Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Pictures from www.hungary1956.com
[edit]Why do you think that the images from www.hungary1956.com that you uploaded are free use? On the page footer is says: "Copyright (c) 2005 - 2006. The American Hungarian Federationtm. All rights reserved." And "all rights reserved" does by far not mean "for any purpose" that is written on the images' description. Is there a permission I don't know of? If not, the images have to be deleted. --Matt314 09:25, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Istvan, thanks for your message! You wrote that "these images are offered for download to commemorate the event". Well, images on Commons have to be released under a free license, see Commons:Licensing#Acceptable_licenses. So the images can only be on commons if you have a more extensive permission for the pictures, so it must also be possible for third parties to used them (with or without modifications, even a commercial use must be allowed). So I am afraid that the pictures cannot remain on Commons unless you get a permission by the copright holder. --Matt314 18:43, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hello! Thanks for that link, I had not seen the Wikipedia entry on their page before. There is (unfortunately) still a little problem: As they are "supporting Wikipedia", how do they think about the reuse of their files by third parties? Thank you for asking UED77, as a native speaker he might be helpful to resolve the issue. --Matt314 09:27, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
- AHF only writes: "AHF believes that all pictures shown below are in the public domain, if there are any issues please contact us to discuss." It isn't mean they are really public domains. --Beyond silence 13:53, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
Boots
[edit]Thanks for your message. I have undeleted the photo but you (or somebody else) needs to explain why you think that the copyright owner allows anybody to use this photo for any purpose. See Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Hungarians atop stalin boots 1956.jpg. Thuresson 02:08, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
- The source (American Hungarian Federation) states that this is public domain. (A second argument is that this is obviously an historic event, so a thumb sized depiction would be fair use nonetheless.) In any case, from everything we know, there is no copyright holder because the pictures are in the public domain. I also note that the person requesting deletion is an SPA. Image deletion warning | Image:Hungarians inspecting a tank.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. |
