Duplicates and categorization
[edit]Hi, thanks for notifying me about your improvements to BHL images. There's no problem with deleting duplicates such as File:Histoire physique, politique et naturelle de l'ile de Cuba (Tab. 4) (5984805204).jpg. The smaller version from Flickr is probably inferior, though it can be noted that when the two versions are compared side by side, it is obvious that though the scans are the same, the version for Flickr has introduced a slight colour shift from the BHL version (I've not analysed this any further, so not sure why). At some point I'll be revisiting the JPEG2000 versions in the archives, and seeing if we can generate higher quality lossless png versions; though this is a little project I've been pondering for a long time and will need to revisit tests I ran at the end of last year. If this works, then the BHL and other collections might go through a little shake up, but I'll try to inherit any value-added work such as categorization or past deletions of superfluous pages.
There is an issue with the large number of non-existent categories you have added to File:Histoire physique, politique et naturelle de l'ile de Cuba (Tab. 13) BHL34893038.jpg. The relevant policy is COM:Category, see the overcategorization problem section. You appear to have added the taxonomy tree for the different creatures, rather than just the lowest level. For example, Category:Insecta is far too high a level for the image. I'm unsure if you are attempting to mass automate the categorization, but it is worth finding a way of trimming the list down.
By the way, if you want my attention on Commons, don't forget to ping me (like @Fæ: ) as my watchlist is ridiculously large and I'll miss talk page replies.
