Categories

[edit]

Hello Chris! I see that you have started to upload some new pictures. Very nice! :) Now it's time for you to learn a bit more about putting them in the right categories. I have fixed the categories on your recent uploads. Take a look at them and see what you can learn from that. For example: You should not put a lapis lazuli in just the huge Category:Gemstones, where it will get lost. It belongs in Category:Lapis lazuli. The pictures of quartz are now in Category:Quartz, but they should really be moved to a more definite category there, like Category:Rock crystal, but since I did not know exactly what kind of quartz it was due to the colored light, I could not be more precise. Also, when a gemstone is tinted by the light the way these samples appears to be, you should write that in the description of the file as well as note the original color of the stone so that other editors don't get confused by it. Such artistic photos are very nice, but of little use in an encyclopedia if all info is not present.

You did make an effort with the picures from Italy, but you should have noted that the category that you provided "Pisa, Italy" was in red, meaning that it did not exist. You can search for the right category by just writing what is in the photo in the search box here. This will give you examples of other similar photos and you can then see what the categories they are in are called. Doing just that, I found the Category:Leaning Tower (Pisa), Italy is a redundant category since "Pisa" is already a subcategory to it, and Category:Piazza dei Miracoli (Pisa).

If your photos are not in the right category, no one will be able to find them and they will not be used. Just ask me, same as always, if there is something you don't understand. I have a page here on Commons as well. w.carter-Talk 22:06, 6 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dear W.carter, I was really glad to hear from you. Great thanks for your advices - this weekend I will correct all errors in regards of categories and descriptions of the photos. And you are right: both quartz pieces are transparent and nearly colourless, more precisely only one of them has slight yellowish tint. I used in both cases absolutely white light and was surprised myself how deeply this yellowish colour has increased. How should I put it in the description? Thank you very much again, that you have noticed my works and have taken effort to improve them. Will keep in touch. Regards, Chris Oxford.Chris Oxford (talk) 22:04, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You are always a good "student" so it is nice to work with you and see how you improve. :) The descriptions here don't have to have an academic quality, you just write so that people understand what is going on in the picture. It's a bit easier than at the Wikipedia. Yes, it's amazing how light that we think is all white can get a totally different color in a photo!
I suggest you write something like what you just told me here, like: "Quartz from Minas Gerais, Brasil. The quartz is transparent and nearly colorless only with a slight yellow tint, photographed in studio light/daylight/bulb light (choose which is most appropriate) on a white (?) background."
Looking forward to see more of your pictures. They are very nice! :) w.carter-Talk 22:41, 7 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Good morning W.carter, Thank you very much and it was good to hear, that you like these photos. Hope, that during this weekend this particular job will be completed correctly. All the best. Will keep in touch. Chris Oxford. Chris Oxford (talk) 07:56, 8 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination

[edit]

Hello! As you see I have been meddling in your things again. I started up your user page here and moved your gallery here where it belongs. This is really where you keep your pics, the Wikipedia is for articles and a few samples of your pics. I suggest you remove most of the pics from your gallery at Wikipedia and only display a few of the best there.

Anyway, I did this so that I could nominate one of your pictures, File:Pegasus - the symbol of New Corinth.jpg for Quality Image. I think it has a good chance of getting promoted. But to do so it looked best if you had a page here. I also fixed up the summary on the image's page. If you look, there is now more info and also a camera location, which is a must for most quality image nominations. You can see the nomination here: Commons:Quality images candidates/candidate list#July 10, 2016. There are a couple of your pics that could have been eligible for nominations, but unfortunately they have some technical problems.

I just thought it would be nice for you to see how things work here at the Commons as well. Also, good work on adding categories to your new photos! Very good! Best, w.carter-Talk 09:53, 10 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

See? You got your first approval. :) Now if no one objects, you will get a message similar to those on my talk page in a day or two and your file will get a QI stamp on it. w.carter-Talk 11:54, 10 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dear W.carter,

I was so much surprised and delighted, that you found my Pegasus, as a suitable candidature for this photo contest. It feels really good, if your efforts are noted. Thank you very much. And my new page in Wikimedia is just a best present — great thanks. Following to your advises, I’m becoming more and more confident, when I’m approaching Wikipedia, and now I realized, how much means here the right attitude and knowledge of all tools and rules, as it = quality. Now, when I see a sloppy finished article, that “hurts the eye”, you can say, professionally, despite the fact, that for me the way to a professional Editor, is as long, as for a sailor to a captain, but I already can “orientate in the ocean”. I have a couple of new ideas and will be glad to return to you, as soon, as I will examine the matter in details. Great thanks again. All the best. Regards, Chris Oxford.

P.S.

Just got your message about approval, what an amazing surprise! We will see what happens next. Just wow! Chris Oxford (talk) 15:12, 10 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Very good morning W.carter, Today going to work and for other business riding on a Pegasus. Feels fantastic. Will be back soon. Regards, Chris Oxford.Chris Oxford (talk) 08:08, 13 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dear W.carter, I believe, I cannot open your last message, sent 12 hours ago. If it is possible, please, send it again. Regards, Chris Oxford.Chris Oxford (talk) 20:36, 13 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chris! That was not a message, it was just a "thank you" for your comment, there is nothing to open. I was in a hurry and only had time to send a "Thank You". When you get such a note, it will only direct you to which message someone is thanking you for. It is also used as a short kind of way to say "I saw your message, thanks for letting me know" or something like that. But now I have time to congratulate you properly. Hopefully you will create more pics that are worthy of the Quality Image stamp. w.carter-Talk 20:48, 13 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Quality Image Promotion

[edit]
Your image has been reviewed and promoted

Congratulations! Pegasus - the symbol of New Corinth.jpg, which was produced by you, was reviewed and has now been promoted to Quality Image status.

If you would like to nominate another image, please do so at Quality images candidates.

We also invite you to take part in the categorization of recently promoted quality images.
Comments Ok, maybe would be have been better though to place the pegasus on the right of the composition --Poco a poco 11:11, 10 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
