Grammar for naming ships of the Royal Navy

Royal Navy ships all use the prefix HMS (Her Majesty's Ship) before the ship name. So the correct grammar to use when referring to the ship is to omit the definitive article "The". Otherwise, the words would read as follows: "the Her Majesty's Ship ______", which is clearly grammatically wrong.

So the correct grammar is simply "HMS ______".

Ships of other navies follow different conventions. One example being the United States. Its ships use the prefix "USS" so adding the definitive article to read "the USS _____" is perfectly OK, although simply "USS _____" is also OK.
