[edit]Samaritans map
[edit]Are you aware that the Samaritans are organised in the United Kingdom? --82.7.97.175 06:44, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
category vs. gallery
[edit]hi,

The scan before whitening seems like nearby.
Both digits are eight, I think, they rather did not use "slashed zeros" in 19th century. But - I am not sure. Julo 09:18, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the effort. I know that "slashed zero" is not the exactly right term, but stylized zeros did already exist centuries before the computer age in various cultures. Anyway, it doesn't matter, since I looked even closer at the type and found several clear indications that the caption wasn't typesetted at all but hand-written. The last digit of the date 185x in fact does look like an overlay of 8 and 0 at 800% zoom, it surely doesn't look like a clear 8 or clear 0 alone. Possibly a writing mistake was corrected? The question is, which digit was the wrong one? I think looking at the digits alone will not help on this, as it is too low-res. So I started to inspect the map at an historical angle.
- Some things that occured to me were: First, the map does not name any of vienna's districts at all. The first eight districts were created in 1850. This was a pretty significant development. How likely is it that the map makers wouldn't have been aware of this by 1858? Second, just nearby the Neustadt channel, the map features a military base of the lombardo-venecian guard. However, this military guard already left said spot in late 1849; in 1850 the then-famous Militär-Reitlehrer-Institut (military riding instructor's school) was founded at this very place. How come the map makers didn't notice this for a period of eight years? Third , the Neustadt Canal is still shown as intact. This channel was abandoned in the 1850ies in favor of building the Schnellbahn railway. In Oct. 1857, one specific track part, "Hauptzollamt (Wien Mitte) - Südbahnhof" was opened, which is pretty unique in that it is located directly in the former channel's riverbed. Why does the map fail to reflect this? I will try to inspect other parts of the map later, I guess I'll find other signs indicating that the map does not accurately show Vienna in 1858. However, this will take some time. I think the very least one should do is add an image description to the map, stating that the last year-digit isn't doubtlessly legible... Apart from this, the map itself is really valuable, thanks for uploading it! --Contributor 16:33, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Your account will be renamed
[edit]Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Contributor. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Contributor~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
