Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Dear Jan Polák,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Hi. You've requested the renaming of an image. The image was on the list - and the renaming needed a long time - because your gallery is so big. So would you please split your Gallery? Image problems

Please stop uploading images which have copyright restriction we cannot use, so they have been nominated for deletion. If you did not take the photos yourself and they are copyright to someone else, or you found them on a website, please don't upload them unless you have permission of the copyright holder or they are clearly freely licenced. I only saw two of your uploaded flip-flop images that were properly licenced for us. We do not accept images with non-commercial or non-derivative restrictions, so please just be more careful as it gives us a lot of work reviewing the images and then getting them deleted because they are copyright violations. Boží muka v Novém Rychnově

Zdravím. Pokud v Novém Rychnově evidentně existují troje památkově chráněná boží muka (a není vyloučeno, že ještě i nějaká další, která památkově chráněná nejsou), tak je principiálně nevhodné, aby se kategorie určená pouze pro jedna z nich jmenovala tak, že by název kategorie nevyjadřoval, o která z nich jde. Takový název kategorie by byl zavádějící a chybný.

V zásadě jsou tři různé možnosti, jak situaci korektně řešit:

  • vytvořit pro každá z těch boží muk (respektive pro ta z nich, která už mají v Commons nějaké fotografie) samostatnou kategorii, ta by pak musela mít dostatečně výstižný, tedy dostatečně specifický název (problémem je, pokud daný objekt nemá žádné vlastní jméno ani žádné obecně vžité specifikující označení a pokud by popisná specifikace byla příliš krkolomná)
  • vytvořit zatím jen společnou kategorii pro všechna troje (popřípadě i další) boží muka v Novém Rychnově - taková kategorie by pak ovšem nemohla být považována za kategorii jedné konkrétní památky, takže by tím asi nebyl naplněn účel, kvůli kterému jste se snažil kategorii pro ta jedna boží muka zakládat
  • nevytvářet zatím pro boží muka v Novém Rychnově žádnou samostatnou kategorii a zařadit tu jednu jedinou fotku jen do příslušných nadřazených fotografií (to je v případě památek, od kterých máme jen jedinou fotku, nejstandardnější řešení)

Vytvářet kategorii pro jednu jedinou fotku je obecně poněkud předčasné a může to být někdy i kontraproduktivní, pokud negativa převažují nad pozitivy (i když já osobně se proti tomu tak zásadně nestavím). Pokud byste takovou kategorii založil alespoň s výstižným a odpovídajícím názvem, tak by bylo možno ji ponechat, ať už by byla pojmenovaná sebevíc krkolomně a ať by to bylo česky nebo anglicky. Ale zvažte prosím, jestli to skutečně má smysl, pokud se v dohledné době nechystáte pořizovat či nahrávat další fotky téže památky ani nevíte o nikom dalším takovém.

Chybně pojmenovanou kategorii bohužel bylo nutné buď smazat (a její obsah přesunout do příslušných nadkategorií), nebo přejmenovat na odpovídající název. Vzhledem k dosavadnímu obsahu té kategorie jsem zatím ve všech třech případech volil to první řešení. --ŠJů (talk) 22:55, 11 May 2015 (UTC)

Vzhledem k tomu, že zatím o žádných jiných Božích mukách v Novém Rychnově kategorie neexistovala, bylo možné je ponechat ve vytvořené kategorii. Navíc na Commons je řada jiných kategorií majících pouze jeden snímek. I ty, ŠJů, plánujete rušit? --Jan Polák (talk) 23:00, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
Zdravím. Myslím, že jsem poměrně jasně popsal, v čem byl problém a jaké byly možnosti řešení. Pokud existuje správně pojmenovaná a správně zakategorizovaná kategorie, která obsahuje pouze jeden snímek, zpravidla není třeba ji rušit. Pokud ale existuje kategorie s nejasným, chybným nebo zavádějícím názvem, pak je třeba situaci nějak řešit. Pro daný případ jsem zmínil dokonce tři možné způsoby řešení a naznačil jsem i kritéria, podle kterých lze vybírat, které z těch tří řešení je nejvhodnější. --ŠJů (talk) 14:26, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

Zdravím. Taky jsem si všiml cenných fotek a ze zvědavosti jsem nahlédl, komu a jak se podařilo získat na ně svobodnou licenci. Ale moudrý z toho nejsem. Píše se tam, že fota poskytl M. Černý, ale není zřejmé, jestli je taky jejich autorem - ostatně do kolonky "autor" jste nevyplnil jeho jméno, ale jako autora jste uvedl jen onu webovou stránku historiesuchdola.cz, nikoliv pana Černého, což situaci poněkud znepřehledňuje. Web sice uvádí, že jeho obsah je pod licencí cc-by-sa-4.0, ale asi by to chtělo ujasnit, jestli pan Černý je skutečně autorem fotek. A to co nejrychleji, protože soubory s nevyjasněnými autorskými právy jsou do týdne smazány. --ŠJů (talk) 14:35, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
