First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Stereophotography

[edit]
Tay Road Bridge Cross-Eye 3D.jpg

Thanks for uploading your stereophotographs to Wikimedia Commons. I just wanted to let you know that you seem to have mixed up the difference between 'cross-eyed' and 'parallel' stereophotographs. The image, right, which you uploaded and described as 'cross-eye' stereo is actually a parallel stereophoto. In your image, the right eye looks at the right image, and the left eye looks at the left image: your eyes are viewing the images in parallel, hence the name. In a cross-eye image, the right eye looks at the left image, and vice versa: they cross over.

This is not a problem, but it does mean that I'm going to list your pictures to be renamed, and will recategorize them in the correct categories. Uploading pictures in parallel format is fine, since many people prefer to view them in that format. However, many people (probably the majority, judging by the volume of uploads to the Stereophotography Flickr Group) prefer to view stereophotographs 'cross-eyed'. There is no reason to replace these images with parallel versions (as you said with the photograph file:Galena 3D in Bristol Museum.jpg). Feel free to upload alternative versions as separate files, if you wish.

Apologies for the long and boring message, but I thought it sensible to explain why your images need to be renamed. NotFromUtrecht (talk) 20:39, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I assumed they were called "cross-eye" because you were supposed to cross your eyes when you looked at them.
That said, you would still be correct. What I was doing was the opposite (although I didn't realise it until I checked by photographing myself(!) and thinking about it logically). My mistake...
I find that much easier than actually crossing my eyes though. While I can do that (e.g. by looking at a finger in front of my face), the images behind it aren't in focus and my eyes un-cross as soon as I look at them. Perhaps that's just me... Disde (talk) 21:05, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
More... I was going to change your image I swapped back to its original state. But it appears that you uploaded the original version under a new name elsewhere, so I un-reverted(!) it. Sorry for any confusion caused. Disde (talk) 21:10, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
