Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:37, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

File:DanielHayesRedCarpetClose.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Licensing
[edit]Hello Designsbyd, regading e.g. File:DanielHayesRedCarpetClose.jpg: You are not allowed to upload all pics you find on the net. See COM:L first! As you are not the photographer you need written permission (free license) from the photographer. See COM:OTRS. Does he want to release his photos (which he sells on his page)? Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 03:42, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
- hi Saibo, i understand copyright issues and didn't upload a pic i found on the net. i requested and received written permission from the copyright holder to post these images and have forwarded it to be verified. also i'm not trying to step on your toes here but if i really didn't know about all this and this was my first time hearing about it, i might have been upset at your slightly pedantic tone. please remember to assume good faith. Designsbyd (talk) 04:42, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
- Hello Designsbyd, thank you for replying. Sorry for my "slightly pedantic tone". It just happens too often that people exactly do what I have written. And there was no note or anything that the photograph has agreed. To the contrary, the photographer even sells his photographs on his website.
- In the upload form there is also a field "Permission" with explanation underneath. However, I admit, easy to overlook. I linked COM:OTRS in my message here where OTRS pending is mentioned, too.
- So - the other way round - thank you for your contributions and effort and please forgive me - I try to be more friendly "next time"! :) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 02:50, 15 March 2011 (UTC)
