Categorising images
[edit]You are adding images to Commons, unfortunately you choose for uploading in the wrong category. Category:Ships by name is intended as a mother category for other categories, not for images. So if you add images of the same ship, please create a category for her and that category can be a daughter of Ships by name and the category of ships by the particular country. I changed the categories for you. --Stunteltje (talk) 21:55, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you. I'm sorry for these mistakes. I'm new in adding pictures on Wikimedia and i did't take enough care of the categories. By the way, how can i create a category for all the ships of a same company ? Grünen (talk) 17:35, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
- I had to learn it myself too, no problem. Categories can be created by just adding [[Category:New daughter name]] in the description of a certain file. The new name category is seen in red, when you save the page. When you click on the new name, a new empty page opens. There you put the [[Category:Mother category]] and save the page. That's all. But please be careful in adding categories. I myself make categories of at least 2 images of a certain ship. Except fot the IMO category, every IMO number has its own category. --Stunteltje (talk) 19:52, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:43, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
