Hello, Daviessimo!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Geograph

[edit]

When you upload Geograph images, please use Magnus' tool. This will ensure that the image gets a meaningful name and a proper geograph tag - unlike your upload of File:1226151 1bba2c4e.jpg. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 22:13, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Did you read the above? I note File:Arnot Street School, Liverpool.jpg. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 16:50, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I did thank you. If the question you were asking was "why did you not do what I said?", well then maybe you'd care to explain how to use it when you leave a note, as I am unable to log in.
Maybe if commons was a bit more user friendly it would be easier to get everything correct the first time, but it seems you need a degree in computer science to be able to figure out which of the 1001 options is the correct one to use. I mean, how is it possible that one of the biggest free sources of images in the UK uses a commons licence which is not a selectable option when you upload an image and also does not have a link to the tool you refer to on COM:U. Unfortunately, I like many other cannot be expected to know how to upload images perfectly and you being short with me for making a mistake is not going to help --Daviessimo (talk) 10:07, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
