Underlying source of your maps?
[edit]Hi. Would you please identify the underlying source of your maps, and identify that the source is either freely licensed or public domain. Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 09:05, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
Hi, all maps are original cartography by myself. I have been producing maps for 50 years, and maps with Adobe Illustrator for 25 years. The base map of Europe is a mosaic-like composition using my own conical projection (equivalent to Lambert) and then filling with contents drawn from countless different sources, then adapting and distorting as necessary to get it all to fit in. This is artisanal map-making. Three styles of map have been posted in my recent trawl of French waterways pages: initially I used maps that were produced and tailored for my book Inland Waterways of France, published by Imray. Since you do not have evidence of authorisation by Imray to use them in this way, could you give me just a little time to replace them with maps in the 2nd category or 3rd category? 2nd category: extracts from my European Waterways Map and Directory, 5th edition, publ. Transmanche, but extracts that are reworked for the purpose of the article (highlighting the waterway concerned). 3rd category, from a smaller-scale, general base map, specially-designed maps to show networks or parts of networks. These are placed respecting the Wikipedia Commons rules, which means that they are freely licensed to those who wish to use them in the format supplied. Not huge resolution, and not svg files that could be exploited indiscriminately. So I'm happy to do this, in reasonable expectation of recognition and some map sales, down the line… David-waterways (talk) 09:27, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
- Hi David-waterways. Thanks for the reply, your cartographic skills are impressive. I think that the best way to manage this is through the OTRS process, where we have an authoritative and validated process to link you, your copyrighted work, and the license that you are applying to the work, with your uploads. It is a more robust process. If you are looking to replace images, then there is of course time to undertake that. Thanks for the reply. — billinghurst sDrewth 22:44, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Marne-Rhine Canal location.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Marne-Rhine Canal location.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |
