Hi!

[edit]

I'm gonna tell you for the last time that these images Enna35-Auditorium dell'Università.jpg, Enna1-Euno, Castello di Lombardia.JPG, Enna5-Teatro Garibaldi.jpg are NOT copyviol. so I ask you to restore them. I'd like to hav an answer from you, and don't tell me "I did what I could": if you don't agree with me about restoring these files, tell me why. Give an evidence, a proof for which they mustn't be restored. Please, post me a message on my talk psge if you want. --Max 29 giu 2007, 23.02 (UTC)

Image deletion warning Template:Trademarked-Tolkien has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hi Eugene! Maybe you could look at Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Flag of Chechnya.svg, translate and maybe close (keep/delete). Cheers! / Fred J 21:46, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On my opinion it's holy war around "what is Chechnya": en:Republic of Chechnya or en:Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. May be best solution will be to move each flag on fully qualified name, delete Image:Flag of Chechnya.svg and protect it from recreation. --EugeneZelenko 15:29, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have uploaded Image:Flag of Chechen Republic since 2004.svg. Is that okay filename? If so, then I will ask SieBot to replaced it everywhere, then I will delete it. / Fred J 17:09, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think image name is fine. --EugeneZelenko 15:19, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Now someone deleted my recent upload as a duplicate of the badly named file. I think this is a hopeless project. / Fred J 17:35, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Reuploaded and the old file was retagged as bad name. /Lokal_Profil 18:10, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And now all the uses of "Flag of Chechnya.svg" have been replaced. /Lokal_Profil 01:14, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks all. I never said I would leave this project indefinitely, and I probably won't. :-)

The thing is, there are several issues that bother me, such as copyright issues; the foundation's demand that we follow the freedomdefined.org license (which we still don't and they haven't pressed us); and whether to be as restrictive or permittive as possible. And there are no clear guidelines on anything. And it really pains me that Commons could host a lot more than it does without any problem, while there are stuff that it does host that could possibly be a serious liability, and I'm not sure that is the right direction. So I feel quite unmotivated at the moment. / Fred J 16:26, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

POTY Svenska translation ('invite2' message)

Hi! Need add Svenska translation for message 'invite2'

Thanks. --Kaganer 12:49, 27 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, done. / Fred J 15:03, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Fred, thanks for doing that one!
Swedish is still missing the wiki pages and the announcements, as well as a designated "language contact" to respond to queries. I see above you are feeling a bit unmotivated; how do you feel about POTY? Are you interested in helping out? If not, would you be able to maybe prod some other Swedish speakers to do these tasks? I would really like to see full participation possible for Swedish voters...

Good to see you more active again Fred - you have been missed. Let me know if I can help with any on the inactivity issues - you will have probably have seen that I will deal with inactive CUs by the end of the week in accordance with my post here. I don't know if you noticed, but I was just working on Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section. If you know a way to sort the list by alphabet would be great. Otherwise I'll get it done faster on my own, but perhaps you'd like to double-check my actions when I'm done. Last time there were some errors and it's easy to make mistakes when there is so many numbers and users to check and notify etc.

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Casino_Cosmopol_i_Göteborg_den_19_december_2004..JPG. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. PD-Coa

[edit]

Thanks for the work on the template. That was probably what was needed from the start. I quite liked the wording "Note: This tag is obsolete! Nothing is public domain without a reason." Maybe that wording should go on {{PD}} as well? /Lokal_Profil 14:14, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm, yes I think it was necessary.
I don't know about the PD tag, but in case you'd like to change it, I've unprotected it.
Fred J (talk) 14:40, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I've added the text to the PD tag. Not that I expect it to make a huge difference since it's been depricated for close to two years, but it's better then nothing. /Lokal_Profil 17:04, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Dagensbild

[edit]

Hey Fred, I thought you might know. What's this template it for? It has a ton of subpages that seem like they're no longer needed. I'm just trying to tidy up the template namespace a little and thought maybe these can safely be deleted. Rocket000 15:17, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was used to show Swedish-related images on the Swedish main page, but no-one wanted to continue it. It showed images of quality and that are interesting, and I think it could still be potentially useful for finding good quality Swedish images. But if they bother you so much in your clean up efforts, I won't stop you from deleting.
Fred J (talk) 15:40, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's not the name, it's the concept. If we get to where we can't work through our disputes without an arbitration committee (of whatever name) Commons won't be nearly as much fun. ++Lar: t/c 17:00, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think that it would be advisable for the administrator Lupo to start such proceedings (dispute). It is clear that we have reached saturation point at one of the discutants. -- Rainman 17:45, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You don't have to be administrator to post at the disputes noticeboard. You can do it yourself. I think Lupo has other things to do than to continue discussing the Croatian flag, a subject he is probably not to acquainted with and perhaps not very interested in really....

Yes of course, how can he be 'crat if he isn't an admin.
I suppose a formal request could be made at meta? I'll do it in a few days, if no-one has objected before that.
Fred J (talk) 15:01, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually we were looking at that on Meta in the past few days - Larry proved on testwiki that you can be a crat without being a sysop but I doubt it would be appreciated by the community! Your comment for this picture reads:

A sign with the inscription "1607" and C IV I think (Christian IV of Denmark)

In fact, the monogram of Christian IV is a C with an (Arabic numeral) 4 inside - this C has an AK inside. According to the Malmöhus webpage (http://www.malmo.se/kulturbibliotek/malmomuseer/slottetmalmohus/christianivsflygelbyggnadsivertgrubbe.4.7101b483110ca54a56280005516.html) the CAK stands for "Christian" and his queen "Anna Katarina".

Ah, there you go. So I learned something new today. Thanks.

Removal of template on piano image

[edit]

I have to be the doubting Thomas in this situation. In this edit on Image:Piano.jpg, you removed a call for source information on an image. Do you really believe that it is true that he took it and releases it?

  • First of all, I doubt that he took it. It is at a perfect angle, has perfect lighting, and is perfectly removed from a background or shot in a professional studio. Here are promotional photos to look at and compare: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6].
  • Secondly, I cannot imagine a photo of this quality being released to public domain.
  • Thirdly, the nature of the user does not convince me that he is even knowledgeable of policy or standard procedure. For example, on Image:Bechstein D280 top view.jpg, he says that the company gave permission, which again, I doubt. But he made no attempt to send permission to OTRS or ask how to confirm this permission, if it was really given. Also, he has been uploading logos such as Image:CBechstein Logo en.jpg which I believe are not appropriate files for the Commons (and the licensing on that file is probably not true, unless he is the creator of a logo for a company that is 150 years old), but I have a bad history with logos, so I won't push that issue. If you honestly believe that what he says is true, then I will leave it alone.

Additionally, I have heard that, for some reason, it is my job to find the site it was from if I suspect it is a copyvio. I wholly disagree with this, and if this is your stance then I will bring it up again (I assume there has been discussion about this before) at the Village pump.

People seem to get the impression that by me voting delete or adding these templates to images that I am some kind of 'deletionist' for the Commons. I am not. I am trying to enforce the rules that have been set forth for the integrity of the Commons, and it is impossible to do so unless you use common sense. ALTON .ıl 07:04, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hej Fred,

As you probably know, meta:H:UL has been activated. This has caused an extra work load on Commons:Changing username, and there are very few active bureaucrats around these days. It would be great if you could keep an eye on our local requests page to alleviate the burden as much as possible. Please forgive me if you think this message was somehow innapropriate, it is not my intention to "make people do their work" - we're all volunteers and do the best we can. Cheers, Patrícia msg 17:49, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'll give you my insight about your questions, from my short experience as a rookie 'crat :). We ask for crosslinks when users claim that they are "User X on Project Y", that is, there must be some sort of link on that page mentioning the account here on Commons. This is to avoid someone creating an account and grabbing a name from a known wikimedian, then screwing up with it - when it was not the same person at all. Lar has made a handy little text that you can transclude on a request, when you don't find any crosslink.
You may find an error upon renaming someone, stating that the chosen username is "reserved for global login". This is a known bug and will be hopefully fixed somehow - it usually means that the requesting party has done account unification before doing the rename, and so the non-renamed account is left out. Those people will have to wait for the bug resolution; I've placed two such requests on Commons:Changing username#Requests that cannot currently be fulfilled for now, we'll see how the bug thing goes.
We're roughly following the English Wikipedia renaming guidelines, although in the end it's bureaucrat discretion to accept performing a rename or not. So far I haven't seen any complicated cases, but if you don't know what to do in a certain circumstance, just leave it, we can bug someone more knowledgeful to look into that ;P.
Cheers :) Patrícia msg 21:37, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Fred J/Archive 8. I am writing to you to inform you that because of inactivity, you may lose your adminship on Commons.

Commons has a new policy on admin activity, Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, taken into use on June 13, 2007 (after a two-week poll on the proposed policy's talk page).

If you want to keep your adminship, you have to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days. Note that if you don't make 5 admin actions in the following 5 months, you will then lose the adminship anyways.

Thank you,
