Is there a reason for the continued existence of Category:Uploaded by King's College? - Jmabel ! talk 22:12, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Jmabel, thanks for checking in. This category can be deleted, it was created in a training and replaced by a different category at a later date. EriedgenArc (talk) 15:42, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I was informed you copied a picture I took. I took it in Berlin in the Gemäldegalerie, with a local catalogue number 525 G, and I put in a relevant category when publishing it, i.e. Category:Baudouin de Lannoy by Jan van Eyck. The category is put into many others, but at least rightly in Category:15th-century portrait paintings in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. Yet, when I checked several of the pictures in that category, some by other uploaders that I know to be very precise, who also put it in Berlin, there is, all of a sudden, you who is putting them in the category “Museum of Fine Arts, Ghent“. First of all I wanted to know what you thought you were doing. In my mind you made a mess. For putting Berlin pictures in a museum in Belgium, as well as putting them in the most general category you could find, where they then were amidst 2170 paintings, not sorted as for painter, period or whatever. After study of the attributions in the right category I found the picture has been in Ghent during an exhibition in 2020, “Van Eyck. An Optical Revolution“. If you had put it in a subcategory dedicated to that exhibition it might be alright. I corrected your mistake. Then I was flabbergasted: Someone had been wise enough to create a sub-gallery for that picture in the Category:Van Eyck. An Optical Revolution, but you copied one of the pictures to the most general of categories, that of the whole museum. And then you copied the other pictures there also. It is a principle that if an item is in a sub-category it should not be put in a more general one, let alone the top one. If that were to happen the collections of museums all over the world would be enriched enormously, there being so many works on loan at any given moment. But looking at a collection would take days. Let this be a lesson: seek a proper location if you start copying pictures from their rightful place. Or else, leave them alone. If you did this with other pictures at that exhibition, you’d better start correcting.Dosseman (talk) 18:24, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, thanks for getting in touch. I am working on an Open GLAM project that involves some work with Cat-a-Lot to improve metrics methodologies for organisations that have openly licensed images. The Museum of Fine Arts is one such organisation. Your image was one that was erroneously categorised today. I see that this has now been corrected.
Your tone and approach are hostile and unpleasant, going against the good faith policy of the Wikimedia community. I am a GLAM professional with Wiki experience: this was an honest error. Your approach to this matter, and your choice to be so hostile, are not something I would have expected from this community.
'You'd better start correcting' is threatening, and borders on harassment. Please take a moment to think about how this might impact other editors.
The mistake has now been rectified. I consider this matter closed. EriedgenArc (talk) 18:44, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you all move image from the Ghent Museum? Now there are double catergories everywhere? The main catergory should be empty, and the images divided into the underlying structure? Did you consult with anyone about this? Carolus (talk) 06:22, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Carolus. This was an error and will be corrected this morning. My apologies for the inconvenience in the meantime. Happy to talk off-Wiki for further context. EriedgenArc (talk) 06:46, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thank you. Apologies for my late response. I will await further correction then, regards. Carolus (talk) 15:40, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Carolus, all should be sorted now with the main category empty. EriedgenArc (talk) 12:21, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect, Thanks for your update. Carolus (talk) 16:03, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
