Merchant's Cresent image

Hi Jeremy, I have seen the image you have uploaded from the Geograph Project. I have seen the same image on PennineWay's website and would like to make sure that the correct copyright was used to upload the image, seehere, you will also notice the straddle house. Hmm... I went throught that user's other photos on the geograph project, and it seems that he has uploaded a few that come from other websites. It is still possible, of course, that he maintains those websites, but to be safe I will put the image up for deletion. In the mean time, if you can get a replacement that would be good. Categories/Articles

While it is true that categories and articles are not mutually exclusive, it is true that articles are preferable to categories, at least at the end nodes. For example, I wouldn't recommend creating a "Cities in Illinois" article in place of the "Cities in Illinois" category. What would go in it? On the other hand, city articles provide a superior format for organizing and presenting media. Rklawton 03:29, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

I know this is Jeremey's talk page, but I do tend to work with Jeremy on other projects and so I've noticed your question, I hope you don't mind Jeremy. The Commons are here to host media, not articles like the encyclopedae do. Since media has to be sorted so it can be found and used on encylopedic articles, it is found in categories. It is easier and quicker to maintain a sorting tree organised around categories arther than articles. The end node will simply be the media in turn sorted in categories. Since i actively participate on three encyclopedae i use much media from the Commons and add the Commonscat tag rather than the commons one as categories contain more media and don't need updating them selves. Nice one, it looks good. One suggestion and one question: From the numbering of the buildings it looks like you are going to add a key--maybe the platform numbers (which I realise you have made smaller) could be in a different font to really distinguish them. Also, Isn't Sheaf House gone/going? I had thought about doing a tramway map, but when I looked at it I found it pretty daunting, which is why I decided to try the railways instead. The tramway map looks great! I've uploaded versions of the railway map for c.1855 and c.2005; c1930 is coming along, but is the most complex of the lot (the 1921 OS map of Sheffield city centre is almost 1/3rd railway—BTW. you know anything about the Nunnery Colliery Railway? I do. I hope you include all the goods stations that used to be in the centre near all the markets. Pity you can't go to Waterstone's as the Godfrey Maps are a wealth of information. I used to have my great uncle's brother or something that worked at that colliery... I have been to Crich so have photos of the you-know-whats from you-know-where as well as plans for all tramway systems in the area: Rotherham, Barnsley, Mexbro, Doncaster: they'll have their own article and plan. If you want to help, you'll be most welcome, that can be an expansion from the Sheffield Project. You'll find that trams were connected from Sheffield to Mexbro so it is not entirely off-topic.

I know my plans don't look as good as some others made with expensive imaging suites but it's all about the information, and it's there. I have changed the referencing on the Midland Station plan and added a key. It is clearer indeed, cheers. I have noticed your upload but I am confused at what is Grange Station. Is is at the LC in Ecclesfield ? From what i know, Meadoahall Station (on SYR/GCR) is on Grange Mill Lane. I'm wondering if they're not the same station. I was hoping that you might be able to tell me something about it! Grange Lane station is marked on the 1855 OS map here. I had thought that Meadowhall station was to the south of this, but maybe I am wrong. Strangely this timetable from 1854 doesn't mention Grange Lane, however the diagram linked from this page shows (very faintly) platforms at Grange Lane. Other than that I have not been able to find much else out about this station.

The 1930 map will have sheds and goods stations on it. I have included Neepsend shed and Bridgehouses goods on the 1855 version, but it doesn't seem that there were many more in existence at that time. I have a big pile of Godfrey maps that I am working from--I'm maybe being a bit too anal about getting everything in the correct position, which is slowing me down a little.

I was half hoping that you might go to Crich to get some photos. When you started the tramway article I was frustrated because I think that I have some photos of Crich, but if I do they are locked up in Edinburgh (I have a storage unit there). JeremyA 21:44, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

Well the diagram shows Grange Lane as a LC box, like I thought, and on the road that I thought. I went there on the 22^nd after work, there's even track crossing the road. I think that form the maps you've shown me that the station was short lived, whilst the station at Meadowhall opened. My South Yorkshire Railway on old picture postcars does not mention Grange Lane... Grrr, annoying ! I had never been to Crich, and my great uncle randomly came up with the idea, so I went! I'll get photos uploaded when I have time. Meanwhile, I've created a template for tramways in South Yorkshire and Humberside, and started the Grimsby District Light Railway article. I'm gutted as there is a Grimsby Electric LR tramcar (the american looking ones) at Crich which I did not know, and missed. I've been told by Mrs Captain Scarlet that we are going back to Crich, so I'm not arguying or complaining! I might need your moderation skills on EN, but these can wait at least till tonight (GMT). Hi, you gave to that image CC-BY-SA-licence, but at the same time you write "© Jeremy Atherton 2006." AFAIK © means you are holding copyright for the picture which is a contradiction to CC-BY-SA-licence. You cannot leave it like that. Please, change the description to "Photo taken by Jeremy Atherton 2006", "Photographer: Jeremy Atherton 2006" or something like that. Shaqspeare 07:24, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Jeremy is free to have copyright of the image so long as the license is CC-BY-SA. Jeremy retains copyright, by licenses the image for use indicated by the license. Hope that helps. Captain Scarlet 14:36, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

problem users

Hey Jeremy, don't be afraid to take a harder line with newbies who won't listen, and those who don't take the time to understand even the basic requirements. (ala User talk:UNFORGIVEN) If one "no source" notice gets ignored then 10 hundred will be ignored just the same. Some of the images you tagged no source were uploaded yesterday by the same user, and speedied as copyvios. I'm not sure if you got the "1 deleted edit" link or not but in cases like this I would strongly bend towards speedying again. eg. Image:LitaSault.jpg (ah, the link is in the "history" tab)... by viewing the deleted edit you can see that the user hasn't provided any new information.

It simply takes too much work and these stupid images hang around for far too long if we are overcautious. I wish we had an upload-only ban but so far, no luck. Short bans tend to have a greater impact than talk page warnings.

A new tool to help with deletions: FYI

it's called "Bad Old Ones". See e.g. [4]. I created a template, {{Delete assist}} which should be put on subcats of 'Unknown'. I just put it on the month-level ones, if you want to put it on day-level ones you're welcome to. It will just automatically create the link to Bad Old Ones for that category.

It's good if you want to delete "easy" cases that aren't being used anywhere. :) There's also a 'safe delete' option which creates a backup copy on the toolserver. However Brion is working on undeletion of images at the moment and it might be fixed permanently very soon!

Some probable copyrighted images

Although I am a Wikipedia user, my knowledge about Commons is very limited. Thus, instead of trying to be bold and executing the steps, I prefer relying in someone who seemly knows about all this. With some time, I may consider learning about this namespace, but for now, I prefer staying away.

It is my belief that FatFox (talk · contribs) has been uploading copyrighted images to Commons. I crossed his path at w:PlayStation Portable, and after some study I arrived to my previous conclusion. Wikipedia user 71.114.63.186 tried to link an image found in internet directly in the Sega Mega-CD/Sega_CD article. [5] This image was uploaded by FatFox at Commons, [6] when you tagged it [7] (from where I picked your talk page). The user tried to mark it as promotional, [8] but reverted to GFDL when he noticed the speedy tag. md5sum for the uploaded and the one found in internet is the same.

The user also uploaded Image:JapPSP.jpg From the Japans and Europes stores., which he marked for deletion later, [9] and is quite similar to others found in internet like this one.

He also uploaded Image:Sony PSP.jpg, which although I couldn't find anywhere, is quite similar to a promotional image found in internet, [10] which leads me to believe it is also copyrighted.

I marked the SegaCD as imagevio at Wikipedia, but guessed informing here would be the best option. Thanks for your time. -- ReyBrujo 04:17, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

I followed User:Charhally over here from Wikipedia, where he was spamming Wake Forest sub-sub-sub topics, and noticed that you had blocked him for repeat uploads of unsourced images. He responded to this by retagging them all GPL; in addition to being incorrectly licensed, they are still all unsourced. I've gotten through tagging a few of them so far... Just curious, what made you delete this so fast? As far as I could make out there only was a referral to Spanish copyright law, and users that wanted to make use (commercial or not) of it should contact ... which was why I put it up for deletion anyway, because I wanted to grant the uploader just some more time. If you don't mind I'll restore it and continue the deletion request, I had some serious doubts but just wanted to be sure. The first sentence: Para las empresas, corporaciones o instituciones de cualquier tipo, públicas o privadas, con o sin ánimo de lucro y para los particulares con fines comerciales o lucrativos la disponibilidad está sujeta a lo estipulado por la Ley de Propiedad Intelectual (Real Decreto Legislativo 1/1996, de 12 de Abril), in my mind translates to for enterprises, coroporations or institutions of any type, public or private, with or without commercial goals and for private persons with commercial goals the availability of the images is subject to the Law of Intellectual Property etc. because I'm not exactly sure of what it references to, especially for eventual future uploads, I'll contact a Spanish admin to be absolutely sure, that's ok? Hi! Thanks for uploading this image. However, the Wikimedia Commons is a repository only for images that can be used freely for any purpose, and I think that this is not the case with this photograph. The sculpture depicted is likely still protected by copyright as the artist died less than 70 years ago, as such the photograph is a derivative work that would require aithorisation from the copyright holder (presumably the estate of Chaim Gross) before it could be published. I noticed that you have used the photo in an article on the English wikipedia, and I think that this photo would be an ideal candadate for a 'fair use' illustration in that article—I suggest that you reupoad the photo directly to the English Wikipedia and use one of the fair use tags, such as Statue. I had wrongly assumed that things (art, buildings, etc) in public places were acceptable unless marked otherwise, so I have learned something. For my own part, I stick to GFDL and Public Domain, so I think I will not upload it to the English wikipedia as fair use. Of course please feel free to delete this photo from the Commons. Image review petition

Hi there. Back here, it seems. I noticed someone added Image:Tarja turunen.jpg to the Nightwish article in the english Wikipedia, and after further checking it, I noticed it was uploaded in Commons with the {{Cc-by-sa-2.0}} tag although the image itself is not free for commercial purposes (licended apparently under Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0). Could you please review it? I believe this could be tagged with a speedy tag, but just like last time, I am not familiar with the process here, nor I want to be taken as a vandal for tagging speedy a (perhaps) valid image.
