Lord Mayor photo
[edit]You uploaded an image for your article on 1970s Lord Mayor of London Lindsay Ring (nice job with that expansion, by the way!) but I noticed that this image is listed as "own work" despite being a phone photo of a pre-existing image. For that reason, it is almost certainly a copyright violation. Because this seems to be a good-faith mistake from a hard-working editor, I wanted to double-check before tagging it as a copyvio for speedy deletion. If it is a copyright violation, no biggie. Happens all the time. ~ Pbritti (talk) 04:45, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for that. I find this such a difficult area. The phot was given to me by a family member who had taken the original and is now dead. I took the photo of it and it is my undethat this places it in the category of own work. If that is not the case let me know and feel free to take it down Iainmacintyre (talk) 08:12, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
- If it's from a family member, chances are it was never copyrighted according to the standards of US law. However, you will have to provide the name of the person who took the photo and the date of the original photo, replacing the "own work" description. I'll try to help if you need anything! ~ Pbritti (talk) 16:32, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for that offer. It would certainly not have been copyrighted. The person who took the photo was Lorna Nichols, his sister-in-law. Sadly she did not date the photo so there is no way of determining that other than a guesstimate which I imagine is not acceptable. How best to proceed? - Approximation is acceptable! If you can narrow it to a few-year-sized range, select 2 Jan of the year in the middle as the date of creation and just describe the date uncertainty in the description (and caption, if you want). Your understanding and helpfulness is deeply appreciated. Thank you! ~ Pbritti (talk) 20:25, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, I can do that. Do I now make these changes by editing the file summary in Commons? Thanks for your help a useful tutorial. Iainmacintyre (talk) 09:50, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
