Category for Cantonese pronunciation

[edit]

Can I move your pronunciation files with "yue" in name like File:Zh-yue-滑捋捋.ogg from Category:Chinese pronunciation to Category:Cantonese pronunciation? --Derbeth talk 11:08, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Derbeth: sure! It should probably be renamed to have a yue- suffix as well. Justinrleung (talk) 15:33, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion

[edit]
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Requesting admin rights

[edit]

Hello Justin, I just noticed there is a large amount of backlog on the ACC and SO projects, so I requested admin abilities to merges files. Your vote would be helpful, as I'am in difficulty. Yug (talk) 18:39, 29 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Justin ! Thanks for visiting the RfA page and voting, I appreciate (and I naturally think it was the best for the project). I unfortunately face of a barrage due to my "low" involvement this past few years, and the human environment is clearly more hostile than a decade ago. I give my RfA 2 days, I'am then likely to withdraw it. I will also cancel my revamp as I do not wish to get into the procedural limbo of ACC and SO projects clean up via documentation of each reasoning and choice to support my request for deletions. Sorry for that. Yug (talk) 20:12, 29 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Yug: I'm sorry to see that this has turned into something political. I do hope you can still work on ACC and SO without admin rights. Justinrleung (talk) 06:45, 30 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

User language list: cmn-3

[edit]

Something seems to have gone wrong with the cmn-3 item of your "User language" list. The explanation reads "This user has advanced knowledge of English" but cmn is actually the ISO 639-3 language code for Mandarin Chinese, not English. —Cheers, LiliCharlie (talk) 21:04, 12 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

We usually keep redirects of moved files

[edit]

Hi. When a file has been at a location for a long period, and then moved, we would usually keep that redirect. If someone has linked to the file externally, we don't want to break that link, remembering that Wikimedia allows external pulls of our images.  — billinghurst sDrewth 13:26, 21 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Billinghurst: It's the same problem that User:Wargaz has. I'll see if I can figure something out on English Wiktionary to get around this. Justinrleung (talk) 19:13, 21 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Billinghurst: I can't seem to get the isRedirect property of Scribunto title objects to work for these image files. Do you know if there is a way to know whether a file is redirecting using Lua? Justinrleung (talk) 00:06, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I am not the Scribunto expert though I would guess that it is not a redirect at the other wiki, only here at Commons. Someone like Jarekt may be able to help, otherwise it is a question to ask mw: or consider whether it is something that could be neatly handled through Wikidata where these presumably are specific items.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:55, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have never worked with "isRedirect property of Scribunto title objects", so I I only know what is in documentation. --Jarekt (talk) 17:28, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Billinghurst and Jarekt: Thanks for your replies. The templates currently rely heavily on the naming conventions. If there are bad redirects and these redirects can't be detected, then the templates in many Wiktionaries would go bad. Using Wikidata, while doable, would require additional data modules that won't automatically update when particular files are available. It would be a very big inconvenience. I'm not familiar with the rules here at Commons, but if it really is against policy to delete these files, that's what we'll have to work with. Could you please point me to the policy relating to this? I'll try to ask people at MediaWiki to see if there's any way to detect if these files are redirects across wikis. Justinrleung (talk) 22:37, 25 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I am sorry but I am lost. What is this discussion about? About Commons policies, we do not have very many of those, but we do rely a lot on consensus, tradition (until it no longer makes sense) and listing to inputs from other users. --Jarekt (talk) 02:58, 26 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Jarekt: Sorry for not giving you enough context. It's about deletion requests like Revision #297801262 or Revision #297783682. If I remember correctly, User:Wargaz and I have made similar requests before and they have been deleted as we wanted them to be. Billinghurst is of the opinion that we should not delete these, so I wanted to know if there's any policy that would apply here to back up their opinion. Justinrleung (talk) 03:10, 26 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The issue with deleting redirects is that so many hardwire links to pages on Commons that very often I am following some link to Commons page and arrive at moved and deleted page. It is very disruptive. That is why we generally prefer redirects if the page was moved. as for detecting redirects, it is quite easy see : gives "0" and which gives "0". --Jarekt (talk) 03:45, 26 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Jarekt: I see, but is that just common practice or is there some place where this is written out? As for detecting redirects, I believe the issue is that it is not a redirect at other wikis for some reason, as Billinghurst has guessed. I've copied the code from Module:Test to wikt:Module:User:Justinrleung and tested the same invoke statements at wikt:User:Justinrleung/sandbox, but I get 0 for both. Do you know of a way to work around this? Justinrleung (talk) 04:24, 26 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
They are not bad redirects, they are redirects, and information your seek is not hidden away and a simple search will point you to Help:File redirect. That you wish to qualify them as bad for your purposes, doesn't make other purposes incorrect. The issue itself is not with the redirect, it lies with the template coding.

That some administrators speedy delete redirects of long-existing files following a move, such as these, contrary to the deletion policy guidance is unfortunate, and not one that I countenance. What you propose means anyone linking to a file externally would get a broken file link, and no image, and they would consider that bad.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:11, 26 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Justinrleung, I agree with billinghurst that as far as commons is concerned the redirects are valid and needed. However I also agree that not being able to detect redirects is an issue and I tried several ways. I created phabricator:T193162 documenting this issue. Please comment there, and maybe we will get this resolved. --Jarekt (talk) 13:06, 26 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Billinghurst: Thanks for pointing me to the documentation. That the templates were coded badly is an unfortunate consequence of how the ACC project started and how the templates were first created years ago. It relies heavily on the naming convention. That's why a simple fix is to use redirects so that we don't display incorrect files after moving to the corrected name. If this can't be fixed (or doesn't get fixed in a long time), then I'll consider trying to use Wikidata, but I'm hoping that's going to be the last resort. @Jarekt: Thanks for starting the Phabricator thread. If this gets fixed, then all is good for both Commons and Wiktionaries using ACC templates. Justinrleung (talk) 13:56, 26 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Rename

[edit]

Hi, Inregards to your rename request do you know "twhk" stands for ?, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 02:55, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Davey2010: I think it stands for Taiwan (tw) and Hong Kong (hk). This file should be part of Commons:Stroke Order Project, so the name according to the project's conventions should be 情-tbw.png Justinrleung (talk) 03:47, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Justinrleung, Thanks for that, When renaming files I have to decide essentially which is more descriptive hence why I wanted to know, I've gone ahead and renamed it :), Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 03:52, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Hello,

Can you please provide the Chinese text on the left side of the image File:Wan Hu large.png along with its translation? I'd love to have that added to its description, since it'll improve the experience for blind or visually impaired users.

Thank you so very much. Shāntián Tàiláng (talk) 18:23, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Also, can you please add that "spinster" sense and the relevant zh-syn-saurus template to 老大姐? I would greatly appreciate that. Thanks for your time. Shāntián Tàiláng (talk) 21:02, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

January 2023 WT edit request

Here's another list of favors I'd like you to do for me:
Glyph origin
needs to be added to , while
Glyph origin
needs to be added to .

In addition, needs Rain,
needs Landforms,
鰟鮍 needs Cyprinids,
窯姐 needs Female people,
and both 汝窯 and need Combustion.

And Module:zh/data/dial-syn/鱅魚 really needs the redlink 鰟頭 added to it (along with 鰟頭 being created using Cyprinids, of course).

Lastly, I want you (or maybe Eirikr?) to update to use the proper ja-readings format. (That is, change to .)

Also, can you please translate this phrase for me?:
"2012年成功嶺營區開放活動,開場青年高中大鼓隊的演出。"
It is from File:Youth High School Drums Beating Team in Chengkungling 20121006a.jpg. Thanks for your time. Shāntián Tàiláng (talk) 15:01, 10 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please stop requesting edits of me. Justinrleung (talk) 01:56, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My apologies. I just chose you because I'd been requesting Eirikr to make Japanese edits (and he was perfectly OK with that), and you're the only editor I can think of right now who knows enough Chinese to edit its entries.
Do you know any other such editors who have Commons talkpages, and whom I could potentially ask about the text shown in File:Wan Hu large.png among other things? Shāntián Tàiláng (talk) 16:37, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, sorry. I'd completely forgotten about Tooironic, who gladly made wikt:石墩 for me. Shāntián Tàiláng (talk) 16:39, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and by the way, am I ever allowed to ask you to un-revoke my Wiktionary talkpage access? Because I really won't (and I don't want to) request any edits of you anymore on Wiktionary if you do so. (I'll leave edit requests up to Tooironic or Eirikr, since they don't seem to mind me doing so.) Shāntián Tàiláng (talk) 14:41, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
