Photo Credits

Hello Jane,

I hope I am doing this right as I have never contacted someone via Wikipedia before. I work for a lifestyle magazine and we would like to use one of your images of Haarlem. However, we would like to credit you under your real name rather than your username. Could you perhaps contact me via Email at stutz@tas-lifestylemagazin.de and let me know how we should credit you? We'd need the information by next week. :-)

all the best, Rebecca

Tasmanier (talk) 09:10, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi Rebecca, I sent you a response by mail to the address you mentioned. The proper way to credit my photos is with "Jane023, CC-BY-SA", unless it's an old photo that I uploaded under the GNU license. I believe those older licenses require adding a lot more information to the attribution (like the entire text of the license) so if that's not OK, then let me know and I will just change the license. My *intention* is to post everything here in such a way as to make it as easy as possible for other people to reuse, which I have now come to understand is best represented with the license called CC-BY-SA. Hello, Jane023!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Fans at grave of Jim Morrison.jpg

Hartelijke groet, Picasdre (talk) 09:04, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Hartelijke groet terug! File:Fan_kissing_grave_of_Oscar_Wilde.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi Jane, I've noticed the Creative Commons license you granted for that image of an old book. There is however an official position taken by the Wikimedia Foundation that "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain, and that claims to the contrary represent an assault on the very concept of a public domain". That means that photographs of two-dimensional works, where the artwork itself is no longer copyrighted, should always be free of copyright too. So you might want to replace the license with PD-art-100. Regards, De728631 (talk) 18:10, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

You're quite right. Feel free to update the whole category to reflect pd-old or whatever. I uploaded those with the same communist tool I use for my own photo's and it looks like I forgot to adjust the license. Jane023 (talk) 09:51, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at educational media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. The expression “educational” is to be understood according to its broad meaning of “providing knowledge; instructional or informative”. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Each of these other kinds of content have their own projects: Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wiktionary and Wikiquote. If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. Otherwise, consider an alternative outlet. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. Thank you for your understanding.

Your nomination has been reviewed and promoted
Congratulations! The image you nominated was reviewed and has now been promoted as a valued image. It is considered to be the most valued image on Commons within the scope:
Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 138.
If you would like to nominate another image, please do so at Valued images candidates.

Thanks, I already saw the nomination and the reason why. I will try to get a picture of the burned-out situation to illustrate how tragic it is. Jane023 (talk) 09:44, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
You could fotograph nr. 148 and 132 while you're there. Or maybe you would be putting them at risk that way if you're superstitious. ;P --Vera (talk) 13:05, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

Gebruik van foto van de Kaatsbaan

Jane,

<td style="vertical-align: top">
<a href="http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Haarlem_-_kaatsbaan.jpg"><img border="0"
src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/ce/Haarlem_-_kaatsbaan.jpg/100px-Haarlem_-_kaatsbaan.jpg"/></a></td>
<td style="vertical-align: top">
<div style="margin-bottom: 3px">
<strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huis_ter_Kleef">Huis ter Kleef</a>
</strong></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 3px">
<strong>on Wikipedia</strong></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 2px; font-size: 100%">
The Kaatsbaan is the only part of Castle "Ter Kleef" still standing.</div>
</td>

Je dient op "edit" te klikken om dit stukje html goed te zien. groet, Jane023 (talk) 07:58, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Category:Tulip mania

Unfortunately, "Category:Tulip mania" seems to be redundant and duplicative of previously-existing "Category:Tulipomania"... AnonMoos (talk) 14:57, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Yes, but Tulip Mania is the more common version of the name. I was trying to find out where "Tulipomania" comes from, as I agree, they should be merged. Jane023 (talk) 15:06, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
Both are OK, but only one is needed, and Tulipomania was established first, and is perhaps the internationally most common form. The fact that the English Wikipedia article is "Tulip mania" doesn't automatically mean that the Commons category needs to be identical in name... AnonMoos (talk) 21:32, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
Again, I agree, but I noticed the category is filled with non-Haarlem pictures, whereas "Tulip mania" refers specifically to the local stockjobbing market crash in the town of Haarlem. Tulipomania is more general term referring to other city exchanges, all based on The Tulipomania chapter in Charles Mackay's 1841 book. The two should not be considered the same, as one is based on on-going research into archives, and the other is frozen in time and space in 1841. Jane023 (talk) 10:02, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

On reflection (also considering the paintings in the Frans Hals Museum), I think maybe the Tulip Mania category should be renamed to "Tulip Mania, Haarlem". Tulipomania is just too big to fix. Jane023 (talk) 09:27, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
