Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Hi,

Nice image. I replied to your message on the Village pump.

Seems OK now but the authorship has changed substantially. Do you know who is in fact the author? pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:01, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The original file on en en:Image:Boston T undistorted.gif was uploaded by en:user:Citynoise. It was copied from http://www.radicalcartography.net which has a cc-by-sa license. Citynoise appears to be the owner of that web site. I posted to his talk page about proposing the image for deletion, since a better image was at Commons [1]. He replied that he had a new version with better colors [2] and he uploaded here as Image:MBTA Boston subway map 2.png. So I believe all versions are by User:Citynoise and they are released as cc-by-sa. I don't know why he didn't do an overwrite when he uploaded the new image, maybe he caught the same filename error message and thought he didn't have the right permission. I guess the question is how to make sure he is properly attributed as the author. Someone could have deleted the first image and moved the second image but I don't see a move tab here on commons. Or we could have kept the name as Image:MBTA Boston subway map 2.png and then changed any article links. I hope I did the right thing. Dread Pirate Westley 13:21, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
I believe Citynoise is the author too. But is that the same person as the website owner/s, or is the website owner perhaps not very exact in his attribution of other people's images? I just mean if the person wants a better name than "Citynoise" to be attributed, it would be good to add that.
You did the right thing with the images, and as we can now undelete images it wouldn't matter that much if you didn't, anyway :) --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:35, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
File:MBTA_Boston_subway_map.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
