Problems

  • There was a problem with the Wikidata database last week. Some wikis went down for twenty minutes. Wikidata and other projects showed error messages. Interwiki links were not shown, some tools did not work and other problems. Some of this was fixed quickly. The developers are working on fixing the rest. [5][6][7]

Changes later this week

  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from April 14. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from April 15. It will be on all wikis from April 16 (calendar).

Future changes

  • Some graphs have not worked on mobile. This will soon be fixed. [8]
  • The article tab on talk pages of redirects links to the target of the redirect. It could link to the redirect page itself instead. You can leave feedback on this.
  • For pages using syntax highlighting, the use of the deprecated <source> tag, as well as the use of the deprecated enclose parameter, will add tracking categories.

This early version of the Reply tool automatically signs and indents comments.

The Editing team has been working on the talk pages project. The goal of the talk pages project is to help contributors communicate on wiki more easily. This project is the result of the Talk pages consultation 2019.

Reply tool improved with edit tool buttons
In a future update, the team plans to test a tool for easily linking to another user's name, a rich-text editing option, and other tools.

The team is building a new tool for replying to comments now. This early version can sign and indent comments automatically. Please test the new Reply tool.

  • On 31 March 2020, the new reply tool was offered as a Beta Feature editors at four Wikipedias: Arabic, Dutch, French, and Hungarian. If your community also wants early access to the new tool, contact User:Whatamidoing (WMF).
  • The team is planning some upcoming changes. Please review the proposed design and share your thoughts on the talk page. The team will test features such as:
    • an easy way to mention another editor ("pinging"),
    • a rich-text visual editing option, and
    • other features identified through user testing or recommended by editors.

Now that I think about it, I only wanted to write ✍🏻 a single Wikipedia article about Ryukyuan cash coins, but wanted to use Gary Ashkenazy's (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) Primaltrek / Primal Trek website to expand some articles about Korean and Chinese cash coins. Later I even let Gary Ashkenazy's (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) Primaltrek / Primal Trek website define my Global 🗺 lock 🔒, as when people falsely accused me as having a supposed “conflict of interest” with Gary Ashkenazy's (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) Primaltrek / Primal Trek website I mostly wanted to have my account globally 🗺 unlocked 🔓 to defend myself against these slanderous allegations and restore the links where they had been removed as Gary Ashkenazy's (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) Primaltrek / Primal Trek website references were removed that were placed there even half (½) a decade before I started editing Chinese numismatic articles. My whole Dutch-WikipediaCareer was only kick-started to include more from Gary Ashkenazy's (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) Primaltrek / Primal Trek website on the Dutch-language Wikipedia (for example “Koreaanse yang” is “a SpiteArticle” regarding Gary Ashkenazy's (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) Primaltrek / Primal Trek website). I often only take pictures because I think of “the (relative) comparison” with Gary Ashkenazy's (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) Primaltrek / Primal Trek website. I have “Gary-light”/”Gary-lite” (A.K.A. “Primalkiight”/”Primalkight”/”Primallight”/”Primallite” articles, like those about Vietnamese cash coins and Japanese cash coins as well as Chinese paper money). I really don't know where or what my WikiCareer can do as it seems to be solely concerned with Gary Ashkenazy's (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) Primaltrek / Primal Trek website. I've already some sort of "copypasta-phase" where to create new Wikipedia articles related to Chinese cash coins and / or Chinese numismatic charms I can essentially copy and paste all the content from other Wikipedia pages as all of the content is "already here". This was only not true for coin hoards, now it is also. The real question is if I would continue to focus on Chinese numismatics or will finally put more work into Japanese and Vietnamese cash coins. As I had said before, I wanted to focus more on the Japanese cash coins as there is still a lot to explore, although most has already been covered by the Japanese-language Wikipedia, the same goes for Vietnamese cash coins. Perhaps I can dive a bit deeper into Korean numismatics, as I have no plans for Korean coin hoards anytime soon. Mostly also because China, Japan, and Vietnam are so much more easy to cover.

But this all largely brings me to my second largest project, Banknote.ws, it's enormous and won't be easy to complete, it's the only other website that will take years to fully import. It's also the largest "Post-Scott Semans" numismatic import to Wikimedia Commons, and it's also something independent of everything else, largely because of the stark differences between the study of coins and coinages and that of paper money. I can't believe that it has been on hold for so long, but at least I can say that Wikimedia is "the best website for pre-1930's Chinese numismatics" now. Although Banknote.ws still wins with paper money, but this topic is just too vast for me to invest my time in now. I can't believe how much work Chinese cash coins, Cginese numismatic charms, Chinese Bamboo Tallies, and Chinese token coins were. Chinese coin hoards was a nice finish, but a year from now I hope to have been done with all the Wikimedia Commons imports too. It's just all too much.

My WikiHeart already belongs to "The Wikimedia mirror of Gary Ashkenazy's (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) Primaltrek / Primal Trek website", this is something where the likes of Dr. Luke Roberts, John Ferguson, and Jean-Michel Moullec "are only in the backdrop of". It's difficult to move beyond something once it not only defines your WikiCareer but ESSENTIALLY IS YOUR wIKIcAREER. This is also why I am reluctant to continue. I don't know what other Chinese numismatic website to look up to now, I essentially built the largest English-language website about Chinese numismatics, it's not like Dr. Helen Wang's Chinese Money Matters will expand in a way that I cannot keep up with. It's no longer a goal 🥅 if it is something you've already achieved. There are still "minor gaps in the story of Chinese numismatics", but it's nothing that the Chinese coin hoard list can't fulfill. Now that the infrastructure is there it's very difficult to even think of any other websites getting even remotely close. The gap and investment is simply too huge. Vladimir Belyaev's Zeno Oriental Coins Database (Zeno.ru) literally has ALL THE EXPERTS, there is no competing with that. At least not now. I have attempted to recruit some more people from there, but Wikimedia Commons doesn't allow as much discussion, although in theory this website could, it requires a lot of effort to do so. Bert Lijnema is a good start, but Wikimedia Commons needs to expand enormously beyond it. It's a competition I am simply not trying to get into (yet). I will have to see how far I can go with Scott Semans World Coins (CoinCoin.com) first. It's apt to say that that import will allow for major jumps. I've essentially "filled in" some of every period in Chinese history thanks to Scott Semans World Coins (CoinCoin.com).

What I could do thanks to Scott Semans World Coins (CoinCoin.com) is essentially still minor compared to Vladimir Belyaev's Zeno Oriental Coins Database (Zeno.ru), In fact this is why I like building the infrastructure for it. Chinese cash coins on Wikimedia Commons.

Another topic that I would like to cover here is the state of Chinese cash coins on Wikimedia Commons. I got "close", but as of now I would have to call🤙🏻 it "yet another top tier competitor" to both Gary Ashkenazy's (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) Primaltrek / Primal Trek website and Lars Bo Christensen's Chinese Cash Coins website, the imports from Scott Semans World Coins (CoinCoin.com), John Ferguson's Sportstune.com website, Jean-Michel Moullec's Flickr, Etc. Do all put Wikimedia Commons quite high, but where it succeeds in some respects it lacks in others. Obviously Zeno.ru is the unchallenged top contender.

I do believe that in time Wikimedia Commons has the potential to be the top, but it will require a lot of effort from the both of us, and hopefully a lot of other people.

Now my main concern isn't the short-term game, it's in fact the long-term game. A lot of museums are publishing their works under free licenses online now, but many neglect Wikimedia Commons entirely. In fact (free) numismatic images are "scattered" all over the internet. Well, I've made it no secret that I want to try to create a "one-stop-shop for Chinese numismatics" and that Wikimedia websites have a great potential to be this platform. It's a vision I share with Dr. Helen Wang, but her Chinese Money Matters website has proven more to be a casually updated blog more than anything else at this point.

This is not to say that Dr. Helen Wang can't do this, but it's clear that her priorities lie offline. To this point I would have to say that Andrew West (BabelStone) is a great example of how we want experts to help with Wikimedia Commons. BabelStone both understands the mission of Wikimedia Commons (and helps fight copyright © violations) and the importance of making educational resources free to use. In fact, this is exactly the type of mentality we wish to inspire.

It is clear at this moment that the status of Chinese cash coins on Wikimedia Commons is currently in a good position, but it could be a lot better. There are plenty of rare and even unique types of Chinese cash coins already on Wikimedia Commons s, but as long as Mainland China 🇨🇳 itself is closed off from the rest of the world 🗺 to share both Chinese history and Chinese culture, we're probably not going to be able to document these things to the fullest possible extent.

Xun Yan's academic paper.

I have found a really valuable resource on Chinese numismatics in Xun Yan's academic paper, in fact I would go as far as to say that by integrating it into various Wikipedia articles that I could actually "beat" a fair amount of sources that even discusses the numismatic history of the Manchu Qing Dynasty. Unfortunately, it doesn't contain much images of Chinese cash coins that I am free to import to Wikimedia Commons. However, it does make me realise that while the true value for Wikipedia is in universities, the true value for Wikimedia Commons is in museums. Academic papers are great resources, but rarely for cash coin identification and categorisation, unless it directly relates to the grander narrative.

As you frequent Chinese museums I think that you could be of great value again the moment that you can visit them again. I think that at present we can probably try to use online resources more for the time being, to try to stay as safe as possible.
