Hello, Justin Ormont!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Parent/child categories

[edit]

Hi Justin,

Thanks for creating the category for the Madison Women's March. Just a quick note about categorizing. First, categorizing is extremely helpful, so thank you. :) Second, in most cases we want to make sure something is not in a parent and a child category if all members of the child category are in the parent. So for example, Category:Madison Women's March was in Category:Demonstrations and protests and Category:Demonstrations and protests against the presidency of Donald Trump, but all of the demonstrations and protests against Trump are automatically in "demonstrations and protests". Though it seems like it makes images easier to find when in all of the categories, with millions of pictures it makes the higher-level categories unusable should there be a case where we need it (for example, demonstrations and protests in a country or for a cause that we do not yet have a subcategory for -- we'd want those to be the only files in just "demonstrations and protests"). Another example that's less obvious would be Category:Demonstrations and protests against the Donald Trump 2017 presidential inauguration and Category:2017 Women's March. Since the latter category is under the former, all images therein can be said to already be part of the inauguration category. And so on. Please let me know if you have questions. Certainly better to overcategorize than to undercategorize, as it's easier for other people to spot the redundant one than for them to determine the appropriate ones to begin with. — Rhododendrites talk16:13, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
