Problem on pt.wikibooks - can you help?

[edit]

Hello Dschwen,

I was wondering if you could help us. On pt.wikibooks, they're trying to have edit tools similar to the ones we use here (I guess there will be different buttons, they don't need a "gallery" button there ;)). However, apparently there are different sections that are not working with Firefox 3 and they're not sure if they have to change something on the edittools.js or the common.js. Is it possible, if you have the time, to have a look at it and check what might be the problem?

It was User:Helder.wiki who reported this to me, but he is en-1, so if you have to talk to someone, I'd say Jorge Morais would be the best contact person (he's en-3 and a local sysop). I'm going to be away for several days now, so I won't be able to help much :(.

Thank you, and sorry for disturbing you with this. Patrícia msg 21:38, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I left Jorge a message. The same bug recently broke th Javascript of the icelandic wikipedia. --Dschwen (talk) 02:20, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! :) Patrícia msg 07:17, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pike Toll Spot Troll

[edit]

To the right of the flag halfway down the pole -- making me, I guess, the Pike Toll Pole Spot Troll. Yike! -- carol (talk) 02:54, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, you're a doll, the Pike Toll Pole Spot Doll! Fixed it. --Dschwen (talk) 03:08, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, depending on the definition, I might have been trolling though.... -- carol (talk) 04:46, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Quality Image Promotion

[edit]
Your image has been reviewed and promoted

Congratulations! NYC Main St Flushing station 3.jpg, which was produced by you, was reviewed and has now been promoted to Quality Image status.

If you would like to nominate another image, please do so at Quality images candidates.

We also invite you to take part in the categorization of recently promoted quality images.
Comments  Comment Very good quality otherwise but too tight crop and needs perspective correction; imho doesn't give the best possible picture of the surroundings of the entrance. --Dilaudid 17:28, 23 June 2008 (UTC), Do you know that place? --Dschwen 19:22, 27 June 2008 (UTC) Nope. All I'm saying is that looking at the picture I couldn't tell what the environment was like. Maybe it's not a biggie. --Dilaudid 07:13, 29 June 2008 (UTC) good perspective and composition. I can see that is depicted the peoples coming and going on the street (breathing of street). Very nice. _Fukutaro 13:55, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

VICbot

[edit]

Hi, Daniel. May I please ask you, if VICbot suppose to post VI promotion message to the talk page of an author of an image and not only to the talk page of a nominator of an image? Thank you for your time.--Mbz1 (talk) 02:42, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Mila. Finding the author is a non trivial task (I could use the uploader for now). Iĺl try that after I've taken care of MVR (I'm a little busy right now). --Dschwen (talk) 14:32, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FP promotion

[edit]
This image has been promoted to Featured picture!

The image Image:Staten Island Ferry terminal.jpg, that you nominated on Commons:Featured picture candidates/Image:Staten Island Ferry terminal.jpg has been promoted. Thank you for your contribution. If you would like to nominate another image, please do so.

Help at pt.wikibooks

[edit]

Hi Dschwen, sorry for the late response I was a little busy these days. I finally added the code to the Common.js at pt.wikibooks, but it seems that it did not worked. I added it in the same place it is in the is.wikipedia. Should I copy any code from here? It is odd that the edittools works here since it should be the same code there — or that was the original intention... Thank you in advance. - Jorge Morais (talk) 22:01, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The purpose of the modification is to avoid calling document.attachEvent() on browsers that do not support it. If you double check where you placed the && typeof(document.attachEvent) != "undefined" test you'll see that the corresponding if clause does not surround the document.attachEvent() call. That means you modification was ineffective. Now that I look at the is.wp code again, I can see that they didn't follow my suggestion either, but instead used if (navigator.appName == "Microsoft Internet Explorer") which is terrible JS style (but works). Change
if (window.showModalDialog && document.compatMode && document.compatMode == "CSS1Compat")

to

if (window.showModalDialog && document.compatMode && document.compatMode == "CSS1Compat" && typeof(document.attachEvent) != "undefined")

And undo your previous change. That should help. --Dschwen (talk) 22:25, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Now it is working again! But it seems that the menu is not working at Internet Explorer either the "force IP preview" or the edittools at Firefox. Maybe some more code conflict? Sorry, I understand very little about programming. I do not know if it is your "departament" but any help with this would also be great.
You may write here. I will check it. - Jorge Morais (talk) 22:51, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. More bugs left. The function addEvent is undefined on pt.wb. Either you replace all occurences of addEvent in Mediawiki:Edittools.js with addHandler, or you add
var addEvent = addHandler;
in Mediawiki:Common.js (that way makes it easier to copy new versions of edittools should they get updated. P.S.: You might as well give me the sysop bit on pt.wb, that would make things a bit more efficient ;-) --Dschwen (talk) 22:58, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And are there this much bugs left? Wow. I will see what others think about. Well, thank you again. - Jorge Morais (talk) 23:14, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

... is not in my book as being helpful. Especially in view of recent developments. It is something Richard should have done, and not someone else disguising his username. The correct way would've been to leave a message on his talk page. E.g. -- Lycaon (talk) 13:37, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I did indeed notify Richard. Let's not make something big out of this, carol could use a little break. I'm sure she has nothing but respect for Richard (as far as I can tell from recent postings) and the Monster Truck pipe was just a friendly joke. Since it won't confuse the bot and since we should judge images and not usernames in any case I didn't think it would be a big issue. --Dschwen (talk) 15:22, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you say so :|. Lycaon (talk) 16:41, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And a two other times precedent for it and using Richards own words. And, have you noticed how Lycaon signs his name like WayneRay when answering questions at the help desk? Given the personal images uploaded here of WayneRay and of Richard Bartz, is it only funny to me that one would be protecting the other? Thanks Dschwen, for not being part of an imaginary problem. -- carol (talk) 16:23, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Frosty images

[edit]

Hi, I'm sorry to bother you but I need to know if the frosty images (like this) you have uploaded to Commons were taken in misty/foggy weather or during a cold, sunny morning in order to categorize them correctly. It would be nice also to know the exact location of Lower Saxony. Regards--Carnby (talk) 13:41, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ooops. Forgot to answer this. They were taken on a cold winter morning (around last christmas) close to Neustadt am Ruebenberge, it was foggy at first, and then cleared up. I'll geocode them in a minute. --Dschwen (talk) 15:19, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Anyway, if there was freezing fog, they should be renamed rime rather than hoarfrost, since this one forms from the deposition of water vapour and not the solidification of supercooled fog droplets. For reference, look at this, this and this article. Good images, though. Is there a way to rename them? Best regards.--Carnby (talk) 17:59, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, good point. I was looking for similar pictures, and rime and hoarfrost both translate to the german word Raureif. But you are most likely right, I suppose the pictures do show Soft rime. I'll categorize them as Category:Rime, and tell siebot to rename them. --Dschwen (talk) 19:52, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your bot

[edit]

Hi, Daniel. May I please see the source code for your QICbot bot? I'd like to learn something about writing the bots and the easiest way for me to learn is to see a sample. Thank you for you time.--Mbz1 (talk) 01:41, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, have you checked User:QICbot, there is a link to the source. --Dschwen (talk) 02:19, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi, Daniel. I know you're busy and I'm sorry to bother you all the time. I've never done Internet programming and of course I do not know Python. So I might have quite a few questions. If you have no time to answer them, please feel absolutely free to tell me to stop bothering you. Anyway, here's my first question: Let's say I wrote some code and it is read only. In other words there's nowhere in the code the statement : "page.put" and no contest of any page is changed. I wonder, if I could debug this on the real Commons pages to see how it is working, and what should I do to implement this debug run. Thank you for your time.--Mbz1 (talk) 14:05, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • if it is read only (and doesn't put too much strain on the servers (by reading hundreds or thousands of pages)) there should be no problem testing it under your username. I use simple print statements to output the individual modifications or new modified pages (I believe you can still see some commented out in the bot source). What kind of bot are you writing? --Dschwen (talk) 14:24, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm thinking about the bot, which would count votes for FPC and add result: template to the nominations. Eventually it might be extentened to close FPC nominations, but I believe even counting votes and adding result: template would be helpful.May I please ask you what do you think about this? Thank you.--Mbz1 (talk) 14:42, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The bot

[edit]

Heh, I see it is being mined (probably) for its gallery making abilities. I am curious if the suggestion I made will be delayed until after the current miners have installed this version.

The bot does not yet know how to manage QICCR or QICR or "those other image reviews" which end in a draw?

Also, the speed limit sign is kind of nifty! -- carol (talk) 03:16, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Additionally, I like how it makes galleries without removing categories. This seems to be a process that is beyond some human users, yet simple for software. -- carol (talk) 03:17, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hehe, you are referring to the TOL project? :-) I've clashed with them as well on some minor incidences. But I've come to peace with their policy. My biggest motivation for categorization would be category intersections as an image search option. But I believe that a cleverly written category intersection mechanism can take galleries into account as well. Just as it will be able to coarsen the categories and for example make images from Mueseums in Illinois appear in an intersection search of Museum and USA. It might be fun to write such a gadget. And if they ever change their mind I think it will be fairly easy to write a bot that will recategorize all those images that are only present in galleries. Bottom line: I think it is not worth fussing about this right now, as this issue can and most likely will be easily resolved some time in the future. --Dschwen (talk) 14:31, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
P.S.: Wikilegal disclamer for the diff-posting kind: I'm am not suggesting/announcing/threatening to write a bot that will forcefully against community consensus recategorize the TOL images. Leave me out of this annoying discussion. --Dschwen (talk) 14:31, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I got "sucked" into the discussion, in a manner of speaking and I am sorry about mentioning it here. It is on my mind though. The real question was about the QI images which sink into CR and end where the vote is even after 8 days. I make the outline blue to discourage voting. The bot doesn't touch them does it? -- carol (talk) 14:43, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome and thanks. -- carol (talk) 04:26, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ha! I just figured out by myself what you meant, and then I read your explanation :-). You are right. I'll add this function to the bot. Blue CR entries will be removed from the page as well. But it is up to the human vote counter to make sure that the entrie isn't made blue prior to the 8 day limit. --Dschwen (talk) 17:27, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A need for what you are offering is actually very close to being requested based on consenus(!) between TOL and the rest of Commons, see Commons talk:Categories vs Galleries, so you may be put to work before you had envisioned... I noticed you implemented some MVR support in VICbot. Nice! Appreciated! It works. -- Slaunger (talk) 14:38, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Correction: It almost works;-) -- Slaunger (talk) 14:39, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I forgot to empty a text variable :-). That bug is fixed already. --Dschwen (talk) 17:27, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

EXIF expert opinion needed

[edit]

It appears that the camera manufacturer information is not being assigned when it should and a regex variable is displaying see either of these recent images of mine (my ant farm):

The fact that the "$1" is being wikilinked to the page with that title is a humbling I am uncertain I am in need of as well....

Thoughts? Who to mention it to? Also, I would like to think that the missing dressing packet and bones is not a wiki problem. -- carol (talk) 04:26, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please tell me this is not your kitchen ;-). Where do you see a $1, it looks ok to me (Canon and Canon PowerShot S230). --Dschwen (talk) 12:31, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It started yesterday even for the images I've uploaded some time ago.. What is interesting that, when I look at the same image in Wikipedia it shows correct manufacture, but when I look at the image in Commons it shows $1--Mbz1 (talk) 12:49, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Dschwen, it does seem to be displaying correctly now, heh -- interesting regexp problem that. Not my kitchen although they were there! It was so easy to move them out to the porch though; I think that movie where the ants collect seeds is not exactly accurate about what ants like to eat. These are meat eaters. Not sweets or bread or coffee or fruit or vegetables -- things which are in my kitchen and need wiping up.
Mbz1: $1 is the first variable when a string is read. So the exif information, $1 = camera manufacturer, and $2 = Camera model, $3 = exposure time. This is very consistent across unix and kin also with an option to assign a real name, but it takes more and there are not as many already built tools to deal with that. This particular "bug" with the software here, it made me laugh and probably any old unix curmudgeon was laughing as well as the young and old linux shell script writers -- I am none of those, but it is always a good thing when that list of people is laughing.... -- carol (talk) 13:08, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yeah, nikon, sony, kodak, canon, etc. They would all have the same "value" assigned.... -- carol (talk) 13:11, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Whatever caused this issue in the first place, it was fixed here. --Dschwen (talk) 14:32, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Diff-i-cult TrOLs

[edit]

I have nothing more to say. -- carol (talk) 13:20, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think not related, but look at CR right now. There are all of those totals that have my user name with the talk also. That is when the javascript was not working. Then, all of a sudden, the javascript starts working and you can see the actual when in time via the timestamps and the missing talk from the regular signature.... -- carol (talk) 16:14, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Could this bug finally have been fixed?!
Maybe the devs are working on this and ran some tests? Who knows, I didn't get any updates form the bugzilla bugreport I submitted. --Dschwen (talk) 16:22, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why did the bot removed the section "Image:Dicentra-spectabilis.jpg" just a half day after the last entry? And why didn't the bot tagged it with the QI-label? 1 oppose and 2 promote should be QI or am I wrong? --Wuzur (talk) 13:42, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The reason is that I made a little typo while extending the QICbot. It was supposed to remove blue CR entries, but ended up removing yellow CR entries as well. Thanks for pointing this out to me! By the way, the bot does not count votes. That still is a job for humans. The bot only "looks at the border colors" of the entries. --Dschwen (talk) 14:00, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your fast help! --Wuzur (talk) 14:31, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Would you like to take a part in the discusson once again?

What I've done wrong?

[edit]

Hi, Daniel. I took your very good advise and created test nominations in my user page here. I've changed my code to work with this page and added put(text) statement. When the code was run I got message: "Changing page Commons:Featured picture candidates/Image:Sunrise mt ulugurutest.jpg", but in reality nothing was changed and there's nothing in the history.Thank you for your time.--Mbz1 (talk) 17:49, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

When your user does not have a bot-flag you'll have to solve a captcha at each edit (at least that's how it was a couple of weeks ago when I tested a new bot). You did use the login.py script and entered your userdata in user-config.py, right? --Dschwen (talk) 17:57, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I created new accunt for bot here. I did login.py script and entered my userdata in user-config.py. It knows, who I am, but my account has no bot flag. May I please ask you to explain to me what it does mean "to solve a captcha"? What exactly should I do? It never asked me to type anything. As I said it just says: "Changing page Commons:Featured picture candidates/Image:Sunrise mt ulugurutest.jpg" and does not change a thing. Thank you.--Mbz1 (talk) 00:51, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A captcha is an automated turing test, those squiggly word images where you have to type in what you see on the picture. Do you have the lates pywikipedia framework? What operating system are you using? On the toolserver (linux) when you run the bot on the commandline without the botflag it'll start w3m or lynx to let you download the captcha image and it will then prompt you for the solution. --Dschwen (talk) 02:03, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I did download the latest pywikipedia framework. I'm using windows XP. I wonder, if there's a way to add bot flag to my bot account before the aproval of the bot. I will test it only at my user page and, if the bot is not aproved, the flag and account could be deleted in few days. Thank you, and I am really sorry to bother you all the time.--Mbz1 (talk) 03:02, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Don be, I enjoy the orange bar every time. Unfortunately I cannot help you with the bot flag, only stewards or beurocrats can set those (not mere admins). But you could show me your code, and then I can either support your request or we could work on the code and then I support your request. --Dschwen (talk) 03:14, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It is not ready of course. Right now I do not check the dates because I wanted to test at bigger array of the nominations. I do not put the proper results yet and there are few other things that I was going to change. Of course it started as a play, so I did not give the variables proper names and I wrote very few commentaries. Anyway here it is. Thank you very much for offering your help. --Mbz1 (talk) 04:14, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Checking the template source each and every time seems wasteful, take a look at the marshal module, which allows you to save python hashes to the disk. Since the meaning of the voting templates is unlikely to ever change you'd have to query each template only once. --Dschwen (talk) 15:42, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'd like to thank you very much for taking your time to look at the code. I'd like to make sure I understood the first point right, please. Do I have to create a program with the marshal module, which runs only once and records templates to a disk and then reads the file from the disk in my bot? What disk is used for such situations?--Mbz1 (talk) 18:52, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • No, at the start of the script you initialize a hash from the cache file (using marshal), if the file does not exist make an empty hash ( templates = {} ). When you encounter a template during vote counting first look if a hash entry exists, if not query the template page and write the result (pro or con or neutral) to the hash. At the end of the script save the hash to a file (using marshal). --Dschwen (talk) 19:11, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Your check for double voting is faulty, it would prevent a vote by User:O after User:Obama has voted, and it would allow User:Dschwen and User:dschwen to vote both. Use a hash with the Username (first letter capitalized) as the key. --Dschwen (talk) 15:46, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've changed the code to convert all user names to upper case. Still I'm not sure I understood how my old code could have prevented a vote by User:O after User:Obama, if I'm checking for the whole name of a user and not only for the first letter.--Mbz1 (talk) 18:52, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

where i am now

[edit]

Hi, Daniel. I've changed the codetrying to avoid "find". I've changed the code that way that it gets to a template page only for the first found instance of a vote. I tried to use marshal module, but, it gives me an error that file name is wrong, when the program tries to write something in. I haven't figured out yet how to handle the time even after looking at your code. Now for me the best way scenario would have been, if you took it over from here and the bot would become your bot from now on. Otherwise I'm ready for your new suggestions.Thank you for your time.--Mbz1 (talk) 14:55, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Are you a species?

[edit]

Are you a species?

I saw a little diagram that simplified Linnean classification and armed with this new understanding of the system, I asked Lycaon if he had opposable thumbs. That got erased. Now I am watching the regulars here locate themselves via category. You are not native though.... -- carol (talk) 18:57, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Species? Maybe a freak of nature. One of the motivations was to find useres that can take pictures in certain regions of the world. Seemed useful for me, whether I'm native or not. Now what's missing is a nice gallery page with images of myself. Surely the reproductive organs must be visible to confirm my classification... --Dschwen (talk) 19:04, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"Freak of nature" is potentially a luxury phrase that exempts the person proclaiming this from many social expectations or even better yet the godawful profiling that I think I have had my fill of here in sunny CA. No, not my fill of -- over full of. I had a problem one time saying "he" and "him" when the person wanted to be called "she" or "her" but 1)the hands were wrong and my brain wasn't making gendered comments, 40+ of needing pronouns to make complete sentences has its downfalls and 2)the whole problem was because that person was not good at accepting compliments (and the compliment was not about choice of clothing or femininity either). About 20 years later, it occurred to me that one of the women who I did not like the way she was expressing femininity was a cross-dresser. Interestingly, figuring that out did not change my opinion. Your photograph on your web site was enough for me along with your insistance of being a "him". Please, show your photographs that have proof to someone who needs that kind of confirmation.
In summary: eek! No thanks. What I miss very very much for understanding people is birthdays and my books for that. Long before gender is lied about online, I think birthdays are. -- carol (talk) 19:44, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That executive summary is rather hurtful. Well, I guess my wife wouldn't have let me go forward with that plan in any case. In her top ten list of possible divorce reasons Wikipedia has the uncontested No. 1. spot (and actually it is just a top one list :-) ). --Dschwen (talk) 21:14, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I would have thought that my thinking that Mbz1 was writing the QICBot script was more hurtful. If I were to suggest that you were still living with your parents would that be hurtful? The insistence on no personality online/or at any of the wiki is usually not from you (that I know of) and interestingly enough, that insistence itself tends to start assigning a personality.
It is actually more interesting for me to think about what nearly 20 years of delivering extra oxygen to my eyes has done for them. Oh, and despise California that much more for the last year plus. -- carol (talk) 22:02, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How close?

[edit]

How close is Mbz1's problem with that script to my problem with not figuring out that software had been dumping the images into CR?

I think close. There is nothing in my lifetime that is as dull as these last five years; it is my only defense in this situation. Also, I don't know which is more at fault; me, the situation at home which put me here or the situation that I found here. -- carol (talk) 20:14, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Error in QIBot?

[edit]

Hello, would you please look at the lower end of Quality images candidates/candidate list. I think the oldest entry, from 3 July 2008 must have been handled from the bot, there would be something wrong with this entry. --Berthold Werner (talk) 11:41, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed this yesterday and it should be handled today. There was a stray space after the template name and the first |-symbol. Thanks for letting me know. --Dschwen (talk) 11:55, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Spooky town

[edit]

Did you see the real prequel to Star Wars? (In case you are wondering what the real prequel was, it was American Graffiti). -- carol (talk) 21:49, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hm, you mean due to the Ford - Lucas combination? Quite a stretch ;-). No, I haven't seen this one yet. But I always wanted. Should keep this in mind for the next visit to the library (yes, shame on me I check out movies at the library, not books. I'm that generation ;-) ). --Dschwen (talk) 21:56, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, if you follow the funding, it was the prequel. That movie was not so great as Star Wars which was a first for so many things, but it fanned out greater than Star Wars did. Star Wars was copied; I think that American Graffiti was the real money maker -- it depends though on how closely linked ABC Network and the beginning of all of the Lucus enterprises were. I always forget that HF was in that. It is the Howard - Lucus combination that is the one I remember the most, inspite of all the following movies....
(skipping to the end) ....how long do you think that Wolfman Jack's hair would be if he let it grow since that movie?
Also, it speaks highly of your character that you get movies from the library. It is probably good to buy movies that you really enjoyed though. I bought most of my media and even then, the few that I didn't -- it seemed to be taken advantage of. Perhaps by the technology developed by the Industrial..... I really am about done being stuck in spooky town like I am and have been. It would be really nice to speak with anyone not from here or stuck here about some of the experiences I have had with the direct satellite in particular. Sorry to only hint here. -- carol (talk) 22:18, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Duh, movies instead of books. How do the fines for lateness compare between library and retail renters? I was a late book returner for most of my puberty which caused me to buy books instead of check them out as an adult.... -- carol (talk) 22:21, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

humidity in midwest

[edit]

Another photograph which makes me miss the hell which is my home; there should be a really beautiful few hours again in the Autumn (not unlike those few hours in the spring) -- try not to miss those.... I am guessing that there was a humidity of +87% that day and no wind in the windy city.

I am also impressed with the quick catch at EW for the rendered image and it feels similar to other things going on there which leads me to the real question that brings me here.

I keep purchasing "cage free eggs" for my consumption here and I have been wondering lately, with all of my recent experiences and such if letting the chickens out of the cage is such a good idea. Any thoughts on this as a cause of the effect which can be easily changed here? -- carol (talk) 23:19, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh wow. Yes, it was humid. The trail to the top of the dune was labled strenuous, which I couldn't quite believe (tht thing is only 120ft high). But the heat and humidity made me sweat torrents. Later we went for a swim. Very refreshing!
Some of these chickens should better be kept in a cage. As for the real thing, chicken like to dig in the dirt with their feet (I guess the wiki analogies would work here as well). So we try to get cage free as well. The next level would be free range (under open skies), which supposedly is not in accordance with chicken nature (they prefer cover from potential bird of prey attacks). --Dschwen (talk) 14:28, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am not fond of the personification that happens with humans, classically with animals and also the recent with software and mechanical stuff. I dislike the situation that exists that it is the allowed communication. I read two administrative votes here that were about the job being kind of like a janitor which is not a bad job on a computer and I can see how writing software that does makes the task easy would be interesting. I have reverted some vandalism at English wikipedia. Some of it was really clever and while wrong, it was kind of a pleasure to revert it in its silliness.
Here is the other thing that I do not like about this situation. I honestly think I am getting weak living in California. I read somewhere once that in five years a healthy human being has a completely new lungs; so now I have California lungs -- for example.
More weather related stuff from a time that I was in charge of things somewhere. My store hired people (often from the high school) to bag groceries and to gather the carts and a few of the maintenance things that needed to happen while the store was running. I remember this one time that I did not miss the bad situation but that doesn't mean that I caught all of them either. A missed bad situation that was honestly missed (like I did not turn my head and let something happen so I knew it anyways). In the afternoon, the temperature report was well over 95degrees F; the parking lot with no trees would have been much worse though. I had one bag person; a nice girl who showed up, did her job very well and went home when scheduled. Never, ever complaining. It would have been her responsibility alone to get all of the carts for the whole shift. There was nothing in my job description that said I had to notice this or that I had to help -- and not even a trigger for it. Like, a guideline that said "at 5pm or near then, look around to see if one employee is overburdened". It was sheer luck I think that I noticed that this girl, this very nice and treasured employee of ours was going to be abused by the job descriptions.
And like I said, I remember the situations that I noticed and I never looked away so what I don't know is how many times I missed a situation like that. There is a group of people who either via politeness training or just a part of their character who are unable to complain and want to be proud of their work and things they do. I am often like this and that girl was very much like this! I looked away once with her older sister -- the amount of beer being purchased was not too much, it was being purchased by a person who was old enough and the more interesting thing was the cashier who carded people based on ethnic origin and did not card the "child" who was accompanying the "adult" (2 or 3 years older) as was happening to the people who had a certain ethnic appearance.
On super heros and super villains; I did not really need a nemesis to enjoy that job and I don't think the kids and others working there needed it either. There were individuals there that put themselves into that position though. The store was busy enough that there was enough operational cruft that it was the logical "villain".
That is a lot of words. Slaunger got some more grocery store memories. Did I mention how much I dislike being where I am? It is like there are just enough people who want me not to be human. -- carol (talk) 15:44, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Please be! Anyhow, may I ask where about in California you live? I used to live in LA for about a year, and in Livermore for a couple of months. I enjoyed my time there, but I guess it is not so much the place, more the people you have to spend time with. --Dschwen (talk) 16:04, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Much closer to Livermore. They have a really really nice digital theater there. (1px = 1 inch!!! I actually cried when I saw the computer generated three dimensional text via that screen.) I have a theory that the SciFi channels Eureka was about Livermore. When I saw Transformers there, 5 out of 6 cars on the road there were Fords and the movie had GMs; obviously, I find this to be remarkable. It is close to San Jose where I have been staying; I find it difficult to say I have been living here though -- compared to what I called living in Michigan. During the season of mist here, often, the airport there reroutes their traffic over this burg; on the dividing line between Sunnyvale and Mountain View and in the suburban blob on the map that is called "The Bay Area".
Germany to LA to Livermore to Illinois; it starts to defy belief :) -- carol (talk) 16:46, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The one in Pleasanton/Dublin? I've been there. Eureka has a more moderate climate though. But I've never seen that many physics related bumper stickers. --Dschwen (talk) 17:09, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Dschwen, thanks for reviewing and supporting my images at QIC. You mentioned something about headings to the geocoding. Can you please explain what you mean? Regards Muhammad 11:37, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, like so: {{Location|40|6|30.280|N|87|46|42.456|W|heading:S}}. type:landmark is not used and can be ommitted (since we are coding the location of the camera, and that's not a landmark in any case ;-) ). javascript assist assistance

[edit]

I did thank you for how easy it is to manage the children that QICBot drops off at the pool now, didn't I? -- carol (talk) 02:13, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The real reason I left this was because I had accidentally told Benh how to fix the signature. Then I was thinking about how anyone supporting any of the remaining images for that day would have that incredible cheesy and non-Benh like review as their own. Then I was thinking that maybe QICBot might expand the signature when running through the page -- but QICBot doesn't have javascript enabled, eh?
It would have been extremely funny to me if QICBot had supported those images with those particular reviews, but perhaps not the kind of character attributes that a good bot should acquire.
It was when I looked at what happened today, kind of like the sound of the thud of a joke that should have been funny failing miserably. -- carol (talk) 19:03, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This might indeed be the source of my starting to use the phrase -- I did see something recently and I looked through many of those when it was difficult to think for myself here. So, maybe not crickets and maybe not a thud but more like a Kerplunk? I could figure out which ones I looked at, which is less than the almost 500 that are there. -- carol (talk) 21:54, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Probably.Esby (talk) 14:05, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
According to the specification they are not supposed to be empty. Well, If you see any more cases, please let me know. How did you find the ones above by the way? --Dschwen (talk) 14:28, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think it was my fault first.
I used exiftool to tag these jpeg (I am the uploader of the two photographs)
exiftool "-GPSLatitude=43.12006" "-GPSLongitude=5.93175" "*.JPG"

Flickr seems to handle these correctly (at least when you upload new images that are are geotagged.)
Maybe the default are just N / E if not precised?
I guess I'll fix the tool I used to generate these coordinates. (I was extrapolating these from a gps itinerary log file.)
Esby (talk) 14:42, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Page 46 of the EXIF standard states that GPSLatitudeRef is either "N" or "S" and that there is no default value (at least that's how I understand it). So maybe you should just add those to your exiftool commandline to keep the images standard compliant. --Dschwen (talk) 14:55, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bot malfunction?

[edit]

This seems like an error in tagging. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 10:17, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This actually seems like an error in the MediaWiki software or the DB (race condition?). DschwenBot made a few thousand extractions of GPS EXIF data it was bound to stumble across a glitch. The code does not even remotely contain anything about CopyVio tagging. It is simply impossible that the bot inserted that template. I wonder what we should do about that. --Dschwen (talk) 12:30, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bots and new admin and new bot writers

[edit]

I thought it would be good to get the newer bot writers and the more recent of those here onto a new project; I honestly did fairly well while being a substitute in high schools here, considering that I think it is impossible for any one person to manage a classroom of 20 to 30 people aged 15 to 18 who consumed ecstacy on their lunch break. That experience also with my success in real life with operational cruft being the real enemy.

For the purposes of full disclosure, I did lose a car in Autoshop once. It was, interestingly enough, after 1)lunch and 2)the other shop teachers looked in and I heard them say "she seems to be holding her own" which literally, there is nothing to hold, but figuratively perhaps. I am still sorry about that car, it was beautiful. -- carol (talk) 00:23, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That being said, Rocket000 is a genius with templates and has been really helpful. MultiChills bot is only capable of passive aggressive template pasting and the author does not seem to be "into" being productive. Are you in any way interested in helping with COMBotBot? I saw on some of the fish categories that a bot like this would potentially be more useful than just for the plants I have been working with, but BotBot was just too "cute" of a name not to use it.... -- carol (talk) 22:18, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Have you seen Batman yet? My spoiled eyes -- already spoiled by incredible photography here, it was like seeing that image of Hong Kong via IMax 3D also and honestly, seeing it here was almost enough spoilage for me! The ferry was really really really cool in the writing. All of the writing was really good and it was not stupidified. And the problem with the spoilage of these eyes is that now they want digital IMax. The only problem with the writing is that for this one, the super hero as a human has superstrength as well -- too many really good things to not forgive/overlook this inconsistency. They had a different acter for the girl, I liked her more than the first one. You, the photographer of those ferry photographs, should see Batman, it would be nice if you could see it via IMax. That was my second IMax experience and the first one, all I can say is that I did not throw up during it (it was about the space shuttle). -- carol (talk) 23:00, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Let me answer the important question first: yes, I've seen batman. But no, unfortunately not in an IMAX theatre. But I was so impressed by this move that I'm seriously considering watching it a second time on the really big screen. The nearest one is probably in Chicago though. The script was really great, and the ferry scene is the most memorable to me. The whole scene give it me, you can tell them I took it by force. I'm going to do what you should have done 10mins ago that was just brilliant and keeps resurfacing in my head even a week or two after I saw it. It is quite a bit of story you get for the money (2.5h) and the action scenes are pretty impressive as well (I wonder how that truck flip must have looked like on the IMAX screen). When I heard all the rave about heath ledgers performance I at first attributed it to the hype around his untimely death, but boy I was wrong, that was quite a performance.
I am going to remember the bank president/manager scene. Non-typical for such a movie where that guy blew a doorway into the main area and took out two of the "bad guys". Then after that scene was over, I realized that it had been the Joker who had stopped and looked the suited guy over, respectfully and with consideration and then later discussion of respect between the two that followed -- The Joker had actually given that guy a lot of respect already and then by only making him appear silly and with a little unfounded fear with the smoke bomb (and not an explosive bomb). The brilliance of the orange people and the regular people & the orange people versus the regular people on the ferry scene makes it a feel good movie, for certain and a feel good movie for all of the right reasons. The bank president/manager as a strong individual and not a compliant victim and the respect among criminals (he was the mob bank president, afterall) was very also a feel good thing, for me. About actors, dead and alive, I was glad to see Eric Roberts given a non-B role at long last. I always liked him better than his sister (and might have judged his sister a little harshly sometimes because I was wanting to see more of her brother) and this actor is capable of depth more than that movie character allowed him. I learned last night that Heath Ledger was a Hollywood "pretty boy" so if you are going to leave this world, perhaps it is nicer to leave it as the not so pretty joker instead. The gradient of Jokers -- Caesar Romero, Jack Nichols and now Heath Ledger. It makes me concerned about what the population of the species human will be like if there is a more brilliant version of this character than this current one. Seriously concerned. It is my favorite "in drag" scene now also -- eh, some of the other ones tended to piss me off more than anything because they were "impossible to be" women. Heath Ledgers nurse was a really really good drag scene!!!
Let me think about the bot. --Dschwen (talk) 23:12, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Corn, beans and seam errors

[edit]

That seam error was the first thing I saw when I looked at that image and I totally looked at that image because it was like one of the places I lived in so much (Michigan has more slopes, especially when not in the center of the state would be the difference, yet there are panos like this there.) I object to it being called Corn fields as there are almost as many bean fields there, but that is perhaps way too much nit-picking. The seam error was the first thing I saw when I looked at it and it was not a Benh squared area of concern where as much as I look into the area I can see nothing -- it was crimped and edges unmatching. This room is a flooded with light as it gets right now though. I even tried it in the browser window to see where that expanded view of the image to be. The faint spot is not worth the effort if I can't find the seam error. The feeling here is that something is wrong! :)

The next thing I wanted to look at was the geolocation of it to see if that area is passable in during a windy winter snowstorm. Except that doesn't tell me what direction you were looking. If I knew what direction you were looking when taking the photographs, I can tell you if it is or not.

I am going to look when display friendly darkness fills the room instead.

MultiChill does the first thing I ask, can only do categories (like pasting links to other wikis categories into the categories here which I find to be not useful and frustrating to use) and doesn't look to see if I had a second thought or an additional (and easy to accomplish) task.

An aside-- I don't like how this is appearing to be like Dorothy and the wizard of oz, btw. There was a huge problem (in my opinion) on gimp irc where the users there seemed to be acting out the different roles for a television show. Fun for a clubhouse filled with pre-pubescents, perhaps but really stupid, not intelligent and mostly idiotic for a software development environment. Interestingly enough, that television show aimed itself at the often extremely intelligent scifi crowd but while having their attention, talked way down to them as if they were complete and total morons. I would like to think that this is a big mistake to make. And I don't want to be Dorothy. I worked too hard and lived too many years and accomplished too much. Besides that, I was a Rogers and Hammerstein Cinderella tot, which I think was a good warning for young women to be more than socialites which should mean that there doesn't actually need to be a prince and then something about when the shoe fits... fini. (the more would be something positive about those monkeys and a mention of the first Outlander and a scathing review of what my family from the nineties liked about the Wizard of Oz movie).

So, I write this before I return to Rockets talk page to outline my new idea (136 templates too late kind of new) in the case that I can tell you (and you just believe me about this) that the corn doesn't change that much between now and when it changes color (the day before it tassals is really cool, btw, it grows about a foot and the plants look like they are standing on their tip-toes and then the next day, blat! tassaled). There is a day where it is golden colored before turning a dull beige. Oh, they might cut some to feed the cows and that is interesting but perhaps not photogenic. Occassionally, a silo impodes but that has to do with what is in the silo and they should be empty now. In August, I quit weeding my garden also, any weed that made it that far into the summer, in my opinion, deserved to be able to live its life out. So, if you can be now interested in looking into COMBotBot you are welcome there.... -- never been in Kansas carol (talk) 20:02, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Heading in Exif

[edit]

--Dschwen (talk) 20:27, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
--Kolossos (talk) 07:11, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Weshalb?

Fragt --Ikiwaner (talk) 17:42, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

--Dschwen ( ) 17:48, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Lieber Daniel, auf Anwort 1 bin ich gespannt. Dein Input zu 2 hat mich veranlasst, mal selbst im EXIF-Standard nachzulesen un siehe da, du hast recht: Es gibt ein separates Tag für Reference for direction of movement und Reference for direction of image. Insofern produziert Panorado Flyer falsche Tags.
--Dschwen ( ) 21:46, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Mist, Database ist gerade down. --Dschwen ( ) 21:48, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Quatsch. Hmm.
Sorry. --Dschwen ( ) 19:13, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Danke, ich werds ausprobieren! Liebe Grüsse --Ikiwaner (talk) 21:53, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Très bien! :-) That is a nice way of presenting the data, as an image with a satellite backdrop (by the way what is the source of the satellite data?), and an additional KML for GoogleEarth. Good luck with the next roads. This will certainly be useful for other wikipedias as well. --Dschwen ( ) 20:21, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

a simple change to hotcat.js?

[edit]

Could one of the javascript authoring people make it so that hotcat doesn't suggest certain categories? I am making a few categories via template and there is also sometimes almost a thousand images appearing in Category:Hidden categories via software suggestions. There was, on another talk page, a question about the reason that __HIDDEN_CATEGORY__ containing categories are not ignored by hotcat and kin.

Also, an apology for this request maybe seeming to be terse, I am holding in some opinions about the way the atlas pages work here.... -- carol (talk) 22:04, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mh, yeah. Let it out I guess. The way hotcat currently works filtering out hidden cats would be non trivial. The mediawiki api, that provides the list does not return any info on the hidden/visible status as far as I know. --Dschwen (talk) 23:22, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Kind of boring task in the stack of things that could be done here, eh? My complaint above this is about the atlas here sending me to en.wikipedia pages which except for the fact that I was looking for maps, I would have started there. The non-complaints are greater, like where alternative spellings are included and also old names for old divisions and stuff like that. Being sent via hidden link in text to en.wikipedia was the only complaint (the maps are here....) -- carol (talk) 23:32, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What sends you to en.wikipedia pages? --Dschwen (talk) 00:16, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Atlas pages here.
Oh, I see. I'm actually not involved with those. I'm just responsible for the WikiMiniAtlas. By the way I watched American Graffiti last week. That's a pretty good movie. Even has a Carol in it! You are probably not quite that age group, are you? (how impolite of me to ask). --Dschwen (talk) 02:51, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Very sorry for my mistake about what atlas and where. I do still feel relieved to have mentioned it, however.
That movie was not star wars. I had forgotten that there was a Carol in it, or perhaps did not notice when I saw it. Or, huh, was that the girl in the thunderbird? Heh. My first vehicle was a van, a donation from my dad, previously outfitted for camping, with the longest possible wheelbase then and yes, it easily drove over 100mph. I loved my first vehicle more than most of the people I knew and know. If I need to be sorry for this, let me know. It was not a thunderbird! It was however one of the cars I would replace in a heartbeat if I could though. The question they marketed the movie with was "Where were you in '62?" My answer to that question is "It depends on the month. Before 09, not born yet." My mom, who was 17 and pregnant for much of '62 said that to her, that movie wasn't much like her high school days were. She was also seventeen, pregnant and in a rural area not unlike the photographs you have been uploading. In the movie world, I would have been one the freshman class in "Dazed and Confused" although, I don't remember any hazing (which was the very little bit of actual storyline in that movie) and I did my partying like that when I got to college not in high school, possibly because of my dork status and our (divorced) family financial situation and not very much partying like that in college possibly because I started to enjoy my dork status and also because I honestly do not like the alcohol very much. The Dazed and Confused soundtrack and mindset was all real familiar though.
On the impoliteness of age-telling/asking. For certain that must be one of those things invented by people who were not proud of things they did. -- carol (talk) 04:48, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I can wait to complain mention it nicely and with examples the next time it happens. Or I can fix it since I am there and having the problem. It is while I am making the new larger areas for Category:Ecozones that it is a problem for me and usually the reason that I am looking for maps here and often it is while I am attempting to do several few other things. Or, knowing where to mention it (instead of here) perhaps. I feel much better actually just getting it out of my system to be very honest.
And it is kind of about the larger problem of when a gallery becomes an article. Thanks for having your "Seriuz talk page", btw. -- carol (talk) 01:10, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Here is the other thing about that. I have a template that is making categories like Category:Genera of Asteraceae which I "hid" today and it makes the page look nicer and no reason not to hide them, but I started thinking that it would be nice to have something like {{Nobots}} that worked for the suggestion softwares also. -- carol (talk) 23:36, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

movies, cars and birthorder

[edit]

I looked at IMDB since I haven't seen that movie in more than a decade. Mackenzie Phillips' (who played "Carol" in that movie) mother was one of the singers on Basketball Jones, among other really well known songs from back then and before. The quote is funny and I did remember that Wolfman Jack was in that movie but not Harrison Ford and not Suzanne Sommers and not Mackenzie Phillips (who did not marry Eddie Van Halen) and not a lot of other people who were in that movie. But that movie introduced Wolfman Jack to the rest of the world (that was in the day when the broadcast area was defined by the tower that emitted the waves) and he was the same character later and other places where all of those other people were acting a role. So, I defend my memory about this.

I think, at the end of psychological study, the only thing that really matters will be birth order. That being said, I am 99% certain that I was conceived in a Thunderbird; and I would have rather thought about the "business" of the media which the way it fanned out from that movie is really interesting, don't you think?

The next thing I want to look up is the movie "Eat My Dust" which (I think) was Ron Howards first directorial attempt and also a Roger Corman movie and I saw it at the cinema of my little rural midwestern small town which had more horses than cornfields compared to the rest of the area there.

The movie "Eat My Dust" had (in my opinion) the most eloquent placement of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" used via cinematic medium. The attempt to use snobbish review language here is supposed to be funny when coupled with the one scene I remember from that move that I saw 30 or more years ago and not since then. -- carol (talk) 23:33, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Message for the maintainer of MediaWiki:Common.js

[edit]

When I put things that were written for monobook.js into my standard.js they don't work. This makes no sense to me, but I don't know much about javascript.

Do you have an opinion about this:

// Replacer
function wpTextboxReplace(){
  var s = prompt("Search regexp:");
  if(s){
    var r = prompt("Replace /"+s+"/ with:");
    if(!r && r != '') return;
    var txt = document.editform.wpTextbox1;
    txt.value = txt.value.replace(new RegExp(s, "mg"), r);
  }
}
addOnloadHook(function(){
  if(document.forms.editform){
    addPortletLink('p-cactions', 'javascript:wpTextboxReplace()', 'Replace', 'ca-replace',
                   'Regexp replace for the edit window', 'R', document.getElementById('ca-history'));
  }
});

One reason I am asking your opinion of it is because I have yet to try to see if it works in monobook.js -- my opinion so far is that it doesn't work in standard.js.

I think I am here bothering you with this because Rocket000 (the monobook.js I got it from) thinks it should be a part of Common.js. Once again, I have no opinion about this as was explained earlier.

BTW, how is watching the corn grow going for you? -- carol (talk) 03:52, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Uhm, yeah, it is nice, but it won't work with the "standard"skin, because
document.getElementById('ca-history'))
returns null, as the ca-history ID does not exist in that skin (for whatever reason...). --Dschwen (talk) 12:28, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Lupo explained the id differences and I felt kind of dumb; a familiar feeling. -- carol (talk) 13:28, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

--Ikiwaner (talk) 20:41, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

CarolSpears semiprotection

[edit]

Do you really think 24 hours of semiprotection was excessive? Durova (talk) 18:46, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hehe, well, I don't think you did a bad thing at all! You meant well in trying to defend Carol's page. And now that I look at it, I actually didn't realize it was only a semiprotection. But with only one edit I would have just reverted and moved on. So let me strike the cannons and make it bb guns ;-). --Dschwen (talk) 19:01, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Having made English wikipedia a better place by being a part of my blocking there, I am curious about the reason these people are here now "protecting" me. I also will wait for an explanation of the mindset that works this way without providing one for these possessors of that mindset.
Also, far be it for me to need to use any of Durovas time. There must be still about 100,000 images that need to be restored and entered into English wikipedia FPC and stopping those good works to protect me is like the perfect model stopping to wipe a small blemish from someone elses child. I suggest that the someone else would rather ask for the help than just have the object of English wikipedia perfection to assist with that. Or in other words, keep up your good work and don't worry about me. -- carol (talk) 21:11, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The reason is quite simple: there's a certain baseline of respect I'd extend toward anyone. I'm not the sort to turn a blind eye when an editor's user space gets trolled, just because that person and I have disagreed on other matters. The semiprotection was done with good intentions. Of course if it's your request that I recuse myself from now on, I'll certainly do that. Durova (talk) 17:21, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It is not a typical administrative action here. I have a question for you. If they decide that edit counts can reduce an administrators privs, will they look at the edit counts of the people who voted for the existing administration and reduce privs based on that? That is a question about those "certain baselines". -- carol (talk) 19:28, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll take that answer to mean No, thank you to further administrative intervention by me at your user space. Seeing as we're not on cordial terms, I'll decline the invitation to discuss other topics. Best wishes, Durova (talk) 20:25, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

batman, COMBotBot, "protection"

[edit]

Once I asked for protection from harrassment here and got blocked for 24 hours. If I am going to be unable to ask for protection, I really do not want any anonymous user name, regardless of their status, edit counts, permission, community status determining that I need protection. I even requested that the block be removed from this whoever who decided I was in need of assistance/protection. I am still quite pissed off about how the request I made to stop being harrassed the one time I thought I would try that group of people out for usefulness and ability was handled. Thank you for removing the protection. Before this wiki started to look and smell like English wikipedia, (message billboards now for the ADMIN to attend yet another vote, for example) it would have been simply reverted by a pleasant watcher or by, as in this case, me. BLUP! <-- everything I am not saying!

Sorry about that and thank for removing it. My review of the second time I saw Batman actually leads to talking about COMBotBot so I will mark it or summarize it for the (non-literal) meat portion of the meal. It is a problem I have seen with many television and movies lately. And one more time, I really enjoyed that movie. It was however, as if they had no plan -- a bunch of disasters and the "good guys" trying to make sense of it and put it backwards into a "plan". This weekend was (in my opinion) a good one for the commons since so many of the categories which were are listed here have disappeared. Trying to put together what they were attempting to do kept reminding me of how the plot of Batman worked. Then, it reminded me in real life of when my ex/bf was standing in my garden and said "None of your friends are helping you here, how come?" That was pretty much the end of a 10 year relationship because he was trying to make me feel bad about some people who really had other lives so my reply to him was "Yeah, and you are not here either, btw." No guessing from me what the hell was going on, just getting to getting the task done.

He did the same thing on the phone last year: "Do you know what they are making those soldiers do?" I didn't answer. This just making a mess and (perhaps) bringing a naive person in who has a little intelligence and imagination is growing old -- both for making entertainment and for relationships between people and for actual accomplishment.

Is there a way to send the English wikipedia billboard that is appearing in my watchlist back to English wikipedia? I see a million things that can be done here and the people who are enabled seem only to be able to vote about who should be enabled. Enabling should be also being able to do things? Accomplish simple tasks?

I spent sometime with younger people -- in real life. Several decades I always had buskids around or bagkids (both from the local high schools) and my five years of substitute teaching which were mostly successful -- not perfect. I argue that it is not a perfect situation to begin with though. Rocket is great with templates. Botchill actually did half of a task for me once and did that half well. If it were an actual school situation, it would be different. Not doing things gets you held back a year. Halfassed work gets halfassed grades or firing from the place of employment. The one "good child" in my web team, when we did the web site -- that "kind" of person has disappeared since I arrived in California.

It seems like the same situation I had with the web site, where everyone who was involved then and had been involved for years could probably have done that task but none of them were in a helping frame of mind about it. I understand the task being not so fun as it is large. Having said that, I look at the list of categories that were emptied and deleted and I feel good. Just doing something because it can be done and things will really be nicer when they are done, in real life, these are honest motivations!

In summary

  1. is there a way to send the English wikipedia voting and billboards about voting back to English wikipedia?
  2. thank you for removing my "protection"; how does one ask for protection when it is needed and justified without getting blocked?
  3. please write that bot!!
  4. This not only felt good, it was good!

Miniatlas was cool, I know that what I am asking is kind of hohum compared to that. I know this, that is the reason I am willing to beg some. -- carol (talk) 21:11, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I looked at ComComCommons:COMBotBotBot. First question: how can I generate a list of... ...well... Tribuus(Tribi?)... supercategories which need the list-slurping-processing mentioned in the very first step? --Dschwen (talk) 22:05, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I just made a list for a family which has no tribe (that I can find right now) at Category:Icacinaceae. The first list (I think) should get them all and the templates should manage which tree gets used or not -- should and so far are!!
Yay! -- carol (talk) 23:49, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I was told that several of my images that i uploaded were deleted because of copyright, first of all, some of those pictures a friend sent to me, she had made several alterations. and second, how come other people can upload "copyrighted" images but i can't. over at wikipedia, there are many, many, many articles that have copyrighted pictures that were uploaded by everyday people like me, and yet they were able to keep them there? someone i don't see this as fair. --Emmett-Rosalie-Cullen (talk) 02:19, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Emmett, this isn't really about fair. If an image is copyrighted and not made available under a free license it does not belong on commons. Full stop. If you know of any other non free pictures on commons, please let me know, and I will delete them immediately.
What you saw in those Wikipedia articles were most likely images that were not uploaded to commons, but to the wikipedias directly. The english Wikipedia for example allows direct image uploads of so-called fair-use images. These can be non-free images which may be used in a certain context, such as album covers to be used in the article about the album (but nowhere else). Fair use is a concept in US law, and it resembles the right to cite. Commons however does only allow truely free images to be hosted on its servers. I hope that cleared things up a bit. --Dschwen (talk) 02:37, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar for you

Daniel, U.S. Route 491 is now a featured article. Your picture was an excellent addition to the article, thanks. Davemeistermoab (talk) 02:32, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, thanks! This certainly is the most unexpected barnstar (not that I'm expecting any ;-) ). --Dschwen (talk) 20:01, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo Daniel, I was wondering if something similar could be done for VIs as has been doen for QIs? It seems like you almost have the tool, just someone (perhaps me) need to build the sub page structure? What do you think? -- Slaunger (talk) 19:16, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. That seems fine to me. Build the subpage structure, and give me a list of subpages which you want to appear in the drop-down boxes. Adapting both javascript and the bot code should be easy. --Dschwen (talk) 20:00, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Great, I'll drop a note on Commons talk:Valued image candidates about this to perhaps get some input to also the subpage structure. My initial view is that we should adapt the same structure as on QIC unless some VI specifics pops up which warrants for some specializations. -- Slaunger (talk) 20:07, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

VICbot operation

[edit]

Hi Dschwen,

Is VICbot running properly? I notice from its contributions that it has been active on August 20, but it did not close Commons:Valued image candidates/Jezioro chlop wisnia6522.jpg and remove that from the candidates list, although that has been closed since August 18?

Cheers,

-- Slaunger (talk) 17:50, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it still has an annoying bug related to utf-8 characters in filenames. Sometimes it throws an exception when an image with wierd characters gets selected for the sample gallery. I'll look into that. --Dschwen (talk) 17:53, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thank you. There is plenty of work for VICbot after my closures today...-- Slaunger (talk) 18:16, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see you are now catching the exception. Now, you just need to make it deal with special characters in the file name... -- Slaunger (talk) 20:34, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Has it given up entirely. It does not seem to have processed any images the last two days, although there are plenty to clean-up? -- Slaunger (talk) 20:12, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have finally described and defined the remaining parts of the process for Valued image set closure. I have deliberately put all steps needing human attention in the beginning, such that the last steps 4-11 can be automated with VICbot. I hope you will bite the bullet. I have manually closed the ones promoted so far, and it has been a pain... -- Slaunger (talk) 22:28, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Spezial:Linkliste

[edit]

Hello, I am using de.wikipedia for whatever the Strasburger system is since if I ever did find information on it, it was written in German....

At de.wikipedia, I have a red link to a species which they have put into two different (yet similar) families: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spezial:Linkliste/Acanthocalyx

I almost removed it from de:Kardengewächse myself, but de:cided that a native speaker should look at it instead.

Aufvietersein, carol (talk) 06:54, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

this is an edit to get the VI stuff out of the messages....
Yikes. Sorry, but this is just beyond me. I have no idea how that botanical categorisation scheme works, is there a difference between Gattung and Familie? If so, then the inclusion might be valid. --Dschwen (talk) 21:55, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know the answer to your question. de:Kardengewächse is being presented as a family (Dipsacaceae) as is de:Morinaceae (Morinaceae) and that genus is being listed being a member of both families. To the best of my understanding, divorce and accidental, extra-marital births are not being accounted for in any of the plantae trees so far. In fact, it is a set of definitions where only genus members are allowed to reproduce together. And it makes sense in a larger scheme, as well, as the phrase "I'll be a monkeys uncle" is still a fiction-based funny.... -- carol (talk) 05:59, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comments So, you went back to Chicago, maybe the best place in the world for shooting buildings! Remember when, a long time ago, I used to oppose your panos for some milimetric stitching errors? Well, i guess i became soft with age... BTW, how did you clean your sensor? -- Alvesgaspar 23:44, 22 August 2008 (UTC), Hm, I spent quite some time on this baby (needed to make extensive use of vertical guides), but I haven found any glitches so far. For cleaning the sensor I use the lint free kimwipes and methyl alcohol (don't use any other kind, it'll leave stains!), I wrapped the kimwipe around a piece of teflon, that is soft enough not to scratch the sensor and makes a nice handle to clean the sensor with one broad swipe. --Dschwen 00:14, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Daniel, I just recieved a notice, that a picture of mine was promoted to QI status, but the wrong version has been granted the QI status. The original got 4 support, 2 oppose, so that version should be the right one. --Massimo Catarinella (talk) 16:29, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just fix it (use Check Usage to replace all occurrences in the QI galleries). QICbot always promotes the version that comes first in the nomination (that was announced on the QIC talk page). So if you add an edit, put it before the original to have it promoted next time. --Dschwen (talk) 19:38, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

QICbot

[edit]

Hello, it seems that the bot does not handle the "Consensual review". There are some entries that may be already handled. --Berthold Werner (talk) 13:06, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And it appears VICbot did not complete its turn either (a promoted image is still on the list). Sorry to keep you busy...-- Slaunger (talk) 13:14, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For QICbot I'd say it's usually the users fault (messed up format), for VICbot it probably is my fault (that bot isn't as mature yet). I'm currently on a conference and have little time to deal with this. I'll take a look on the weekend. Sorry. --Dschwen (talk) 15:53, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dschwenbot

[edit]

--Dschwen (talk) 23:01, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

human participants in QIC

[edit]

Something for a laugh (perhaps) during your conference -- is it interesting to you that I am the only person who seems to be able to complete the QIC stuff that requires a person (human species) to do lately?

I honestly am taking a step back so that those who trashed the reviews can see what they did, but if they are only software then they cannot see it.

Administrators that are software? Is it possible to roll-back the review there to when there was a last sign of a human involved? -- carol (talk) 14:53, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh oh, why does this make me not want to go to COM:QIC to find out what is going on... --Dschwen (talk) 13:21, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, you should reward yourself or something for leaving the stipulation that there were a few things that a real human person needed to do before the bot would work. If I had an option to rollback things, I would rollback everything that happened since the last time that Lycaon successfully completed a CR closing. The people using the User instances now seem to be able to use the totaling template and seem to be able to do what the last person did exactly (like LC-de closed a draw but after that Dori tallied all of the promoted and declined and marked them as a draw). And lately (since a little before Lycaon spammed the review and right around the time that Forora became involved there and an admin, heh -- just to note the time frame, honest!) Lycaon has forgotten how to mark things for the bot (I think). CR stacked up and I have yet to look at the history to see who finally did mark several for the bot to remove. I really did leave things there so that Lycaon could know that his little QI seal of whatever was now being shared with quite a few exposed seams, blurry photos and dusty cameras. I tried to determine what was Dori's problem being that this user instance has been involved there since I put my first image into it in October 2007.
I was really surprised when I had read that QI had been left "more technically complicated" than FP because FP seems more complicated to me -- but more gui is universally considered to be less complicated? The changes you made for managing the ladies in waiting really were easier with and without javascript enabled. Without javascript enabling the pasting of the template was much easier than the process had been before -- as stupid as I felt after I tried it with the javascript.
The problem with the rollback is that there are a few that are really making great reviews there. Eusibus (something like that) comes to mind immediately and I am certain if I look at it there are others. Later today I will probably hold my breath and look through the history there. Weird how I missed the regulars there, even some of the regulars who were there. Heh. -- carol (talk) 13:52, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stuck nom in VIC

[edit]

Hi Daniel,

Any idea why Commons:Valued image candidates/Chinon CP 9 AF BW 1.JPG is removed from the candidates list by VICbot? -- Slaunger (talk) 10:19, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Because it is closed? Or did you mean not removed? Then the answer is, because it is not on the candidate page. Or did you remove it by hand now? Then the answer is, VIC bot only looks at the nominations modified within the last two days. If the bot screws up two days consecutively then the nom is forgotton. I changed this to 5 days and fixed a unicode bug in the bot. It should work now. --Dschwen (talk) 13:15, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
When I wrote the comment, this had been a problem for several (more than two) days, but in the latest VICbot run it has succesfully been removed by VICbot. Probably because you have increased to five days and fixed a bug. Anyway, everything looks OK now. Thanks. -- Slaunger (talk) 13:50, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and I see I added confusion in my first comment by not writing not in front of "removed". Communication is hard, especially when editors like myself do not actually read what they write ;-)
I did that on purpose today, but I can't remember if I canceled it or saved it. -- carol (talk) 17:03, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, you had not been naughty - this time. It was me alright, unless, of course, you have hacked my account or the history page - and my recollections of what has happened?!? -- Slaunger (talk) 19:14, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Another observation: Commons:Valued image candidates/Sunset above the clouds.jpg was not removed from the list although it was closed as declined prior to the bot run (I will remove it by hand now). -- Slaunger (talk) 13:45, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

movie time

[edit]

With some difficulty, I admit to wanting to see and then seeing Tropical Thunder. I am actually here to recommend seeing this especially if you do not look at the list of actors in it. I was as surprised by the cast list of this movie as I had been with the first of the new batmans and the scroll of the cast made me want to see it again. My surprise was not from the change of flesh color, btw but perhaps by the lack of make-up and extra hair, heh.

Unlike other movies of this genre, there seemed to be more plot (the assumption is that this genre typically makes fun of other movies more than having their own plot) which made the few times there was no plot standing out. I find myself today wondering the reason that they killed off the director of the movie within the movie so quickly.

If it is not too late to see the movie without looking at the cast list, I highly recommend it and I personally need to hold my breath and look at my web site again for something I think I wrote there a while back.... -- carol (talk) 17:03, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pano 360

[edit]

I noticed you took out a number of {{Pano360}} tags. While I agree that this tool is geared toward a 360 degree panorama, I've found that they also serve well for photos that are less than 360. Granted, the edges repeat upon themselves; but it still provides the same handy POV interface that is otherwise provided for a full 360. Does it's "360 only" requirement really necessitate removing it from non-360 images? Is there any comparable tool for images of less than 360 degrees? Might this be a question better posited to the Village Pump? Cheers! --Bossi (talkgallerycontrib) 06:32, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The tool is not just geared toward 360 deg panos, it is only for 360 deg panos. Hence the name. The nonmatching seam is not the only problem. The projection always assumes a 360 deg field of view. Other panos are projected wrong. It is detrimental to a panoviewer template, if the majority of the linked panos is misleading and wrong. Please do not re-add the template for now. I have been working on this, trying to find a way to make it work with lower fov panos. No luck so far. I'll start a bot run in the next few days which will comment out (instead of completely removing) the pano templates from your images. --Dschwen (talk) 15:22, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was not a big ordeal -- just thought I would mention this. -- carol (talk) 13:07, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Carol, unfortunately this is not the tool's fault, but some of the MediaWiki internal Javascript is broken in Firefox. Time to file a bug report. --Dschwen (talk) 16:09, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Still such an improvement even without the javascript. -- carol (talk) 19:21, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, works again, and it seems that it only cesed working due to a slight change in MediaWiki (preview HTML is not only empty but now also hidden by CSS if not in preview mode). The additional error looks like a bug in firefox. The selectionStart property of the textbox suddenly contains stylesheet data instead of an integer number. Odd! --Dschwen (talk) 20:06, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

One small favour

[edit]

Hi Daniel,

When settling on a subpage name convention for VI, we decided to drop the "Image:" prefix. As far as I recall that advice came from you with an argument making it easier to do i18n later. Now, this is giving a little problem, because a relatively large fraction of users cannot get used to omit the "Image:" prefix when nominating their VICs at COM:VIC (especially the FPC regulars) and this gives some cleanup afterwards and leads to confusion over and over again.

That made me think: Would it be possible to hook up a little JavaScript snippet on the add nomination button such that the user gets an error message when trying to create a nomination with a subpage name, which begins with "Image:"? If yes, would you do me the small favour of implementing it?

Thank you.

Sarcasm in public places

[edit]

The location thing seems like a great idea. It also seems to be another really good use for empty categories making a list of photographs/images which are needed. It seems like the bot I need would provide useful parts for this other thing.

I also thought it would be like that but yow, the politics of learning enough about a subject to adapt my plants idea to other areas is not too much but it was much further down the road if I was to be the only person thinking this way.

If you did not see the sarcasm, let me know.... -- carol (talk) 23:02, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was sarcasm about how incredibly easy that bot should be, Giggy seems to have (perhaps) misinterpreted this and that. -- carol (talk) 13:00, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sarcasm about public places

[edit]

Almost nothing except but poorly written software running (excluding the honest QICBot) at CR lately and that is sad. And you wrote that when you wrote that it would take a real human being to mark the stuff so the QICBot would remove it.

Being alive for 47 years, there are several things that I have done and said that I am sorry about. Being in California these last 5+ years and having the problems where I seemed to have woke up in someone elses life for the last almost 6 years, I am more often sorry about what I see than all of those things I am sorry about having said and done for 10 times that amount of time.

Is the only thing that people can do together is to trash nice things? -- carol (talk) 13:00, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A little more optimism please. Newbies just have to be trained ;-). We just have to be careful that there aren't too many clueless people. That might damage the process. I took a fresh look at the COMBotBot page and start working on it today. --Dschwen (talk) 19:03, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
They aren't new though. And thanks about the bot. -- carol (talk) 21:00, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And about the bot/software that reads a list of category names adds a template to the existing categories which do not have the template already and creates new categories and adds them if they don't exist and makes a talk page and pastes some text on that for all of the category names in the list -- probably, it doesn't need to be any more complicated than that.
Probably, if it is kept to be that simple then it will be much much much more useful for other similar projects. I appreciate that you are saving me the time to learn the extra stuff about the wiki interface and also, it has been a while since I have been authoring software (read this that a drunkard can do taxonomy if you like -- not that I have worked while intoxicated but I was not able to work more logically than this kind of easy stuff and consume that other stuff...). People are (or should be) different from each other though. So, whatever is like an appreciation.... -- carol (talk) 00:09, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Commons_talk:Geocoding#Geocoding_userpages_for_a_purpose

[edit]

--Dschwen (talk) 15:51, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I've edited your image of the Indiana State Capitol. Decide for yourself if this version is better. There is a stitching error present on the American flag near the bottom of the picture btw. --Massimo Catarinella (talk) 14:42, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comments good --Mbdortmund 18:53, 26 September 2008 (UTC)  Comment This is FP-material. I would just correct the small tilt (0,4 degrees) and do some additional cropping on the left. --Massimo Catarinella 11:54, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
