Boundary conditions

[edit]

The 100/200 edit filter on editors displayed in this report was arbitrary. As an experiment here is a 1000/2000 edit count filter version which makes the 6 image matches given today jump to 20:

I'm open to suggestions as to whether it is worth increasing the limit in the main report or not. :-) -- (talk) 05:37, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure about vandalism, but it picked up File:Cidgomes04012007.jpg which was a very poorly executed (low-res) overwrite. --99of9 (talk) 06:45, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And File:Chris Huhne MP crop.jpg included badly balanced recolouring. --99of9 (talk) 06:46, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And File:Ed Miliband 2.jpg more bad recolouring. --99of9 (talk) 06:48, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, the report has been changed to 1000/2000 as the total user edits filter. For a week at a time, 20 images is still fairly low. A conservative approach is probably best, though we should take care to balance finding vandalism with less contentious changes. -- (talk) 07:46, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Is it possible to have old and new revisions pictured, or maybe the image dimensions? -mattbuck (Talk) 10:59, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The old revisions are available in the revisions db table as links, but the thumbnails cannot be embedded into the wikitable (of course stuff suppressed from the log should not be shown in the report anyway). The image dimensions are also available in the old_image db table and can be added. Saying this, I'm hesitant to try to include all revisions, as some images which have a revert war (which we see on some flags and maps) have long slightly pointless histories. I'll ponder how to do something a bit more intelligent, such as a maximum of information about the last 3 images in the file version history, which may take me a few days to find time to play around with. -- (talk) 11:37, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, thumbnail was a vain hope, but image dimensions helps us know if the image has been replaced by something significantly different, eg a 6MP image replaced by a 0.6 MP image. -mattbuck (Talk) 11:51, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
What was the template to turn date!filename style archive references into full urls? I think there was a handy template to do this for us. I have got as far as adding a list like "20141020121823!Ed_Miliband_2.jpg 20141015002010!Ed_Miliband_2.jpg", which would be easy to incorporate as a cell of past links. -- (talk) 13:26, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I'm not sure one actually exists (outside of flagged revs wikis with that extra timestamp parameter to file pages). To actually make one someone would need to add an md5 lua module. However to make such a link directly from sql, you can do something like
select concat( 'https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/', substr( md5( oi_name ), 1, 1 ), '/', substr( md5( oi_name ), 1, 2 ), '/', oi_archive_name ) 'url' from oldimage where oi_name = 'David_Cameron_official.jpg';

:-) I think solving everything in SQL starts to look overly complex. I'll play with mashing in a bit of Python, which will probably add the handy bits that Mattbuck would like to see without too much awkwardness.
✓ Done Using pywikibot's getFileVersionHistory() rather than bending SQL further. -- (talk) 08:49, 21 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summary

[edit]

@Fae: , could you please add the last upload date/time to the edit summary the bot makes? So instead of

  • (diff | hist) . . mb User:Fæ/BLP overwrites‎; 09:10 . . (+1)‎ . . ‎Faebot (talk | contribs | block)‎ (Most recent change File:Katy_Perry_2011.jpg) [rollback]

we'd see

  • (diff | hist) . . mb User:Fæ/BLP overwrites‎; 09:10 . . (+1)‎ . . ‎Faebot (talk | contribs | block)‎ (Most recent change File:Katy_Perry_2011.jpg at 2014-10-26 00:16) [rollback]

? The bot current makes lots of changes, but it's not immediately obvious whether they're something new. -mattbuck (Talk) 11:52, 26 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done using timestamp of current image. -- (talk) 12:09, 26 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant, thanks. -mattbuck (Talk) 12:58, 26 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I'm not 100% sure why the additional minor changes are made. It could be because I'm synthesising file version history from commonswiki_p data and API generated data. These might have different lags from "real time". However it doesn't seem worth the volunteer programming time to do testing or more sophisticated messaging analysis to pin this down or attempt to "fix" it... if it works, don't break it. :-) -- (talk) 13:13, 26 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

upload question

[edit]

@Fae: , Hi Fae, I uploaded a new version of this file File:PeteLevin PhotogSamanthaLevin 2010.jpg on February 12. I downloaded the original image from Wikipedia, made it brighter and slightly sharper, then I uploaded it as the new version. Looking at the image page, the new brighter image looks exactly like the original darker image, what is wrong?
FYI, I am sure that I uploaded the correct version (a brighter and sharper version), and the file size of 36KB is correct. The image is also sitting in User:Fæ/BLP overwrites, I am not exactly sure what this page is, perhaps an approval queue!? Thanks, Bammesk (talk) 04:31, 13 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Looks brighter to me. Try purging your cache/refreshing the page. User:Fæ/BLP overwrites records overwrites of images of living people so that admins like myself and others monitoring it can respond quickly if an image is vandalized. Most of the overwrites, like yours, are fine, but we do get occasional vandalism. INeverCry 04:56, 13 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks :) Bammesk (talk) 04:59, 13 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank for creating this, Fae
