Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 06:04, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

File tagging File:Dwain_Lingenfelter.jpg
This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Dwain_Lingenfelter.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Dwain_Lingenfelter.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Tell City Oddfellows' Lodge
Thanks very much for repairing the corruption; I never figured out what happened with it. Nyttend (talk) 12:00, 28 July 2011 (UTC)
- Interestingly, it wasn't simply a corrupted image. The top and bottom halves were different, as if they were two images snapped at the same time with slightly different exposure settings. At any rate, I'm glad we got it sorted out without too much trouble. Jbarta (talk) 13:14, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Timestamp removal
Out of interest, how do you remove timestamps? Eg this to this. Ultra7 (talk) 13:56, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
- Mostly using a "clone tool". It's an editing tool available in most graphic editing applications. Basically it copies a bit of an image from one area and pastes it to another. Very handy little tool ;-) Jbarta (talk) 16:26, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
- Cool. It looks very good at approximating, judging by the legal lettering at the bottom of the bus. Ultra7 (talk) 20:30, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
- Yes and no. The legal lettering was touched up using the clone tool, but maybe not how you're thinking. Once the timestamp was eliminated, the missing parts of the legal lettering had to be filled in and reconstructed by cloning bits of other lettering. Also keep in mind that such an effort does not have to be perfect. It just has to look ok on casual viewing. If you look carefully at most watermark removals, you can see what I mean. A very enlightening way to view editing differences is to open both images and paste one directly on top of another as a separate layer. Then switch back and forth between the layers and the telltale edits will pop out at you. Jbarta (talk) 21:20, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

watermark removal
Hallo Jbarta, thanks for your work at File:Karin_Axelsson-Sonic_Syndicate-wrtn-2010.jpg#filehistory. However, one suggestion: please choose the highest jpeg quality your editing program can do if you do image edits. As the file got smaller here I suspect that you did not do so. That would help to preserve the best possible quality of our iamges. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 02:50, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- The app I used is set to the lowest compression setting available. I've noticed that between apps, the effective minimum compression can vary somewhat. In this instance I think we'll be fine. Thanks for the tip though ;-) Jbarta (talk) 03:38, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- Okay, fine that you are aware! :-) Even inside programs the compression can vary greatly. For example in GIMP: even if you set to quality 100 it still does color compression (subsampling) (that setting which is hidden per default). Recently I changed the standard setting in my GIMP therefore so I do not miss that. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 14:31, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
Really should use a different file name
When cropping something like File:Nellie Cornish c. 1922.jpg, you should use a different filename and leave the original intact. This is a portrait from a 1922 document. Someone might well want the most accurate available representation of what was in that 1922 document, and the cropped version is not that. - Jmabel ! talk 01:19, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
- It can go either way. To make a separate file for all such edits would leave images scattered all over. Further, I would argue that for our purposes, this image is a representation of the person, not a representation of the image as we found it. Even further, many older photos have extra around them that I'm sure the photographer figured would be trimmed to finished size. Here and here are perfect examples. And finally, the originals are still available in the history if anyone wants them or if it's felt the edit is truly inappropriate. Is that reasonable? – JBarta (talk) 01:45, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
Good work
Good work at File:Batasia Loop of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.jpg, especially the second one :) Too bad the contributor is not willing to remove those watermarks himself so we need to spend all this work ourselves. Copyright status: File:Neoplan N4016td Kielce.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Neoplan N4016td Kielce.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Hi Jbarta
I see that you have downloaded a new version of my picture : Provins - Eglise Saint-Ayoul - IMG 1180.jpg
The size and dimension of my initial picture was : 2 592 × 3 888 (1,98 Mio)
The size and dimension of your picture modified is now 2 389 × 3 810 (4,56 Mio). Reduction of the dimension but significant increase of the size ! How can you explain that ?
Since the quality of the picture has been changed, I proceed to a revert of your modification. Then I will download a new version of the picture with your suggested dimension.
Best Regards. --Poudou99 (talk) 20:11, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
- Makes no sense to leave the image crooked as it was and nothing you wrote above makes much sense. Best just leave the image as I modified it and all will be well... I promise ;-) – JBarta (talk) 20:17, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
- I understand your point of view but the size of your new image is still incorrect : 4,56 Mio (increase of the initial size). Please check that. Which software do you use for this modification. --Poudou99 (talk) 20:33, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
- May be I am not clear. My concern is only about the size of the picture, not the object of your modification (I agree that).
- Normally, if you reduce the dimension : from 2592×3888 to 2389×3810 you should have a reduction of the size : something less than 1.98 Mio. It is not the case with your modification: new size : 4.56 Mio. That means we have a modification of the quality of the image. --Poudou99 (talk) 20:42, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
- The size is not "incorrect". The size (in Mb) is a reflection of the quality settings the image was saved at. I simply save JPGs at a higher quality (lower compression) than you. For our purposes here, saving at low compression is a good thing. For more information read about JPG compression. After you do that, if you still have questions, I'll be happy to try and answer them. – JBarta (talk) 20:44, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
- I always thought that if you increase the size of a picture (whatever the compression is), you add bits/pixels in the file. These new pixels are not the original pixels (as captured by the camera), they have been generated by the algorithm. In other words, if you reduce the compression (from a compressed picture), you add pixels, where they come from ? Where I am wrong ? --Poudou99 (talk) 21:01, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
- In fact, this is not really important. Let's continue to add pictures in Commons ;-). It is more interesting, isn't it ? Regards, --Poudou99 (talk) 21:10, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
- In a way you are correct, once an image has been saved at higher compression, detail is (or may be) lost. Re-saving at a lower compression does not bring that detail back and the jpg algorithm does use more bytes to save the file (even though it is lower quality). Is anything gained by saving a lower quality image at a lower jpg compression? In this instance, since the image was rotated and new gradients created, yes. In many cases however, no. Is there any harm to saving a lower quality image at a lower jpg compression? No. The only possible drawback is the bandwidth used to download the extra megabytes. When I edit images on Commons, I save everything at low jpg compression. That assures that (near) maximum possible quality is always retained. – JBarta (talk) 21:29, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

removing watermarks
Please, don't remove my watermarks. This is protection from hackers, who want to stole my pictures without my agreement.
Szczecinolog (talk) 20:06, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
- I understand your concern, but Commons policy discourages watermarks. By uploading images with watermarks, you create extra work for other editors who must remove them. Besides, don't you think if a hacker want to stole your images they would just remove the watermark themselves? Place attribution/credit information on the image description page or EXIF metadata... not in the images themselves. – JBarta (talk) 20:15, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

- I understand. However, you should still add the correct information to the image description pages. Who is the author? Did you scan it? If so, you can write "scanned from old print" for source. You are not the author and it is not your own work. You can add the information in German if you wish. Also, you are not the copyright owner. It is public domain, so you should also change the license tag. – JBarta (talk) 00:04, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

Perspective control and cropping
Hi Jbarta. Thank you for correcting the perspective and cropping my photograph (my intermediate upload was due to an edit conflict). If you have time, it would be great if you could do the same for these three photographs of paintings by Alexandre Calame. --Leyo 18:46, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you for having done two of them. May I ask which software you are using? --Leyo 10:53, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
- All three are done now. My apologies for not getting to the third sooner. I have procrastination issues which I will need to do something about one of these days ;-) And I used GIMP for the straightening & cropping. – JBarta (talk) 10:41, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for telling me I am going to try my best to fix this
Yeah Jbarta I just wanted to let you know I am going to fix that problem right up. I just happened to put that picture up, for the main reason being that Frank Llaneza happened to be my grandfather, and I wanted to honor him by placing a picture on his wikipedia page. I simply just uploaded the picture that my grandmother gave to me I had no idea their was a problem with copyright issues.

PD-ineligible
Hello Jbarta,
I have published a lot of self-made French departement route signs in the last weeks. I made them myself using the svg-program Inkscape and therefore those images are under my copyright. I published them using the normal license cc-by-sa-3.0, but you changed it to PD-ineligible. Like on the page File:Route départementale française 607.svg. What is the reason of this? Croonstad (talk) 23:01, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- Copyfraud. --Leyo 01:24, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
- Well, in this instance it's more like copy-misunderstanding. A copyright cannot be claimed on just anything. Your sign images are simply letters and numbers. This is not considered an original and creative work subject to copyright protection. See Category:PD ineligible for typical examples. (It should be noted that there are probably images in that category that shouldn't be there, but you'll get the general idea.) I didn't tag all your road sign images, just some of them. I was hoping that in the interest of accuracy, you might re-tag the rest of them yourself. – JBarta (talk) 03:10, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
- I published them in the Netherlands and under Dutch Law (Auteurswet 1912, article 10.1) I'm allowed to claim copyright on all types of paintings, designs and sketches. So I won't change the license at all signs. I just made them for the Dutch wikipedia. Anybody else may use it, but I'm still the 'author' of this work. Croonstad (talk) 10:26, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
- You're greatly misunderstanding copyright law. You cannot copyright a number... or a letter... in ANY country. For the sake of argument, let's suppose you could. Let's suppose you make a yellow square with the number 10 on it. Then legally, you could demand compensation if someone else makes a yellow square with the number 10 on it and tries to use it. And how do you know someone else hasn't already "copyrighted" a yellow square with the number 10 on it? You think you would be the first person to copyright the number 10? Anyhow, a copyright is a legally enforcable right granted to the author of original creative works. A yellow square with a few letters and numbers on it is neither original or creative. A copyright isn't something you can slap on any old thing just because you drew it. The work has to be copyrightable... and no matter what you wish, no matter what you think, a few letters and numbers on a yellow rectangle is simply, utterly and totally NOT copyrightable. Period. – JBarta (talk) 10:58, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
- I'm not claiming copyright on the square + number, but I'm claiming copyright on the image I made. Anybody can make an image which a yellow square and the text D607, but it will never be exactly the same. Croonstad (talk) 11:10, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

- It's not a really big deal and I just made those images for pages like this. But I can't store images on the Dutch wikipedia, so you have to put them on Commons, with all types of copyright policies. I'm interested in roads, not in law. Croonstad (talk) 11:14, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
- Make the images and list yourself as the author. That's fine and you get all the credit in the world. But for the sake of accuracy, consider using the PD tag for such images. – JBarta (talk) 11:17, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

CC-BY 3.0 = PD?
(Forgive the orthography and grammar, Google Translator)
User Jbarta:
I noticed you changed the license of my files, from CC-BY 3.0 to PD. Sorry, but you're committing a violation of the 27th article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and a violation of the Federal Law of Copyright in Mexico (my country), which is the 28th article of the Constitution of the United Mexican States. The files:
are part of the package Íconos del Mago (“Icons of the Magus”), which is under the license CreativeCommons-Attribution 3.0 (legal text here).
The PD-shape template is for single images, without details. It even includes a sample from a heptagon no shadows or colors. My icon would be a candidate for this license if it were like this picture, but it is not. My icon include fill, shadows, brightness and borders —further metadata— representative of the Íconos del Mago.
The complete set of Íconos del Mago you can check here, in flickr.
I will reverse your changes to my files and return the license originally assigned by me, Arturo D. Castillo, representative and project manager of Industrias Helix ©. Remember to respect the laws and international agreements. I like the public domain, but also I want an attribution to my work when I think needed —for that reason they were created the Creative Commons—.
Good day, Jbarta.
End of statement — Zóram Hákān Talk 18:44, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- You can, of course, credit yourself as the author on the image description page. However "copyright" is a legal protection granted to works that meet a certain level of creativity and originality. Those slightly stylized individual water droplets certainly do not rise to that level. If they did, then all these various droplet images are also copyrighted and your image probably violates someone else's copyright. Absurd if you think about it. This is why images must meet a threshold of originality to be copyrightable. At any rate, your droplet images (along with most of the others in that image search) are public domain and would lose in a copyright suit regardless of what copyright tag you (or anyone else) wishes to place on them. Again, by all means, list yourself as the author, but in the interests of accuracy, I would ask that you use the proper PD tags. – JBarta (talk) 19:14, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- I would also suggest that most, if not ALL of those images you mention on flickr individually fail to pass the threshold of originality to qualify for legal copyright protection. Many people have a gross misunderstanding of copyright and are very eager to slap a copyright tag on just about anything... but that doesn't mean that the copyright is valid, accurate or enforcable. – JBarta (talk) 20:45, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- Discussion moved to File talk:Gota01.svg.

What did you do to the Steve King photo to make it look clearer? Also, could you do that without cropping it? I'm going to be using it in a gallery and it's best if all of the photos are the same size. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 04:22, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

- Thanks - and thanks for making a cropped version for the 80th GA gallery - I re-uploaded that one as File:Steve A. King - Official Portrait - 79th GA cropped.jpg (crediting you, of course). I'm still curious as to how you made the photo look clearer - It'll be a little bit before I upload the other images for the 79th GA gallery, but it'd be great to be able to lighten the others as they need it. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 23:48, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Nice crop, but please hold fire on pic edits until after the Flickr reviewer bot has verified the license first, if it doesn't find the original it creates extra work for an admin reviewer ;-) Thanks! MPF (talk) 01:24, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

Why proposing to deletion "own work" ?
Hi,
You proposed for deletion a list of items there:Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_of_User:Ysa-Gudule
If the disk covers are likely copyringhted, I just wonder why you added their own photography too with no real justification "The few remaining are probably also copyrighted and/or lifted from somewhere ". What is this "probably" ? Can you show us from where?
I just had a look at the pictures exif, see File:François_Pierron.jpg, the exif says "Copyright holder YSABELLE MATHIEU alias GUDULE", and the exposure/ISO/time are compatible with a live picture (but not with a picture of a picture).
Moreover, a simple google search with that name links to the website of a photograph: http://www.lezard-de-gudule.com/
I really dont understand.

- If you feel some of the images should not be deleted, feel free to add your comments to the deletion nomination page. You make a good point and it's very possble that a few of those images should not be in that list. – JBarta (talk) 17:28, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
- And one more thing... regarding the proposed deletion of "own work". Some (many) uploaders have a very broad interpretation of the phrase "own work" and have expanded it to include anything they might wish to upload... "I copied it and uploaded it to Commons, therefore it is my own work". Given that generality, and given specifically an uploader who has claimed may copyrighted files as "own work", any other files that he claims as his "own work" are also under suspicion. – JBarta (talk) 17:36, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
Copyright status: File:Robert shea.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Robert shea.jpg.
Thank you. |

With a lot of patience:-). Simply, I correct the gradient (copied on a different layer, in Photoshop) a piece a time, and then correct the border, if necessary.

Saludos, Politicon --Fellismo Histórico Unido (talk) 19:05, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

Some help here?
Hi, Jbarta! I wanted to add this picture to this article. The problem is that the colors aren't correct. They should be more alike this smaller version of the picture, which isn't that great since his skin color looks a little yellowish (he was white). So I remembered that you once did a great job turning this into this. I wonder if you could do it again? --Lecen (talk) 21:42, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Jbarta, it's really a pity the low quality of the image. As you can see in the source file, it comes from here. It could be possible to get partial screenshots, but I'd be unable to join them all. Would it be possible to do it provided that I send you the partial screenshots? Many thanks anyway --Ecemaml talk to me/habla conmigo 07:28, 6 March 2013 (UTC)
- I saw that source and it's not very high resolution to start with. I think our copy was cropped from that, then blown up by a factor of three or so. Blowing it up doesn't increase the resolution, it just makes the image bigger. In other words, it doesn't do a whole lot. The source file from mcu.es is not very high resolution, but seems to be the highest available. I guess I was just engaging in wishful thinking in that maybe somewhere there actually is a very high resolution tif copy of that image lying around somewhere. – JBarta (talk) 12:34, 6 March 2013 (UTC)
With all due respect, your edit does not make much sense. Yes, it's arguably a watermark. However, given its size and location, the mark will undoubtedly be dealt with by cropping it out. By insisting on using what you subjectively believe to be the "correct" tag (very debatable, by the way), the image is now in an endless and growing queue of 52,000+ files with the watermark tag, and experience shows that it is unlikely to ever be revised to have the watermark removed. Moreover, given the fairly straightforward nature of the necessary revision, it is tremendously unhelpful to be clogging up the watermark backlog with simple crop requests. However, if we use the crop tag, there is a much smaller backlog, and a larger team of contributors who are capable of dealing with crops, and the image is actually likely to get the attention it needs. By insisting that we use the watermark tag for simple crops, on the debatable grounds that it is the "correct" tag, you're simply ensuring that the images in question are far less likely to get fixed, and also making it more likely that images that really need the watermark tag get lost in the growing backlog. Sorry if I come across as combative, but I get frustrated when form trumps substance. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 16:25, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
- I understand your reasoning, but a watermark is a watermark and should be tagged watermark... period. If you're in a hurry to get a watermark removed, post it to the Graphics Lab here or here instead of tagging it incorrectly. That said, I removed the watermark so at least as far as this image is concerned it's no longer an issue. – JBarta (talk) 16:41, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
- I would also comment that the image was not used in any articles... so watermark or not, it really doesn't matter. In addressing the backlog of watermarks, one of the methods of prioritization is that the watermarked images that are generally addressed first are the ones that appear in the most articles or get the most views. I would ALSO comment that a while back I attempted to address this whole watermarking business at the upload point by strengthening and clarifying the wording of guidelines, etc... but other editors seemed more interested in doing nothing rather than fixing the problem. So I have little sympathy for the huge backlog of watermarks because we have not done all we could to prevent it. – JBarta (talk) 17:08, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
First, "a watermark is a watermark and should be tagged watermark... period." isn't a rule, it isn't supported anywhere by policy or guidelines, and you adding "period" to the end of your claim does not make it any more true. I've explained in some detail why your edit was a problem, and your personal opinion that "a watermark is a watermark" does not address any of the issues I raised.
Second, your statement "the image was not used in any articles... so watermark or not, it really doesn't matter" is problematic on so many levels. The Commons does not exist solely to serve Wikipedia - it is a stand-alone repository used by countless types of users. This notion that we don't need to solve problems because an image isn't used on Wikipedia is inconsistent with the whole rationale for this project. And it also ignores the fact that uncropped images such as this one are less likely to be used by a Wikipedia project until they are fixed. This is not a good rationale for your edit.
Third, your statement "little sympathy for the huge backlog of watermarks because we have not done all we could to prevent it" is equally troubling. The fact that you are unconcerned with the backlog because nobody agreed with you in some past discussion is a really inappropriate reason for you to make an edit like this one.
Fourth, pointing to the Graphics Lab is not an excuse to toss something into an endless backlog. There is a difference between never getting something done, having it done in a reasonable amount of time, and needing it done as a rush. Just because this wasn't a case for the last category does not automatically means it should stew in the first category.
While I thank you for removing the watermark, please remember that it's your own personal opinion as to which tag is correct, and in this case had I not complained about your initial edit, this image would have been stuck in purgatory. That's not a good solution, and your rationale for it is unhelpful. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 18:25, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
- I'll respond to your third statement. It's not that "nobody agreed with (me)"... most agreed with me. The problem was that editors were more interested in arguing and debating and prattling on over minor issues than actually getting it done. So nothing got done and I walked away in disgust. Rather than making argument with me over this image and this issue, perhaps you can actually DO something to reduce the problem. Maybe you'll have better luck than I. – JBarta (talk) 20:04, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I still don't think it's a valid reason for switching a tag, but I sympathise and I agree with you that it is an important issue - and I have more insight into your frustration. Can you provide a link to the discussion? I'd like to look at that. In the meantime, thank you again for removing the watermark, which at the end of the day is all that matters. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 21:52, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
- I don't remember where or when and I really don't feel like trying to find it. The jist of the problem is that some uploaders feel entitled to include a watermark on their images because it's not made perfectly clear on upload that not only are watermarks an improper method of attribution, but they will be removed. Some uploaders feel watermarks are optional (I think the term Commons uses is that they are "discouraged"), or that they can wish for any sort of attribution they want... and they want a watermark. Commons needs an unambiguous policy of no watermarks that is made clear from the moment of upload and is consistent through the guidelines. This message should be aimed at those who deliberately upload watermarked images while not scaring away things like flickr transfers that already contain watermarks. Good luck. – JBarta (talk)
- Perfect example of the problem. This dear sweet uploader has just created hours of work for other Wikipedia editors while almost certainly thinking he has done nothing wrong... because of OUR inability to be clear on the issue of watermarks. - I actually do seem to recall a fairly recent discussion at the VP or somewhere about watermarks, and I do remember it getting stuck in the quagmire of unnecessary details. It is unfair to uploaders, because we are effectively misleading them. I agree with you. Let me give this some thought. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 17:06, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
- Update: It seems the uploader in question has indeed uploaded watermarked images deliberately as advertising for his website... and intends to upload even more. Keep in mind I'm not in support of any punitive actions against this uploader. Many of his images are potentially useful and why single him out? I am in support of making Common's watermark policy firmer and more consistent. Once that's done we can take action against uploaders who run afoul of our newly unambiguous guidelines. Until then we would just be punishing others for our own shortcomings. – JBarta (talk) 15:00, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

- I pointed all deletion discussions regarding this uploader's files to one common request. – JBarta (talk) 23:39, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
- That deletion discussion aside, isn't the first step trying to get Commons:Watermarks approved as policy? It's hard having these discussions about preventing uploads with watermarks without first having policy to back it up. Skeezix1000 (talk) 00:34, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- I'm surprised you would ask such a question as I though it was perfectly clear. At any rate, yes, you are correct. That said, there is another point of view floating around that was expressed here in response to an even bigger problem here at Commons (misuse and overuse of "own work"). The view basically suggests we should place as few obstacles as possible in front of uploaders and concentrate more on fixing bad uploads rather than preventing them. – JBarta (talk) 00:56, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

- Unfortunately, it's not obvious or clear. It doesn't seem to be anybody's priority at the moment. I think two or three of us working together could get it done. And I would ignore that obnxious comment about our collective laziness. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 13:47, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

I only just notice your question at the FX lab. I place it manually. There are some tools you could use, the image mapping tool I think it might be somewhere in preferences, but it is designed for something else. Penyulap ☏ 22:57, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

Unless there's some weird caching bug, File:Expo Pink Floyd - Organ.jpg still has a watermark. Please restore the template acoordingly. Andy Mabbett (talk) 21:31, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
- You are correct, there's a "weird caching bug". It's an intermittant but longstanding issue with the Wikimedia software where images don't update imediately. The watermark has been removed, everything is as it should be and the software will catch up eventually.
- Any image can be seen in its current version regardless of any thumbnail generation issues by appending ?action=purge to the filename...
- – JBarta (talk) 21:40, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you. I had purged, but still se the watermark. Andy Mabbett (talk) 13:33, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
- When the wiki software is acting up, you must purge the image file itself. Purging pages with the image on it (such as the image description page) doesn't normally work. – JBarta (talk) 13:37, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

Images with watermarks
Howdy. Some of the images you are adding to Category:Uploads by Microtoerisme with watermarks don't actually have watermarks. I removed them prior to you adding the category. I don't think it is a big number, but I just figured I'd let you know.--Rockfang (talk) 20:13, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
- I knew a few didn't have watermarks. I just didn't bother to go through and pick out those few. – JBarta (talk) 21:54, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
Hello! The flickr link has a higher resolution image (2663 x 2153) and we normally upload this highest resolution. I was gonna upload it now but noticed that you have taken some efforts in editing the image and removing the green light. Can you please upload the higher res image with your editing? §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 04:59, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- I normally do, but in this case I didn't upload it to Commons and I didn't check if it was the highest resolution available when I made further edits. If it's any consolation to you, the image is of reasonably high resolution as it is. – JBarta (talk) 05:16, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- Also, if it's not immediately apparent, Nagualdesign made a few edits himself before uploading it from Flickr. So even if I did check for a higher resolution, I probably still would have left it. In other words, it's all Nagualdesign's fault... that old dirty bastard.... – JBarta (talk) 05:19, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- I personally don't mind this resolution either. I was just worried if some bot comes and adds the higher res file. Template:Small Hence thought of informing you. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 05:36, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- If there is such a bot I would think it's smart enough to NOT upload over an edited file. – JBarta (talk) 05:41, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- You know what? He did upload the highest resolution... he just cropped it a little before uploading. What a swell guy ;-) – JBarta (talk) 05:56, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- Aahhh! That right! Anyways... we can always revert that bot if it does anything we don't like. Not to worry. Have a nice day! §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 06:17, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Quite honestly, I would hope you have more useful things to do than get fired up in such petty and childish bickering. I would also suggest that instead of looking to others to change their behavior (which they usually won't) you instead change your behavior (which you can). It seems to me you have plenty of room for change and improvement... which may actually help you in dealings with others, as opposed to endless petty bickering which will not. – JBarta (talk) 23:30, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi. I was wondering if you can fix some of this issues in this photo. Some of those issues are the reflection in the sunglasses, re-cropping and noise reduction among others. Do you think you can help? -- The Egyptian Liberal (talk) 13:37, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
- I reduced the reflections in his glasses and made a nice crop suitable for an infobox. Unfortunately, once noise gets into an image the only way to remove it is by blurring... which makes things worse IMO. So, I gave it a very slight blur which made me feel like I was at least trying to do something about it. Even with a little noise, it's a fine picture. Hope that helps. – JBarta (talk) 14:39, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
Please explain why you have collapsed this discussion without it being resolved. I want that IB and as I said I'm not going away until I get it, I'll start a new discussion if I have to. Fry1989 eh? 18:23, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
- I simply collapsed it so that the sections are easier to see and manage. You have to admit it was quite a long page. It has nothing to do with resolving anything or trying to make anyone go away (though it probably would be beneficial if a few people stopped posting so much). You can always add to any section if you feel the need. – JBarta (talk) 18:31, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

- I suppose people can be mistaken about a lot of things. Normally when a discussion is "closed" it says this discussion is closed. What you see there is a simple collapse template as is often used (sometimes even in articles) to collapse large sections of whatever to make the page more managable. Nothing sinister here, I promise. – JBarta (talk) 19:47, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Hey Jbarta,
This is Caponer--I use my real name on Wikimedia Commons as I've uploaded a lot of my own photography on here. I continue to edit under Caponer on Wikipedia. Thanks again for uploading the photos--I'm still working on categorizing and writing text for each, and of course, placing them in Wikipedia articles. Kudos on a job well done! -- Justin.A.Wilcox (talk) 20:15, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
- Ah, ok... – JBarta (talk) 22:24, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
Hi Jabarta,
you recommended me to "just do it". This and that is what is happening when I'm trying to "just" implement automatic archiving Template:Smiley.
I put work into it and set up automatic archiving in all COM:GL workshops, and Penyulap is rendering my work useless by prohibiting me to replace Template:Tl with Template:Tl which has essentially the same meaning but is recognized by User:SpBot whereas the former is not. That was exactly what I was afraid of – Penyulap blocking my work. *sigh* --Patrick87 (talk) 04:06, 14 July 2013 (UTC)
- It's good that you can/have set it up. Penyulap making mischief is a different problem that can be addressed later. That said, I personally would MUCH rather see a simple "resolved" tag as is used in the en Graphic Lab. It's simple, it works great and no one has an issue with it. Is there no way to set up archiving so that it will recognize "resolved" rather than "section resolved"? Recognizing both might even be best of all. – JBarta (talk) 18:16, 14 July 2013 (UTC)
- You have to negotiate that with de:Benutzer:Euku. User:SpBot is his bot and is the only bot available for archiving resolved requests which is available across Wikipedias and also the only bot for the job available on Commons currently. For consistency Euku proposed to use Template:Tlf instead of Template:Tlf as we do on German Wikipedia (see de:WP:GWS) and everywhere else SpBot is used and I'm basically with him. It works perfectly on German Wikipedia and I assume after the initial migration it will feel as natural as the Template:Tlf template does now in Commons GL. Additionally you might have noticed that the Template:Tlf/Template:Tlf thing is currently a specialty which is only used on English graphics lab.
- Anyway I'm afraid you're expressing your preferences a little late – exactly this was what I asked on Commons talk:GL were you recommended to "just implement it". So did I! --Patrick87 (talk) 00:05, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
- Fair enough, we will try to allow it to work in the Photography workshop. Glad you got it done. – JBarta (talk) 03:11, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
- Few questions:
- Does it also mark inactive sections "Stale" after a period of time? If yes, after how long?
- Does it then archive those stale sections? If yes, after how long?
- If I read it right, it archives "section resolved" sections after 30 days? If so, isn't that a bit long? I think 3 days is fine... up to 10 as a compromise... but 30?
- – JBarta (talk) 06:32, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
- Feel free to discuss this on the GL's talk page. As soon as there is consent Template:Smiley I'll be happy to change the time. Anyway, as currently resolved requests sit there forever unless someone archives them (and this was done approx. every three months at best), I think 30 days is already much of an improvement. --Patrick87 (talk) 09:20, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry, I don't know how I managed that but I somehow over-read that part about stale sections (e.g. the first two bullet points) and only answered the last one. To answer the first two bullet points: No, SpBot does no such "stale" tagging. As nobody showed interest in the implementation of DyceBot (who's doing the job on enwiki) on Commons Talk:GL#Automatic archival of Graphic Lab requests I didn't further follow this possibility and implemented the solution that was already available. --Patrick87 (talk) 03:49, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

Maury Markowitz (int:Talkpagelinktext) 14:49, 25 May 2017 (UTC)
To be more specific, the two sections "pull up maneuver" and "controlled climb" together make the skip. Perhaps the line between them could be made dashed or semi-transparent - or removed entirely? The "ballistic coast" is the glide. Maury Markowitz (int:Talkpagelinktext)

21:07, 29 August 2017 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in Ukraine

Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in Ukraine is on till September 30
---|---|---|
