You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Copyright violations[edit]

All of your uploads so far have been blatant copyright violations, save one that is probably a violation (see the Deletion Request). Claiming that something is you own work when you lifted it from somewhere else on the Web is incorrect and a serious violation of our rules. If you make similar uploads again, you will be blocked from editing on Commons.

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, but one or more administrators has reviewed and declined this request. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked. Other administrators can also review this block, but should not override the decision without discussion.

Request reason: "I wish someone would teach me how to properly upload images to commons. I wasn't doing it for malicious purposes. All the copyright policies confuse me. I looked at other uploads and realized they had a "fair use rationale" so I tried putting that on my newer uploads but those were still deleted and I was still blocked. Then I read the policy and it said Commons doesn't accept fair use. If so why do all the files have fair uses rationales?? I just don't get it. The website I took them from granted permission based on their terms of use. I wish someone could teach me how to properly upload things."

Comment First, none of the images that I deleted came from sites that have any indication of free use. For example, Skyscraperpage.com has an explicit copyright notice and instructions for obtaining a commercial license so I am not sure where you get:

"The website I took them from granted permission based on their terms of use."

As for Fair Use, it is permitted on WP:EN and some of the other WPs. Fair Use works only on a case by case basis, so it is not acceptable on Commons because Commons images must be available for any use, not just those that would qualify for Fair Use.

When I was talking about "The website I took them from granted permission based on their terms of use" I meant WTC.com... I read their terms of use which said for "non-commercial and personal use" and by non-commercial they mean you aren't trying to sell their product.

I'll admit, at first I thought I could get around the copyright thing by pasting pictures on Paint, then tweaking them slightly so I could claim it was my own work. When I realized that didn't work, I made an honest attempt at trying to upload pictures that didn't violate copyright regulations. Apparently I didn't do it right because those pictures were still deleted and I was still blocked. There's no use in me trying to violate the rules again so you may as well unblock me so I can try to learn how to properly do this. When, if ever, is the block supposed to expire?

Unfortunately Commons requires that images be available for all use, including commercial use, so the WTC.com permission is not sufficient either.

The block will run out next Monday. I suggest that in the interim, you find one or two images you would like to upload and put links to them here -- I'll look at them and see how you're doing with our policies. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 10:41, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, but this was clearly a copyright violation and I have deleted it on sight. It was an artist's rendition of the way that the new WTC will look. It should be obvious that it has a copyright and that without the artist's permission, one way or another, we cannot keep it here.

The version on WP:EN, which you cropped, is there under a Fair use rationale. Commons never accepts fair use for the simple reason that since Commons is only a repository there is no necessity to have any particular image here, and therefore no way to justify it under fair use. As is explained more fully at Commons:Fair use many (but not all) Wikipedias do accept fair use as a reason to keep an image under proper circumstances. Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
