Structured Data on Commons Newsletter - Spring 2018
Welcome to the newsletter for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons! You can update your subscription to the newsletter and contribute to the next issue. Do inform others who you think will want to be involved in the project!
- Community updates
- Our dedicated IRC channel: wikimedia-commons-sd webchat
- Several Commons community members are working on ways to integrate Wikidata in Wikimedia Commons. While this is not full-fledged structured data yet, this work helps to prepare for future conversion of data, and helps to understand how Wikidata and Commons can work better together.
- Thanks to Jarekt and other contributors, some Commons templates can now be filled via Wikidata: {{Creator}} (Phabricator) and {{Institution}} (Phabricator). Work is ongoing on the {{Artwork}} template (Phabricator).
- Thanks to Mike Peel and others, Wikidata-powered infoboxes can now be added to Commons categories, with the template {{Wikidata Infobox}}. (Example)
- Multichill is working on an experimental workflow to upload images to Commons via Wikidata (and using metadata from Wikidata). See a part of it here.
- Join the community focus group!
- Do you want to help out translating messages about Structured Data on Commons from English to your own language? Sign up on the translators page.
- Contribute to the next newsletter.
- Discussions held
- Conversation about licensing and copyright modeling.

- Thanks for your kindness and deep interest in Philippine photos; history and only history will judge these pictures which are framed in the corridors of Mystic Reality and human solitude; as a Philippine Regional Trial Court Judge, I chose instead to capture the deepest secrets of human wisdom in this lonely planet from the farthest villages, sitios and barrios of towns of provinces of Luzon ... if you have time, please visit the Philippines, it is so beautiful as evidenced by the photos that come from my spirit and heart; I respectfully remain very sincerely yours, and best regards -Judgefloro 13:56, 7 April 2018 (UTC) (talk)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Some pages have templates that describe problems with that article. There is now more information for mobile readers and what is wrong with the article and how they could help fix it. [1]
- You can now thank users for many more actions than edits to a page. This was one of the top ten requests in the Wishlist Survey last year. [2]
- The sort order of categories will have errors for a short time starting Monday 9 April (UTC). We are upgrading versions of an internationalisation library (ICU) and using a script to update the database. This will take between a few hours and a few days depending on wiki size. You can read more details. [3]
- Tag filter titles will now work better on wikis where the tag filter title is in a language that is written in another direction than the language of that wiki. This could for example be an English title (written from left to right) on a Hebrew or an Arabic wiki (written from right to left). [4]
Problems
- The bookmark icon for saved filters on the recent changes page disappeared because of new icon changes. This has now been fixed. [5]
- For a week in March rollbacks got both the
rollback
and theundo
tag on the recent changes page and other pages where you see tags. This has now been fixed. [6]
Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 10 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 11 April. It will be on all wikis from 12 April (calendar).
- Patrolled edits now have three states instead of two. Recent changes filters are updated to show unpatrolled, autopatrolled and manually patrolled edits. [7]
Meetings
You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 10 April at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 11 April at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The iOS and Android apps will get synced reading lists later in April.

Brief aan Dr. T. D. Yih van de Museum van Volkenkunde
Kongsi-munten en andere Indische kèpèngs (09 D. 04 M. 2018 A.)
Dr. T.D.
Hoogachtend,
Dhr. Trung Quoc Don

Reminder: Share your feedback in this Wikimedia survey
Every response for this survey can help the Wikimedia Foundation improve your experience on the Wikimedia projects. So far, we have heard from just 29% of Wikimedia contributors. The survey is available in various languages and will take between 20 and 40 minutes to be completed. Take the survey now.
If you have already taken the survey, we are sorry you've received this reminder. We have design the survey to make it impossible to identify which users have taken the survey, so we have to send reminders to everyone. If you wish to opt-out of the next reminder or any other survey, send an email through EmailUser feature to WMF Surveys. You can also send any questions you have to this user email. Learn more about this survey on the project page. This survey is hosted by a third-party service and governed by this Wikimedia Foundation privacy statement. Thanks!
- I am pretty sure that there's a better way to push these types of notifications, such as creating a unique code identified with a user account that can only ve identified by the Wikimedia Foundation of something, I should probably write that down at the Phabricator or something... --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (Talk 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 02:29, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

Letter to Gary Ashkenazy (16 D. 04 M. 2018 A.)
This is a letter that I had sent to Gary Ashkenazy from the website Primaltrek / Primal Trek that mostly concerns itself with Chinese charms, as I have an interest in writing Wikipedia articles on ALL different types of Chinese numismatic charms but have little to no interest in collecting them myself in real life I asked Gary Ashkenazy to donate the images from Gary Ashkenazy's Primaltrek / Primal Trek by himself.
“Deae Gary Ashkenazy,
I hope to soon see you on Wikimedia Commons, I understand that you dislike the idea that your work will constantly be vandalised but the claim that Wikimedia Commons is constantly being vandalised is also greatly exaggerated. I personally patrol new pages and only very rarely find actual cases of vandalism happening.
Below is an example of how typical “vandalism” looks which is mostly just users adding nonsense, please see:

As you can see most vandals like this won't attempt to add hoaxes and/or other types of false information 🛈 so there really isn't any need to assume that misinformation about Chinese (numismatic) charms will be spread through Wikimedia Commons. Now I hope that you, Mr. Gary Ashkenazy will love 💘 this website and be happy 😊 with the Chinese Numismatic charms you can find here:

As I believe in transparency I am sharing this off-wiki contact I have had that relates to Wikimedia Commons with Mr. Gary Ashkenazy from Gary Ashkenazy's Primaltrek / Primal Trek regarding me attempting to convince him to join the website, although he said that he tried to be a contributor some time ago he didn't feel motivated “for personal reasons” and I tried to convince him to join.
