Unclear copyright status of File:Jess Wade - 2017.jpg

As you may or may not have been aware of at the time (or indeed now), merely being the subject of a photograph does not mean you hold the copyright to the image. As far as anyone can tell (and perhaps you can clear this up) this photograph was probably commissioned as a work for hire by professional photographer David Guttridge for Imperial College, your then and current employer. This means that unless explicitly stated, by law, copyright automatically rests with one or both parties. However, as has been documented here and the WMF blog, this picture was later passed to the WMF by you, under a Creative Commons license. This was so it could be published in the blog, and once it was, it was then uploaded uploaded to Commons by a third party (who, it should be noted, initially made the mistake of assuming you were the author and thus legal rights holder). Since the primary purpose of these license is to remove commercial rights in a photograph from authors or commissioners (i.e. monetary value or restrictions over use), this is not (usually) how a professional photographer or a body paying for photography would release their images. This is not to say that David and/or Imperial did not give you explicit permission to release this image on a CC license so as to illustrate your Wikipedia biography, but this is sadly not the way most images of this nature find their way onto Wikipedia. Far more common is a mistake, such as a subject wrongly assuming that because they are the person photographed, they own the copyright (or by extension, others mistakenly assume they are the author). For those reasons, Wikimedia Commons operates under the precautionary principle, whereby unless explicit proof is present to show the proper releases were obtained, an image must be deleted. As such, I guess I am asking if such permissions exist. And if they do not, can you obtain them after the event? If they do, you would need to email them to Commons, to ensure this image can be retained legally. Obviously, as you may be aware, the reason for this message is because the choice of image on your Wikipedia biography has come up again, and as far as I can tell, this is the only one of three potetial images you find acceptable.
