Kornkasten

[edit]

Hallo!

:) --Demidow 17:59, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo from Italy

[edit]

Hallo, thank you for the work you have begun to do on Italy. Since I am working at organising italy sinc at least two years ago, I would appreciate a little coordination, to avoid clashes, as those that are emerging with the fact that we are creating sort of parallele categorisations. Especially, I ask you to follow the following grammar: "Category:Nameofthe church (Town)", not "Category:Nameofthechurch in Town". I am changing little by little all of the names that are written in the second way. This is because San Casciano in Val di Pesa (official name) is nota a church to San Casciano which stands in the town of Val di Pesa, but the town of San Casciano which stands in the Pesa Valley. Furthermore, we should start a discussione about whether Architectures are "of" or "in". SOmeone at the beginning created everyting with of, but since then everybody all around the world uses "in" ie Architecture IN Paris (not "of Paris", and so on. The old categories stuck, but perhaps we should urge a vote to uniform everything. While waiting to do so, I'd appreciate a little discussion to avoid further chaos. Thank you in advance. --User:G.dallorto (talk) 02:36, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, G.dallorto! Thank you for your suggestions. You're perfectly right, setting the placenames in brackets does surely help to avoid missunderstandings. I'll try my best to change the category names I created so far to meet with the pattern you suggested above. The Architecture thing is a real problem. I'd suggest always to use the preposition "in" as this would make clear that the category includes architecture that is situated, for instance, in Italy while not necessarily being of Italian origin (I'm thinking of South Tyrol in particular). Would you be so kind to start a discussion concerning the architecture in/of matter? I'm myself not too familiar with moderating discussions.
Another thing is that the categorization "Architecture by style" and "by period" respectively suck as they cannot be applied to some of the most important buildings because they feature different styles. I have been using that catgorization system as well, but now I've come to the point to avoid it as it doesn't work with a lot of buildings. Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you and all the best for your further work here at Commons! --Demidow 07:41, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
Hallo Demidow. If a building is of two mixed styles, just put two categories with each style. It will be helpful for those looking for either style. If it is a piecemeal of several styles, then we cannot talk about a "style" so don't add any category for the style. As you see, it is simple. :-)
As for works of art "in", this is used merely for the physical, geographical location, NOT for the artistic school. Paintings of Italian style in France stay in the Category:Paintings in France, NOT in the Category:Paintings in Italy. In some cases a category "FROM Italy" was started, for those works of art of a certain origin being abroad. See for instance the difference between Category:Ancient Roman frescos in Pompeii and Category:Ancient Roman frescos from Pompeii.
No rule in WikiCommons forbids you to create a category such as [:Category:German paintings in Italy]], if you feel it is useful. Simply, it is a bit too early to sturt scha subcatgorisation, but if you feel like doing it, no one may forbid it to do it. Best wishes. --User:G.dallorto (talk) 20:54, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

San Giacomo

[edit]

Hello, San Giacomo is usually named Saint James in English, see for example en:San Giacomo. I don't know which saint is in the name of that church (Category:San Giacomo (Capizzi)), but all saints listed at it:San Giacomo have the name James in English Wikipedia. /Ö 16:36, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Ö, you're perfectly right. James, son of Zebedee is the one meant here. I'll change it back in a moment. Bye!--Demidow 16:53, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Please don't overcategorise

[edit]

Hallo, I noticed that you are not only dividing Italian churches by patron saint, which is fine, and by region, which is fine whenever it is necessary, but also by sub-name of the saint by region, such as "Santa Maria della Vittoria churches in Abruzzo". The result is that each and all of your categories have only one item inside. This is called over-categorisation. Categories are supposed to gather SEVERAL items in order to find them together, not one item each. If you create categories that are too small, none will have more than one item inside.

Please consider splitting categories into subcategories ONLY when they reach, say, 15-20 items at least. Otherwise, rather than helping the user, you make everything more complicate, since he will have to open 50 pages to find just 5 churches overall, which isn't very logical.

Beside it, please use the follow grammar: "Category:Santa Maria della Vittoria (Milan)" rather than "Santa Maria della Vittoria in Milan". "In" should be used for broader categories, such as "Churches IN Abruzzo", or "Churches IN L'Aquila" or "Gothic architecture IN Milan", whereas for single items brackets are normally used.

If we agree about how working together, there will be less work to be undone and redone in the future. Thanks in advance. --User:G.dallorto (talk) 20:43, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for your work on rearrranging categories - but please take a look at the note at User_talk:Túrelio#Careful_with_deleting_categories.21. Vmenkov (talk) 10:49, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your comments. But please keep in mind that there are two other Makaryev Monasteries in Russia, in Kostroma Oblast and in Tatarstan. Thus renaming the category was necessary to avoid confusion, and I suggest to do the same with the Wikipedia entry (very nice article by the way!). I just forgot to adjust the Wikipedia links to Commons, sorry! :) --Demidow (talk) 15:22, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Demidow,

I do not see any sense in this "one building category" (just for Ilmmünster), esp. because "Basilica" categories are generally used at wikipedia for the status of roman catholic churches (nominated by the Vatican) and not for the typus of romanesque churches (as in German history of art). When you like to introduce the category Basilicas as an achitectural type, you should rename the category to Basilicas (architecture) (see Basilica).

p.s. geht auch auf deutsch... --Ceterum censeo capitalismum esse delendum (talk) 00:57, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Danke!

Bystraya Sosna River

[edit]

Hi, is Category:Bystraya Sosna River about ru:Быстрая Сосна? If that's the case, there already is Category:Sosna River (the name based on en:Sosna River). I know there is also ru:Тихая Сосна, but I can't fix that. Erik Warmelink (talk) 21:26, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Eric! Thanks for the information. I changed the category to "Sosna River". Cheers!--Demidow (talk) 12:04, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but it only answers a part of my question. What should we do with ru:Тихая Сосна? That river is smaller, but not by a wide margin (4350 km2 versus 17400 km2). Erik Warmelink (talk) 19:33, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a reliable definition of what falls under this heading? Somehow the sources on my desk completely bypass such categorization. TIA, NVO (talk) 17:24, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Zuordnung von Kategorien "Churches in..." zur Kategorie: "Churches in Diocese of..."

[edit]

--Demidow (talk) 16:32, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Silly category moves

[edit]

If you change categories (from perfectly understandable ones to unintuitive ones, without any reason, by the way), you have to check links. Please change all the red links on Stadtmauer Nürnberg. I'm really angry that my work is mutilated by amateurs like that. --89.247.158.129 15:27, 16 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
