Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Unblock request granted

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, and one or more administrators has reviewed and granted this request.

Request reason: "I am a dedicated user with over 15 years of experience and over 35,000 contributions to Wikimedia projects. I am very passionate about Wikipedia and in editing articles, which is one of my greatest pleasures. Proof of this is that I have created 90 articles on the English Wikipedia, of which 8 are B-status and 3 are GA-status. In addition, I have taken 5 pre-existing articles to this level and was recognized with the "Awesome Wikipedian" distinction. Most of my edits have been in good faith and the hundreds of images I uploaded to Wikimedia Commons sought to improve the articles visually, always with the intention of respecting licenses. Regarding the use of post-1971 Argentine photos, I followed a common practice among other Argentine users and believed it was allowed because they are treated as public domain in my home country. I commit myself from now on not to upload any Argentine photo that is not in the public domain in 1996 at URAA time. In the specific cases of File:Granda cantante.jpg and File:Rosario, periodista.jpeg, the photos were provided to me by Josué Ricardo Rivas, who claimed to be the intellectual owner of them. I suggested to him, for his own ease, to create his own account in Flickr but, after the file's deletion and my banning, I asked him to please make the consensus statement for the VRT. I decided to wait for confirmation of his email to make my appeal, but after no response from Rivas I decided to write this text. Editing Wikipedia is my biggest hobby and a very important activity for me and I will continue contributing in the right way if you please let me.Bleff (talk) 03:16, 24 July 2024 (UTC)"[reply]

There was a case, where a user was indefinitely blocked in en.wiki and bureaucrat in Commons – why not vice versa?
