Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Thank you for reaching out regarding File: A History of Uganda.jpg. I appreciate your diligence in ensuring that proper permissions are in place for uploaded media. However, I would like to clarify the context of my upload in relation to the EveryBookItsReader 2023 campaign.

I uploaded this image as part of my contribution to the campaign, which encourages librarians, publishers, authors, and book enthusiasts to add books, literary works, and oral stories to Wikimedia projects. The primary goal of this campaign is to promote literature and literary works, as indicated in the campaign tasks outlined on the campaign page (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/EveryBooksItsReader_2023/Participate).

I understand the importance of compliance with Wikimedia Foundation' policies and the need for proper permissions, when uploading photographs. Please be assured that I did not claim the image as my own work, but rather, it was uploaded as part of a collaborative effort within the scope of this campaign.

If there are any additional steps or information required to satisfy Wikimedia Commons' requirements, I am more than willing to cooperate to ensure that my contributions align with the Foundation's objectives.

These images, and several others have been uploaded as part of my contribution to an event that was organized on Saturday, January 13th 2024 by GLAM-Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda (WMUGU) and The Uganda Society.

The Uganda society founded in 1923, is the oldest literary, cultural, and scientific society in Uganda. It will be celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and the event was organized with the aim of honoring this significant milestone by calling Volunteers like myself, to contribute information on its past leaders, publications, and images to Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons.

I understand the importance of compliance with Wikimedia Foundation' policies and the need for proper permissions, when uploading photographs. Please be assured that all the images am uploading are part of a collaborative effort within the scope of this event/campaign.

Hi Cn22760, you have uploaded a number of images, which are reproductions of photographies. As long as you have not proven that the underlying photos are in the public domain or have been released by their photographers under a free license, you cannot publish your images under a free license, as this violates the copyright of the original photographers. So, you first need to identify the photographers and check whether they died already 70 years ago or not. Also, you need to write their name(s) into the author-field, as a reproduction is ot really a creative act. Finally, you should not put the date of your reproduction into the date-field, but the year of the original photography. --Túrelio (talk) 09:26, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think the issue here is the license; which can be fixed. If we have to change the license and attribution, we will do it. Because deleting the photographs will derail the entire project.

Secondly, we actually do not have the dates when these photographs were taken. All the photographs belong to the Uganda society; they donated them to us specifically for this project.

But here's what I take from this:

When you're reproducing photographs, you must:

1. Prove that the underlying photos are in the public domain or have been released under a free license.

2. Identify the photographers and check whether they died 70 years ago or not.

3. Write their names into the author field, as reproduction is not really a creative art.

4. Do not put the date of your reproduction into the date field, but the year of original photography.
