Redirecting categories

When redirecting categories on Commons it's best to use "{{category redirect}}" rather than plain old redirect. With "category redirect", when using HotCat to add categories, a redirected category will automatically be updated to the bew category, which will not happen if one uses plain-old redirect. You can see the syntax here. Beyond My Ken (talk) 18:02, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Okay, thanks. Epicgenius (talk) 18:03, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

I [https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Edgar_Laing_Stores&diff=143325619&oldid=143237769 partly undid your recent changes. I think my edit summary should explain why, but if you disagree, let's discuss here. - Jmabel ! talk 20:45, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Oops, my mistake. I thought the Seaport was the only location. Apologies. Epicgenius (talk) 02:55, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
No problem. Sometimes you need us old guys to remember where things used be. - Jmabel ! talk 09:27, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
File:North Hollywood (LACMTA station) article screenshot.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thank you for uploading images from Wikipedia to Commons. However, the file you uploaded, File:Los Angeles Metro, Hollywood-Higland, Upper Floor View.jpg appears to be a scaled down version of the version on Wikipedia. Please reupload the full version of the image. You can then tag the scaled down version with {{duplicate}} to have it deleted. Consider using CommonsHelper to provide the correct image description and licensing tags. Thank you,

Hello!

Thank you for uploading File:Los Angeles Metro, Hollywood-Higland, Upper Floor View.jpg to the Wikimedia Commons. I noticed that when you uploaded from another Wikimedia project, you left out some important information, or copied it incorrectly. In the future, please consider using CommonsHelper, a tool which automates the process of moving files over. Thank you,

Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:09, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

Hello. I still see you're transferring images without the correct licensing information. Please consider CommonsHelper. If you need help, let me know. Thanks. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:16, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
@Magog the Ogre: I'm not sure if CommonsHelper works on Mac, but if so, I can download it. Epicgenius (talk) 01:28, 6 February 2015 (UTC) So it's a webpage. OK, I'll start using it. Thanks. It's a lot easier than just downloading the files and then uploading them. Epicgenius (talk) 01:29, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

Category:Massachusetts Avenue (metropolitan Boston)

This sort of significant change needs discussion -- it cannot be done unilaterally. It is certainly true that Mass Ave extends a long way west of Boston, but that does not mean that those images of places on it in Boston proper should not have a category..     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 11:05, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

@Jameslwoodward: I apologize if I didn't notice it. Maybe a subcategory covering its route in Boston can be made. Epicgenius (talk) 02:00, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

2013 Fairfield Train Crash vs. others

This image proves that other train crashes have happened in Fairfield before.

Don't be so sure about the 2013 Fairfield Train Crash not being ambiguous. ----DanTD (talk) 04:53, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

Huh, I didn't know about that before. Probably because it happened nearly 114 years ago. Epicgenius (talk) 13:15, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
Yes, well there were quite a few big ones along the original New Haven Main Line in the 19th and 20th Centuries. ----DanTD (talk) 13:58, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
All these crashes make this 2013 crash look safe. We should probably get a Wikipedia article going about that. Epicgenius (talk) 14:14, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
If we can't, at least we can put them in the lists of railroad accidents by time periods; pre-1880's, 1880-1899, 1900-1929, or what have you. ----DanTD (talk) 14:24, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
Sounds good. Epicgenius (talk) 14:25, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi Epicgenius, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Thanks! Epic Genius (talk) 16:41, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Slow down, please

You're making mistakes. Baruch College is in Gramercy Park and Kips Bay, depending on whether the building is north or south of 23rd street. It is not in Rose Hill. Please be more careful. Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:48, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

You also made some errors regarding the categories "Union Square, Manhattan" and "Union Square neighborhood". Anything actually on the square goes in the first cat -- so that's everything in the park, on Union Square East and West, on 14th Street between 4th Avenue and University Place, and on 17th Street between Broadway and Park Avenue South. Everything else in the vicinity goes in the "neighborhood" cat. Beyond My Ken (talk) 22:09, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
On the other hand it's pleasant to see vigor being applied to category diffusion, even with a few errors. Better yet, if it were more applied to oversized categories such as those for Manhattan or New York, and less to pictures whose current categorizations are already pretty near adequate. Jim.henderson (talk) 22:23, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
I apologize for my mistake. I confused files taken directly around the square, categorized in Category:Union Square, Manhattan, for being in the neighborhood, categorized in Category:Union Square neighborhood. As for Baruch being in the Kips Bay/Gramercy neighborhoods, I thought the categories in the files were redundant to those in the main category. Anyway, I'll not make these mistakes again. I should probably recategorize some overcategorized files instead. Epic Genius (talk) 14:24, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
That's the way. One could quickly recat a great batch of files from, to take a non existent example, Flatbush, New York City to Flatbush, Brooklyn. That would be a quick way to neaten, while making little difference to helping anyone find them. Diffusing Brooklyn pictures to Flatbush or Fort Greene or Greenpoint, or to Brooklyn's history or schools or office buildings or sports or politicians, or several of the above, may take more thought, thus more time. It also makes more findable both the moved pictures and the not yet moved ones.
Cool. Thank you for the advice. Epic Genius (talk) 17:33, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi Epicgenius! I see you've recently got the filemover bit and you are enthusiastic to try it out. Good! But you don't need to type in "Category:Media re....", I have devised a simple script that adds a relevant link under the toolbox. Click on it and you find the category. Hope this will help you (although typing ain't that bad, it's because we all are partially lazy). Put this in your skin.js: importScript('User:Ethically Yours/filemover.js'); Ethically Yours (talk) 09:04, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

@Ethically Yours: Thanks! I will try it in my skin's .js page. Epic Genius (talk) 23:11, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

"Unidentified locations"

[1]: what sort of location would be identified here? Seems like an inappropriate category. Yes, it belongs in some subcat of Category:New York City, but I don't think it's a matter of location. There are quite a few of the others you moved where similar issues apply, you might want to look through these. - Jmabel ! talk 00:23, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the notification. That's a hard one. Since this is infrastructure that is mail-related, I used Category:Post offices in New York City, since the category for NYC infrastructure doesn't exist. Epic Genius (talk) 16:01, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

"Streetscape"

Wiktionary says that a streetscape is "The visual elements of a street, including the road, adjoining buildings, sidewalks, street furniture, trees and open spaces, etc, that combine to form the street's character.". Given this, I don't believe that images of a single building should be categorized in the streetscape cats, even if part of the street is seen, nor images of single vehicles if the focus is obviously the vehicle and insignificant portions of the street are shown. Rows of multiple buildings would seem to apply, and would images of street furniture etc. Beyond My Ken (talk) 11:58, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for clarifying. So basically, images of a single building can be categorized in buildings instead of in streetscapes. Got it. Epic Genius (talk) 15:58, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
