Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.Pi.1415926535 (talk) 21:58, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Pi.1415926535! As you may already know, I am new to contributing to wikipedia. i am an amateur photographer that is interested in cars and trains.
- I got a new camera recently, which has motivated me to contribute to wikipedia. i'm trying to refresh the photos on the muni metro wiki page to give the pages a newer feel. I just started writing a wikipedia page on the 37 Corbett because i wanted to challenge myself and write about a muni route that i know little to nothing about. if there's some way for me to show it to you before i publish it for a check/final edits would you mind showing me how? thank you so much. - Hello! While I appreciate your enthusiasm, I would advise against choosing the 37 Corbett for your first article. Wikipedia has fairly strict guidelines about notability, and most bus routes do not meet those requirements. (The routes that do pass notability tend to be major routes like the 14 Mission that have lengthy history and high ridership.) The 37 is a minor route without a great deal of history, and you'll struggle to find enough sources. I have a fairly extensive library, and the only historical coverage I can find is a single paragraph in one book.
- My recommendation is to start with routes or other subjects that you do know a lot about - it's better to build up your research skills before tackling more ambitious topics. Similarly, it's much easier to start by editing existing articles before creating new ones, since there's lots of learn about things like adding sources and writing in the Wikipedia style. When you do start an article, you can use the draft process to work on your article and get feedback before publishing it. I'm happy to help with that - just let me know when you have a draft for me to look at. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 23:10, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
