First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Barnstars

[edit]

I noticed that you were uncertain of a Barnstar to give someone. There is nowhere on en.wikipedia (or any other project) where all the Barnstars are laid out, quite a few people have put in effort there to fix the situation, but D*heads who are jealous and aren't getting any don't want the Barnstar page to show actual barnstars or encourage people, or help find the right one for the occasion. Their jealousy is so strong they absolutely will not allow so much as a link to the motherload of Barnstars. You will not find it except as secret knowledge.

For you and those who are looking, here is the ONLY place the stars are all laid out for you to choose from. User:Penyulap/Barnstars

I really like that octopus barnstar, thanks for the collection. Dmcq (talk) 09:13, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You're quite welcome. Let me know if you want to give away am exclusive solid gold barnstar sometime, and I'll make it for you. Penyulap 17:50, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding removal of Windows 3.0 logo/icon image from Windows 3.0 article

[edit]

I would prefer to keep it there just to point out that flag logo was not yet used in 1990. Also please check the MS-DOS related article, you will see that what it displays on the top of the screenshot is also an icon which is now considered as the only graphical representation for symbol MS-DOS. On another side, while we have duplicate images as of now (in Commons and in English Wikipedia), the best solution would be to delete the second one completely and use the first. What do you think about it? Aaleksanyants (talk) 04:20, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well I see my removal as more of a vote to remove as others can always disagree with me and in this case I can't see myself as any sort of expert. If another person also disagrees with you then the weight would be against you and you'd have to discuss it on the talk page. It also seemed overlarge, much larger than the original appeared on a screen, I'd like it smaller if possible if you're sticking it back in. Dmcq (talk) 18:04, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Agree, so I changed the original size to display a 32px image on the left of Windows 3.0 text. -- Aaleksanyants (talk) 14:07, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given

[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 20:13, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
