Hi Epicgenius, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited User:Epicgenius/common.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 1 new jshint issue — the page's status is now having warnings. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!
  1. ISSUE: line 6 character 91: Script URL. - Evidence: mw.util.addPortletLink('p-tb', 'javascript:importScript("MediaWiki:VisualFileChange.js");', 'Perform batch task', 't-AjaxQuickDeleteOnDemand');

WTC PATH station

Hello Epicgenius,

I am wondering why you merged the categories I had created for different entrances of the WTC PATH station. I believe you have a reason, but I should like you to share it with me. Thanks in advance. Vcohen (talk) 08:07, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

@Vcohen: I merged the three categories so that images of the entrance would be easier to manage, and additionally, pictures of the entrance from other years could also be placed in the category. I apologize if it's inconvenient. Epic Genius (talk) 03:35, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
OK, thanks. Vcohen (talk) 04:17, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Welcome, Dear Patroller!

Counter Vandalism Unit

Hi Epicgenius,

You now have the Patroller right and may call yourself a patroller! Please take a moment to read the updated Commons:Patrol to learn how Patrolling works and how we use it to fight vandalism.

As you know already, the patrolling functionality is enabled for all edits, not just for new-page creations. This enables us to keep track of, for example, edits made by anonymous users here on Commons.

We could use your help at the Counter Vandalism Unit. For example by patrolling an Anonymous-edits checklist and checking a day-part.

If you have any questions please leave a message on the CVU talkpage or ask for help on IRC in #wikimedia-commons. Jianhui67 talkcontribs 08:04, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

@Doorknob747: Don't know, never tried it before. There's a website for this, though: www.zamzar.com/convert/mp4-to-ogg/. Epic Genius (talk) 02:07, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
@Epicgenius: Mp4 1 min video is 500MB that's how high res it is! site takes up to 100MB only!Doorknob 747 (talk) 02:41, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

@Epicgenius: How does my uploads look?Doorknob 747 (talk) 00:57, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
@Doorknob747: To be honest, I think you can take better pictures, but the uploads themselves are fine. Epic Genius (talk) 10:58, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
@Epicgenius: These images were taken at full res with a 20 Megapixel (Nokia Lumia Icon) camera. You have a Nokia Lumia 1020 ( 40 Megapixel camera)  ?Doorknob 747 (talk) 20:16, 17 April 2015 (UTC)

@Doorknob747: The panorama of the R46 will be wider. So, I don't know. You can definitely try. Epic Genius (talk) 20:59, 17 April 2015 (UTC)
@Epicgenius: Easier than you can think. Doorknob 747 (talk) 21:01, 17 April 2015 (UTC)

This isn't Wikipedia... Epic Genius (talk) 16:47, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi, why do you think that the former filename could have caused confusion? Please note that our file renaming criteria have changed and files should no longer be renamed just because they could be "misleading".    FDMS  4    21:21, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

@FDMS4: There is also File:Woolworth Building.JPG, which has the exact same spelling without caps. And File:Woolworth building.jpg as well. Uncapitalized, the names are spelled the same. The date is a disambiguator. Epic Genius (talk) 21:23, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Aerial photographs of New York City

I see you've been splitting up the boroughs for the Aerial photographs of New York City category. I just created one for The Bronx. You can fill that up. Also I tried to add categories to the Queens cat when I got an edit conflict warning. If you got that too, I apologize. ----DanTD (talk) 21:55, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

@DanTD: I'm going to fill that new Bronx category up right now if I can. Epic Genius (talk) 21:57, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

NYC Subway stations in Manhattan

I see that you've also split off some of the Subway stations into a midtown category. Are you considering other sections of Manhattan? ----DanTD (talk) 10:47, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

@DanTD: Yes. I am planning 59th to 125th Streets; 34th to Houston Streets, below Houston Street, and above 125th Street categories. Epic Genius (talk) 12:20, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

Hyphen

Please do not use in category names symbols which cannot be easily typed from a standard keyboard, such as the various non-hyphen short horizontal lines. Doing so is an inconvenience to our users. I have just laboriously reverted your changes making "Waldorf-Astoria" into something that can't be typed from an English-language keyboard. Please don't do this again. Use a hyphen. Beyond My Ken (talk) 23:03, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

Also, please don't "correct" category names on the basis of "grammar". A category name is not a sentence and the rules of grammar don't apply.

I think you should take a break, you're making more and more mistakes. Beyond My Ken (talk) 23:07, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Beyond My Ken: {{Endashcatredirect}}. Note that many caracters cannot easily be typed from a Windows English language keyboard, including all letters that aren't part of the English alphabet (surprise!).    FDMS  4    00:20, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
Correct, but people typing languages other than English are presumably using non-English keyboards which will type those characters. This is different from the hyphen/non-hyphen thing. Someone looking for the Waldorf-Astoria is going to type in the search box "Waldorf[hyphen]Astoria", and they should be able to do so without being required to figure out a way to type in "Waldorf[ndash]Astoria" or "Waldorf[mdash]Astoria". We're here to serve our users, not to make things harder for them.

Also, I'll point out the perhaps politically-incorrect fact that English is the default language for Commons. Beyond My Ken (talk) 01:00, 23 April 2015 (UTC)

@Beyond My Ken and FDMS4: Sorry about that. Also, please note that the Waldorf-Astoria category has had an endash for several months now. Epic Genius (talk) 01:05, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
Also, I was under the impression that typing the name with the hyphen yielded the name with the endashes in HotCat and Special:Search, which does occur. Typing an endash does not only yield titles with endashes. Epic Genius (talk) 01:06, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
@Beyond My Ken: Utter nonsense, if you categorise files by location (municipality/village/…), you will find thousands of correctly named categories containing non-English letters, simply because their names haven't been translated to English, and we're not here to serve our users wrong names. (As for Waldorf Astoria, their official name doesn't appear to contain any punctuation …) For easier-to-type variants, {{Catredirect}}s can be created. Re "politically incorrect", I'm one of the AFAIK very few users here who thinks that it was a huge mistake to declare this project multilingual.    FDMS  4    19:17, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
@BMK: These categories can be shortened, though, like "301 Park Avenue Waldorf-Astoria" can be shortened to "301 Park Avenue". Also, I made these mistakes inadvertently. I apologize; I did not know that these actions were against practice, so I will not do it again. Epic Genius (talk) 01:10, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
Using endashes and other difficult-to-type-on-Windows typography is very much common practice here, please ignore BMK's comment.    FDMS  4    19:17, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
Now I'm really confused, but for the sake of not making another error, I'll stop moving pages solely on the basis of endashes. Epic Genius (talk) 20:34, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
I'd advise you to ignore FDMS4's advice, since he's only been here less than a year and a half and may not have a good handle on what's appropriate to assist our readers and what is not. Beyond My Ken (talk) 01:29, 24 April 2015 (UTC)

OK.Doorknob 747 (talk) 15:05, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

Will you please stop screwing around with categories?

"Auditorium Building" is much too generic a description, and you've screwed it up in some way that I can't undo your damage. Just stop, your judgment in this matters is extremely poor. Beyond My Ken (talk) 20:31, 29 May 2015 (UTC)

@Beyond My Ken: It's a proper name. If it is the only thing with a Commons category that uses the name, I don't see anything wrong with using the proper name without a disambiguator. Right now, I don't see any other "Auditorium Buildings" out there. Epic Genius (talk) 20:40, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
Also, don't we have Template:Category redirect? There is nothing at COM:CAT that suggests that there must be a disambiguator in the name, so the cat redirect template works just fine. Epic Genius (talk) 20:47, 29 May 2015 (UTC)

Three different categories

Nathan’s famous

I recategorized Nathan’s Famous as specified in August 2013 to differentiate between the different locations in Coney Island. If you have any recommendations, please take it to the talk page. Semper Fi! FieldMarine (talk) 09:17, 2 June 2015 (UTC)

Category:Benihana restaurant (Manhattan, New York)

I readded this cat that was emptied and subsequently deleted. If you have any comment, please take it to the talk page. I believe it important to keep the format (Manhattan, New York) to identify this spefic restaurant. Thank you. Semper Fi! FieldMarine (talk) 11:10, 2 June 2015 (UTC)

Category:Landmark Tavern (Manhattan, New York)

I readded this cat that was emptied and subsequently deleted. If you have any comment, please take it to the talk page. Additionally, I believe it important to keep the format (Manhattan, New York) to identify this spefic restaurant. Thank you. Semper Fi! FieldMarine (talk) 11:32, 2 June 2015 (UTC)

Discussion

@FieldMarine: I have insufficient time to copy my comments to the talk page, so I will reply here. There are only 2 images each in Category:Landmark Tavern (Manhattan, New York) and Category:Benihana restaurant (Manhattan, New York). The Nathan's Famous restaurants are basically two branches, one block away, of the same chain, so it is understandable to un-merge them; however, since these branches are so close together and, as I erroneously thought at the time, basically connected, I categorized them as one. Epic Genius (talk) 14:27, 2 June 2015 (UTC)

I do plan on uploading more to each in the future, and I suspect more will be added over time by others as well. I see no issue with having cats with a few files as it provides better organization and clarity, and placeholders for future growth. In the case of Nathans, I believe not separating the two may have the potential for being confusing, as one may confuse files relating to the the satellite branch with the main one. Semper Fi! FieldMarine (talk) 16:59, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
So I guess I'll not merge categories with only two files from now on, or two similar categories about nonetheless different things. Thanks for the explanation. Epic Genius (talk) 03:00, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
Thank you. Semper Fi! FieldMarine (talk) 10:50, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
No problem. Epic Genius (talk) 13:03, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

Overcategorization of images in Category:Governors Island

Take a look at Category:Ferries. There are about 60 images, your June uploads, that belong in Category:Governors Island but are also in a whole bunch of unrelated cats. See [1]. This sort of mess is a lot easier to avoid making than it is to clean up afterwards. 8-( Andy Dingley (talk) 18:02, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

@Andy Dingley: Apologies. I should probably remove the categories from these uploads. Epic Genius (talk) 22:43, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Skylines

Here and elsewhere, why are you adding Category:Manhattan skylines to files that already have the more specific Category:Midtown Manhattan skylines? - Jmabel ! talk 05:46, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Or similarly this, which is not in any meaningful sense a skyline: if this is a skyline, so is every picture that shows two buildings and extends to the top of the building. - Jmabel ! talk 05:48, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

@Jmabel: I may have overcategorized a little; sorry about that. Is Category:Manhattan skylines a diffusing category (files are not included in the category if already in the subcategory) or a non-diffusing category (file is in both parent and child categories)? Epic Genius (talk) 22:42, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
It's a diffusing category. Virtually all categories are except for user categories and a handful of technical categories like Category:Black and white photographs (where we don't want to duplicate 90% of the category hierarchy under it, and we would do exactly that if we diffused it). - Jmabel ! talk 06:19, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
OK, thanks. Epic Genius (talk) 15:12, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Hello and happy holidays

Hey there, EpicGenius. Sorry I haven't responded back to you before, because I've been very busy with trade school so far these days. But thankfully, I'm getting a week off starting on Christmas Day, so I might as well start railfanning and getting a few shots or so. How's things going for you and Kew Gardens aka Union Tpke? I didn't even bother to look on Wikipedia these days all thanks to Cyphoidbomb and Swarm. I still hate them with a passion for permanently blocking me. But anyways, at NYCT Forums, the admins took away my ability to send priviate messages to people after a huge dispute I had with another member on the forums. But I'm overall good though. If both you and Kew Gardens aka Union Tpke want to contact me, just message me on my talk page at Commons. Thanks and happy holidays. I'll get back to you later. I also plan on contacting Swarm via email beginning April 2016 or May 2016. Until then, I might as well just get used to my account being blocked and the fact that I can't even dare try to edit Wikipedia from my IP address. JoesphBarbaro (talk) 21:18, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

@JoesphBarbaro: A belated happy holidays to you, too. Things here are going well, and there's not a lot of activity nowadays, except for the three or four normal registered editors and some random IPs. Sorry I couldn't reply sooner; I was on wikibreak and had limited access to Wikipedia, let alone to Commons. Until then, if you make good contributions to Commons and other projects, I guess you can ask for a "standard offer" by the middle of next year. Epic Genius (talk) 22:52, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

Station renaming

You have moved the very generic Category:Cleburne station to a specific Category:Cleburne Intermodal Transportation Depot when most of the files are not of that facility. Why would you do that? Secondarywaltz (talk) 17:34, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

@Secondarywaltz: It was to align the category with the wiki page. I moved the wiki page because that was its full title. If other photos of the depot are added, this category is future-proofed. Epic Genius (talk) 20:01, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
