Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

תאריכי צילום תמונות

בוקר טוב, שים לב שבתמונות האחרונות שהעלית ציינת את התאריך של היום (22.1.2020) בעוד שעל התמונה עצמה מוטבע התאריך 1.12.2019. כדאי לשנות את התאריך שמופיע בתיאור כדי להיות מדוייקים. מומלץ גם להוסיף תיאור מילולי של התמונה כדי שאנשים יוכלו להיעזר בה. תודה, DGtal (talk) 07:39, 22 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The author has agreed to the Wikimedia terms of use as part of logging into Israel Hiking Map. This includes:

Please note that the author name is "אתר נלך", as shown on the relevant Wikimedia and OSM pages. This is Hebrew for "Nelech website", which corresponds to the website shown in the watermark of the image. Non-Hebrew speakers can also validate this by searching the term "אתר נלך" online.

We would like to understand in which circumstances such an approval must be sent:

Is it required by every Wikimedia Commons account? If not, please clarify what is the criteria used for requesting such an approval.
For an account that was requested to send an approval, does this approval need to be sent for every image that was already uploaded?
For an account that was requested to send an approval, will it be required to send the approval for future image uploads?

You can find the requirements in English in COM:VRT.

If you are not the the original author of the work of if the file published elsewhere in the net before it was uploaded to Commons you need to sent permission. Or in any other case when the common sense says that the uploader may not be the author or the copyright holder. In this case, the author is clearly the owner of the uploaded. They have initiated the upload, and added the link to this image to Open Street Map, as I've explained above.

We would appreciate answers to the above 3 questions. We truly want to understand what is the difference between this image and the other 6000+ images that users of our website and application have contributed to Wikimedia Commons.

When a person takes a photo and uploads it to Commons then no action is required. If someone took a photo and uploaded it to your website and did not transfer the copyright to you or release it under a free license like photos uploaded to the Flickr website for example (see CC-BY-3.0, CC-BY-SA-2.0) then you can upload them to Commons and license reviewer will check and approve.

I am looking now at the files you have uploaded and unfortunately it's seem to be problematic. The fact that the images have been uploaded to your website does not mean that the images have been released under our free license and therefore you will not be able to upload these files to Commons. The images are not uploaded to our website. The users upload the images to Wikimedia using our website and app.

Let me describe the process by which this image of a תפוח סדום tree was added to Wikimedia. This is the typical process by which our user community contributes open images to Wikimedia Commons.

I, as the zstadler Open Street Map user and a member of the user community, added a tree to Open Street Map, using the Israel Hiking Map app.

While I was creating the tree with the app, I was offered to add some images. I took two pictures, including the above, and then submitted my entire contribution: geographic location, description and the images.
As a result, my images were uploaded to Wikimedia, with me as an author. Then a tree element was added to Open Street Map, including links to the newly-uploaded images on Wikimedia.

The result is that the source link is the Wikimedia Commons image.

Similarly, members of our user community can edit existing Open Street Map elements and contribute additional images that are uploaded to Wikimedia.

I would like to emphasis that Israel Hiking Map is an open data project that promotes contribution to open data platforms such as Open Street Map and Wikimedia Commons. We do not want to store or have any rights on the contributions our user community donates to the world. So far, we have helped our user community to contribute more than 6000 images to Wikimedia commons. The average for April 2023 was 45 images per day. We would like to continue support our community efforts and increase its contribution to Wikimedia Commons and Open Street Map.

I think it's problematic. this is the link to the upload to openstreetmap. It's says nothing about license.In comparing, when you uploading file to Commons you are declaring that you are the copyright holder and you release the file under XYZ license. but nothing about license in this link. In my opinion it's not ok. it's worth to open a wide discussion in Commons:Village pump/Copyright to get more opinions. -- Geagea (talk) 14:30, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
