Antinous Braschi

[edit]

Hi! There appears to be at least to statues of Antinous from the Braschi collection, one now in the Louvre (see the museum's caption) and the other in the Sala Rotunda of the Vatican Museums. That's a bit of a problem. Perhaps we should refrain from using collection names and stick to the deity Antinous is assimilated to—Herakles in one case, Dionysos in the other? Hi Jastrow! The Antinous in the Vatican is the "Antinous Braschi". The Antinous in the Louvre is not. However, they are both from the Braschi Collection. When the French removed artworks from Italy, the Vatican statue was never sent. The other made it all the way to Paris. But because it was from the Braschi collection, it was confused with the real "Antinous Braschi". A few older sources perpetuate the misconception, but modern sources are correct.
Are you the organizer of the gallery? To be honest, I prefer to organize based on the location of the artwork (the city and museum/institution where it can be found). Only a few sculptures have collection/common names, and not all of them are assimilations of deities. So you end up with a few sections for assimilations, and a non-assimilated Antinous section with dozens of sculptures simply titled "Antinous" (especially busts). The number of works in that section is way out of proportion to the other sections. It is much easier to group based on location. But that's just my preference, and I would never try to undo work that has already been done.
If you need any help, I have tons of modern resources. Biglovinb (talk) 01:02, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I will need to rename my pics and the category. About the gallery, I was the organiser at the time. Your suggestion seems good. Do you mind if I take it to the gallery's talk page? Jastrow (Λέγετε) 17:39, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
