat. )
It is already used in the headlines of Acanthizidae, Acanthisittidae, in the descriptions in Acanthisittidae#More than one species and in File description pages like File:Likely an Inland thornbill.jpg
Australasian warblers  (Acanthizidae, cat. )
Picture: Speckled Warbler  (Pyrrholaemus sagittatus, cat. )
Example: [[File:Speckeld warbler.jpg|thumb|{{TNF|Acanthizidae|{{TN|Pyrrholaemus sagittatus}}}}]] looks
I start to use it now in Passeriformes in the galleries there.
--Kersti (talk) 13:35, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see some bugs in {{EN}}: it misses a div as you can see above + you need to find a template to diplay something instead of Bearbeiten.
By the way what does "EN" mean ?
Liné1 (talk) 14:35, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I just started to work on the template a few seconds ago, therefore faults are normal. And I think, there is already a list of translations for "bearbeiten" (which means "edit") somewhere hidden in Commons, I just have to find the template. Kersti (talk) 14:43, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think, now Template:EN is OK. Maybe Template CN for Common names is a better name for it? --Kersti (talk) 15:57, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Parulidae

[edit]

Hi Kersti - it is still out of date; all the images are still indexed under the old IOC 2.10 and need to be renamed to IOC 2.11 (e.g. there should be nothing left under the header Dendroica, and lots under Setophaga). It's a huge job to re-do it all. - MPF (talk) 22:57, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is work of some days - and as this a gallery page I made and as I did this kind of work all the year, you simply could have told me, that this page is the next one to edit. A few days later it would have been ready. As this old classification was correct half a year ago, there is no reason to redirect it. In most wikipedias the classification is much older. --Kersti (talk) 01:53, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Before Category:Species name templates grows too big for maintenance I think we should work the templates.
The templates need to be as simple as possible, if you want a chance to be followed.

  • I don't see the purpose of {{Turdus merula|2}}. The "Modify" link is really mandatory.
  • The taxon templates are too complex: first line of each template is too complex + use of Species name template
  • It is sad to have to use other templates like CN, TN, TNF in combination with {{Turdus merula}}
  • Too many templates involved (their documentation would have to reference all the possibilities):

A first solution

  1. We could integrate the first line of each template in a template like {{VNIncluded}} with a parameter template=<name of the template>
  2. We could integrate the code of VN2 and CN in {{VN}} with a single parameter edit=<name of the page/template to edit>
  3. {{VNIncluded}} could integrate the code of Species name template

Result:

  1. Only one template {{VNIncluded}} (instead of VN2, CN, TN, TNF, Species name template)
  2. {{VNIncluded}} would also display what Species name template currently displays (with {{#ifeq:{{NAMESPACE}}|Template|)
    1. {{Turdus merula|short}} would display what {{Turdus merula|1}} currently displays
    2. {{Turdus merula|medium}} would display what {{TN|Turdus merula}} currently displays
    3. {{Turdus merula|medium|<description>}} would display what {{TNF|Turdus merula}} currently displays
    4. {{Turdus merula|long}} would display what {{CN|Turdus merula}} currently displays
  3. {{VNIncluded}} would document everything: the 4 usage of the (with {{#ifeq:{{NAMESPACE}}|Template|)

Cheers Liné1 (talk) 12:53, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you can show me, that it works - and that it is possible to integrate additional template possibilities - it would be wonderful! The less there is in the species name template itself the better most Users will know what to do. Kersti (talk) 15:31, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, cool.
I am preparing a demo with {{Turdus merula}}, {{VNIncluded}} and no other template (I already added param |edit= to {{VN}} ;-))
I will tell you when it works.
Cheers Liné1 (talk) 15:56, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As you are experimenting with Turdus merula, I replaced it on the tree of life page. Kersti (talk) 19:23, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You can see the result in my sandbox. Feel free to modify it. Liné1 (talk) 08:25, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Better, we should use the official test page {{VNIncluded/testcases}}. Feel free to modify it. Liné1 (talk) 08:25, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How did you manage, that medium looks like TN? Kersti (talk) 09:10, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Simply search for medium in {{VNIncluded}} ;-) Liné1 (talk) 09:25, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the unidentified bird drawind (1, 2, 3...)
I like them so much, it is a pity when they are unidentified.
Thanks again. Liné1 (talk) 16:56, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, if you have time, there are others:

How to suppress CN, TN, TNF, Species name template

[edit]

Hello Kersti.
I am studying how to suppress the unneeded CN, TN, TNF, Species name template.

  1. TNF is no more used
  2. CN is no more used
  3. TN has 365 usages:
    {{TN|Acanthisittidae}} displays:
New Zealand wren  (Acanthisittidae, cat. )
    Result is correct !!!
=>First we migrate manually all Category:Species name templates (We can take all the time we want)
    =>Then we run Liné1bot to transform the 365 {{TN|<taxonName>}} by {{<taxonName>|medium}}

Cheers Liné1 (talk) 16:15, 25 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, all the templates are migrated.
Only the last step involving my bot is needed.
Cheers Liné1 (talk) 14:27, 27 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
