Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:41, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Regarding Bloody Sunday image
[edit]Hello,
How did you get such a large image for File:Post_Office_1938.jpg? I looked it up in the VPL database and it is much smaller.
Thank you. InverseHypercube (talk) 08:06, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
I took a photo of the image in a book that used it, though it was so long ago now that I can't remember which one.
- Ah, thank you. Great images! InverseHypercube (talk) 17:42, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
- I also wanted to ask you about File:Battle of Ballantyn Pier.jpg; do you know for a fact that it is depicting the Battle of Ballantyne Pier? It doesn't suggest this in the VPL database.
- I'm 95% sure. It fits with all the descriptions & newspaper coverage I've read, and doesn't fit with any other protests/police actions from this period that I know of. It's also doubtful the unemployed would have had a protest at Ballantyne Pier, as the vpl descriptor says (those things often contain errors). I've also seen this image illustrating the event in a book.
- Thank you, I will add this information. InverseHypercube (talk) 21:34, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

- Also, if you're interested (and live near Vancouver), there's going to be a meetup at the Central Lbrary on October 23. InverseHypercube (talk) 00:15, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
