Maps data

[edit]
Map

Hi, I just saw you created Data:St_Georges_Terrace.map, thanks for testing it out! While I think it would be awesome to use .map pages for all sorts of things, I don't think we should put streets and other geographical objects there because they are already available to us via the "geoline" and "geoshape" service in Kartographer - straight from the OSM database. I just added the wikidata id to the St Georges Terrace in OSM, so the map on the right should start working within 24 hours. I also wrote this guide on how to add Wikidata IDs to OSM if they are missing. Lastly, I think the best use of the .map is to add non-OSM style data, such as suspect attack positions from the Ukrainian war of 2014, or the Endangered habitat for Plethodon neomexicanus. Lastly, please make sure the data is CC0 (OSM is not), and specify the source of the data. Thanks! --Yurik (talk) 09:47, 23 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Source added; and replied at w:WT:USRD - Evad37 [talk] 22:58, 23 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Evad, sorry didn't see your comment before moving it to Data:Sandbox/Evad37/St Georges Terrace.map. I think we should move it to some more appropriate name - all pages so far were prefixed by their origin, e.g. Data:Naturalearthdata.com/US states.map. Should we prefix it with "self/", or "own"? In any case, do we want to keep your page in Data, if you can get it via the Q7593251 id? (the data has already made it to our servers, once the cache expires, it will show up automatically). It would be awesome if you made the lines for the historical highways that are not in OSM - those might make a much better demo. Again, thanks for doing this! --Yurik (talk) 04:28, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Yurik: I can see the line showing up in the map at the right here, but it's only highlighting the part of the road, between Elder Street and William Street. The remaining section between William Street and Victoria Avenue should also be included. Any ideas why this happened / how to fix it? Having roads chopped up into arbitrary sections which need to be individually linked to Wikidata would be really unappealing, especially for long roads like Great Eastern Highway or Great Northern Highway. With regards to naming, either "Self/" or "Own/" would seem an appropriate choice. Once the OSM geoline stuff gets sorted out, I guess my Data: page could be deleted (but until then I'd like to hang on to it − where it is at the moment, in Sandbox/, is fine). - Evad37 [talk] 09:07, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Evad, heh, took it long enough :(. I hope it will get shorter soon. As for the data - it seems I edited it incorrectly. I edited this "way" object in OSM because that's what the search found, but I should have looked closer - I only tagged one portion of the road, and only one side. I looked, and it seems there is no "route relation" (see also how to map) that joins multiple segments of that road, nor is there a route master relation that joins both directions. My guess is that we would need to create them, remove the wikidata and wikipedia tags on the way and add them to the relations. Also, I am not sure if we currently can handle the wikidata tag on the "master" relation, but we can process the regular relation tags, so we probably should add wikipedia/wikidata tags to both (each way) directions. Which means my initial OSM editing guide needs to be expanded to explain how to find relations more easily, and give links to OSM editing. Sadly, roads are not as straightforward at times as one would hope. --Yurik (talk) 18:53, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Evad, apparently, editing relations are not really supported from the web based (ID) editor, but JOSM, the primary editor for OSMers, has very extensive support. Here's the video of how to work with the road relations. Let me know if you run into any problems. Btw, you can now use your Wiki account to log in into OSM! (see my guide link above). --Yurik (talk) 19:03, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Evad, ah! and another good news - the Potlatch 2, the Flash-based in browser editor (click Edit's drop down button), also supports relations, but doesn't have road relation presets, so you would have to set those tags by hand. Use ctrl+click to select all the needed ways (probably one way only), and add them to a new relation, and add all the tags described in the wiki for a route relation. --Yurik (talk) 19:08, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

[edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

File:Nappe Wikimédia France (cropped).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
