Hi @Imissdisco: Regarding Commons:Deletion requests/File:Dan Trotta at the Gale Anne Hurd Masterclass (6829984489).jpg, if you want to verify your account/identity, you can send an e-mail to info-commonswikimedia.org
using an email address that can be verified online or by sending any documentation that allows OTRS to verify your identity such as library card, gym membership card, etc. (but please do not send any official ID, such as provincial ID or passport). Please be aware that the OTRS system that handles e-mail is operated entirely by volunteers. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to respond here. - User:Taivo, your decision was invoked in this discussion on en-wiki. Please reconsider. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 18:57, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
- User:Imissdisco, please let me know what's going on, but on the en-wiki. I have little experience with Commons. You might as well follow up on the talk page of HJ Mitchell, where you left that message. Taivo, I suppose I appreciate the "out of scope" rationale, but it is important to realize that as far as we can tell we have a case of pretty sophisticated online harassment here, where Geo Swan took an online argument into Commons and then Wikipedia space, taking advantage cleverly of the rather complicated procedures for BLP complaints in order to outsmart their opponent. Please have a look at the discussion board on en-wiki. I don't know if Imissdisco cares about this block now that the picture is gone; I just want you to know that I had blocked them on en-wiki from editing the article, but I lifted that because they were essentially provoked into an edit war that they couldn't win against an experienced editor. The question is whether y'all will draw a similar conclusion here. Drmies (talk) 00:34, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Imissdisco: Question A desire to be involved in an ongoing discussion is, unfortunately, not a valid rationale as to why you should be unblocked. COM:BP requires an understanding of the issue and a credible commitment to discontinue. Regardless of the actions of another individual, you are responsible for your own actions. Could tell us if you believe that this or this is appropriate behaviour? Opening 7 additional, redundant deletion discussions while first was opened is considerably disruptive. If a similar situation occurs again, would there be anything you would do differently? --Ìch heiss Nat. Redd mìt mìr.🥨 04:36, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
- User:Nat, what we have here is a brand-new user who didn't know the rules and complicated procedures and was fighting a BLP struggle against an editor who baited him with superior editing skills. It seems to me that those are very much extenuating circumstances. I'll note that Geo Swan remains blocked on en-wiki after extensive discussion, and might be on the verge of a ban. Plus, they refused to take responsibility for their own actions. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 16:05, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
Hey Nat, thanks for getting back to me. And thanks again to Drmies for running interference while I clumsily attempt to navigate this new world.
I felt completely victimized by Swan. What started as a simple request devolved into something pretty ugly. I got angry because I felt helpless and baited. I swore and insulted them. But I guess my question to you would be: how do you react when you feel powerless? Do you temper your reaction because it might be “disruptive”? Everyone has a plan until they get hit. What might be “proper” in theory seemingly goes out the window in practice.
Anyway the photo is down, thank you to the person who removed it. And thanks to everyone who took time to help with advice. And I would do things differently if something like this happened again: I’d learn to use the site more efficiently so I could say the exact same things to Geo Swan, but in a more direct and efficient way. Whoever they are, they used a bully pulpit to antagonize and terrorize me. I didn’t know what they might do or say on the wiki page they created about me. Keep in mind you know how all this works, I don’t. Anyone that abuses their power in that way shouldn’t have any, IMO. For context, the wiki page was deemed an “attack page” by an admin. So no, no contrition here.
Again, thanks for the time. This experience is definitely going in my next script (names will be changed of course) 😉 Imissdisco (talk) 16:36, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
- Fair enough, Nat. Hope you never find yourself on the receiving end of what I went through. Just in case Geo is watching, I'm looking into pursuing legal action. I've reached out to admins at en-wiki and am getting advice on how to proceed. Cheers Imissdisco (talk) 19:01, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Imissdisco: I would caution you about your next steps as English Wikipedia has a strict policy against legal threats (please see en:Wikipedia:No legal threats). Ìch heiss Nat. Redd mìt mìr.🥨 02:21, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
Not a threat. Exploring options. People over on en wiki are pretty disgusted with what Geo did, and have been incredibly helpful, which is more than I can say for the group here. But thanks for your concern Imissdisco (talk) 12:25, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
