First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Your images

[edit]

Hi. I see you are uploading lots of images made by Ben Heine, from various sources.

  1. You are describing them as "own work". Are you Ben Heine? If yes, how can we check that?
  2. Many of those sources are copyrighted. If Ben Heine sold theirs works to them, then the copyright owners will have something to say about this.

Please take a look at Commons:Licensing and take a moment to fix the description of all the images you have uploaded. Thanks in advance. Regards. --Dodo 11:09, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Ben Heine revisited By Marcin.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Image deletion warning All images uploaded by User:Guy1002 has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hello, I was contacted by the administrator called "DODO" They wrote me this :

My answer : Yes, I'm Ben Heine I'm a cartoonist, caricaturist and painter (See the page on Wiki). It's the first time I'm creating pages on Wikipedia. All the images are my creations, except my portrait by Marcin Bondarowicz, but he gave me his permission to use the portrait with the chosen copyright.(He can be reached atbondarowicz@wp.pl). Is it possible to change the description of the image without having to reload them. Dodo wanted to verify my identity. Please, can an administrator contact me at heinebenjamin@hotmail.com so I could prove that I'm Ben Heine.

Thanks in advance.

Ben Heine (www.benheine.com , www.benjaminheine.blogspot.com)

I've sent you an E-mail about 45 minutes ago, and I'm waiting for a reply.
Best regards, Yuval YChat15:08, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Let's see:
  • Yes, we could try to contact with the person behind that e-mail addres, but it's really easy to create a fake account on hotmail, so it's way far better that you leave a message at your official blog.
  • It's even better that you put a note on your official page stating that you release your works under the CC-BY-SA and the GFDL licenses, so anyone will be able to check the copyright status of your work, even if they are uploaded by other people.
  • We still have the problem of the magazines and other media that have previously published your works. Have they any kind of copyright over them?
  • I'm afraid that we cannot trust the word of the uploader about the permission given by another author if we don't see a copy of it. Please take a look at Commons:Email templates.
Thanks. --Dodo 15:13, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've looked in the website, and sent an email to the address which was written there. Now that I've seen your messege, I've forwarded the email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org . His E-mail looks real to me. Best regards, Yuval YChat13:33, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So, I'm a young cartoonist, painter and caricaturist. I make political drawing. I have studied Journalism and Art... I live in Brussels and work for some papers here such ad the 2nd national newspaper "La Libre Belgique". Many of my cartoons have been shown on International Websites and real exhibitions...

I work for noble causes, defending the oppressed ones. I have recently drewn many cartoons for the Palestinian cause. I intend to organize a Workshop in Ramallah with many worldwide cartists, such as the famous Brazilian cartoonist Carlos Latuff (who is a friend of mine, and has also a nice page on Wikimedia and Wikipedia...).

I have a Website (Flash) and a Blog (Updated everyday)

Of course. Sorry, it wasn't enough?

That can be just fine, just write about yourself here. May I ask how old are you, and say that you seems to be a lovely person? =) Yuval YChat16:22, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, Yuval, I think I have understood what to do, is it OK? You can change a bit the form if you feel like. Ben

It looks like the wikipedia article about you... Oh well =)
By the way, you have one image with three names:
Could you choose one of the names, do I can delete the other duplications?
Yuval YChat16:44, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was a bit lazy, I'll try to change a bit the bio, you're right. Just one little thing : How do I put the text higher on the page?

Please you can delete :

And keep :

You are so kind to help me, I'm so grateful. Where do you live in Israel? Haifa?

This image - Image:UN in Lebanon (Ben Heine).jpg has no license tag. please edit it, and add one. I suggest {{self2|GFDL|cc-by-sa-2.5}}. I'm tagging your images as [[category:Ben Heine]], and I've noticed you've drawn some unflattering cartoons about Israel. Oh well, it's a free world =) I live in Akko, Israel =) Yuval YChat16:59, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, do you know which licence I have to choose and how to change it? I read the page http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Copyright_tags , but I couldn't find my country : Belgium. I want my works to be available to anyone.

Ben

{{self2|GFDL|cc-by-sa-2.5}} can be just fine. Yuval YChat17:13, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You know, I don't want to criticize Israeli people. As you may have read, I'm a Peace activist. You live in a nice town. Thank you so much for helping.

--Guy1002 17:11, 24 November 2006 (UTC)Guy1002[reply]

That's it... I dare you to draw some cartoons about Terrorism against Israel. It's too easy to look at one side, while forgeting the other. Yuval YChat17:13, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Yuval, I strongly apologize for shocking you with my cartoons. Please don't take it personal.

I'll do what you knidly suggest. Thanks for putting in the category Ben Heine. DO you work in Wikimedia as a volunteer? It's so complicated.

Yuval, I changed the licence of this image :Image:UN_in_Lebanon_(Ben_Heine).jpg . Is it OK now? Is there a big difference in this licence and the one on this image image:Iran_cartoon,_occupation_(Ben_Heine).jpg ? The licencing versions are a bit different (2.5...) --87.244.138.73 17:35, 24 November 2006 (UTC)Guy1002[reply]

I also wanted to ask you if I can change my loggin name (From Guy1002 to Ben Heine).

DO I have to delete the Website's URL (and just leave "OWN WORK" for the Source of the images?

Thank you so much.

Ben

Wow... Easy... Let me reply you ;-)
Like most of the wikipedians... I'm also an administrator here, as you can see =)
BTW, in Special:Preferences, put a on Remember my login on this computer.
2.5 is the latest version of the CC. I haven't real the full license, so I guess you could use it as you like.. :-]
About changing your username, I'll seek the details asap.
Best regards, Yuval YChat17:46, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have done what you asked in theSpecial:Preferences. What is it foe exactly? Finally, do I have to delete the Website's URL (and just leave "Own Work" for the image source? I apologize for all these questions. You must think I'm silly...

THANK YOU.

Ben

They're your images... I don't mind.. ;-) I suggest you to ask in Commons:Administrators' noticeboard, how to change your username. Yuval YChat18:16, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest you to read Commons:Welcome , for more information about using the commons.
By the way, Image:Damaged Um al-Nasser Mosque in the centre of Beit Hanoun.jpg was similar to Image:Damaged Um al-Nasser Mosque in the centre of Beit Hanoun (Ben Heine).jpg, which haven't been used, and was 4,972,210 bytes (!). I've resized the image to 1024x720 and uploaded it to Image:Damaged Um al-Nasser Mosque in the centre of Beit Hanoun.jpg.

Best regards, Yuval YChat18:23, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, that's great, you are just so perfect! I mean it. I had uploaded the image a 2nd time because the 1st one was too heavy indeed. I sent a msg to the other administrators, as you suggested, and I'll now read Commons:Welcome.

Stay in touch...

Do I need to send a permission by Marcin Bonfarowicz (He did thmy portrait : Image:Ben Heine seen by Marcin Bondarowicz.jpg ; or is it clear that he agrees?

I also want to ask you if anybody can erase or change my page on Wikipedia or Wikimedia? For instance somebody who wouldn't like my art...

Shalom. Ben

Your userpage

[edit]

I deleted the text after the first section, since the rest can be found in en:Ben Heine, and your userpage is not the place for that. Nobody is going to erase the Wikipedian article about you. Don't worry.

OK Yuval,

many thanks,

I'll read that (Change the user name). I must leave my computer for 2 hours. Thanks a lot. See you in a bit hopefully. I have just renamed all the files in my gallery... Talk to you later on. Ben

Some doubts I have...

[edit]
  • At http://www.benheine.com/ we can read "Artwork by Ben Heine © All rights reserved". So it seems we have a problem now: have you given permission only to Wikimedia? If not, why don't you change the "All rights reserved" to a note about the publishing under CC-BY-SA/GFDL dual license?
  • We still have the problem of the magazines and other media that have previously published you works. Have they any kind of copyright over them? We don't know...

Regards. --Dodo 13:39, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Dodo, you're right, in my Website, there is written : "Artwork by Ben Heine © All rights reserved". I'll change that into : "Works published under CC-BY-SA/GFDL dual license.". By the way, is this license also good for artworks such as cartoons? (I read in the Wiki page, but it's not specified.)

I think all the artworks sent to the other media (Websites and magazines) are copyright free, but I should check. I gave them my artworks without asking anything in return, so I don't see how they could possess them now, I'm still the initial creator... All these artworks are also either on my Website or on Blog.

Thank you.

Kind regards.
