Cropping - and overwriting - files

[edit]

Hello Franzekafka!
If you need cropped versions of photographs please do NOT just overwrite the original files! That's rude. Instead you can - should - upload them with a new name. For example by adding "...(crop).jpg" at the end of the name. --Tsui (talk) 20:21, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Наllo Tsui! I am very sorry, I didn't know that. Can I ask you to explain how to do it correctly? I use "Upload a new version of this file" - and it overwrites the file. Where is the right button? Thank for help! Franzekafka (talk) 14:17, 6 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

About the parent categories of Category:Gender equality and Category:Gender differences

[edit]

Dear Franzekafka, I saw that you changed a parent of Category:Pink tax. It looks like you have knowledge about the topic gender. Now I wonder how Category:Gender equality and Category:Gender differences are linked together by their parents, at first sight they are not. Shouldn't a lot of their parents be the same? JopkeB (talk) 05:51, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dear JopkeB, thank you for bringing it to my attention. There is a lot of confusion in those categories now, as the word gender has at least 4 meanings. It's a long work of tidying up (wikidata are also messed up), but I'll be sure to take a look. What do you mean by linked together by their parents? Both cats lay in Category:Gender in the end. Franzekafka (talk) 06:13, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your quick reaction. Yes, in the end, but not directly. I would have thought that they would share at least one category, and perhaps more. Good luck with fixing these gender categories, you are doing a good job! JopkeB (talk) 06:26, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Now they just do that through subcategories. We'll see (I usually start ordering from subcats to mother cats). You're doing a good job too. Good luck! Franzekafka (talk) 06:34, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Ukrainians wearing vyshyvankas

[edit]

Вітання! Category:People from Ukraine wearing vyshyvankas by city і Category:People from Ukraine wearing vyshyvankas by region‎ вже є в категорії Category:Ukrainians wearing vyshyvankas! Не треба з підкатегорій дублювати файли в надкатегорію. Микола Василечко (talk) 19:55, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

І ще запитання. Ви сьогодні поставили на вилучення категорію Category:People from Ukraine wearing vyshyvankas

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category

[edit]

When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with {{SD|C2}} if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or {{SD|C1}} if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:People from Ukraine wearing vyshyvankas. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion). Jmabel ! talk 04:37, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Similarly for Category:Male clothing in Ukraine. - Jmabel ! talk 04:42, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
