-- Wikimedia Commons Welcome (talk) 07:11, 9 May 2022 (UTC) Garth den Heyer (born 28 February, 1959 in Dunedin, New Zealand) is a researcher of policing and is a Professor/Instructor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Arizona State University. He was also a Senior Research Fellow with the Police Foundation (now the National Policing Institute) from 2008 to 2021) and a Fellow with the Scottish Institute of Policing Research from 2014 to 2021.
He was educated at Hastings Boys High School, Hastings, New Zealand. His tertiary qualifications include a Bachelor of Business Studies (Economics) from Massey University, Master of Science (Financial Economics) from the University of London, Master of Strategic Studies (Counterterrorism and Intelligence) from Victoria University and a Doctorate in Public Policy from Charles Sturt University.
He was a member of the New Zealand Police for more than 38 years and retired in 2018. He was the Manager: Counterterrorism and Emergency Management from 2005 to 2014. Also during this period, he served as a strategic advisor to the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands for more than 20 months from 2006 to 2008 and designed the strategic plan and the exit strategy for the mission.
In recent years, he completed research on various aspects of policing, counterterrorism and transnational gangs.
