HMS Campania
[edit]Hi, in Image:HMS Campania (1914) sinking.jpg, you described Campania as having been rammed by HMS Revenge. I believe this information may have come from the Imperial War Museum website. If so, you might be interested to know that it is in fact incorrect – Campania was rammed by no vessel, but broke free from her moorings during a storm in the Firth of Forth. She collided, not with Revenge, but with HMS Royal Oak. Royal Oak was a Revenge-class battleship, so I wonder if this where the confusion came from. Campania then scraped the side of Glorious, before later sinking. The story is readable in detail from the official report held at the National Archives Office, Kew. If you are willing to supply an e-mail address, I can e-mail you a photocopy of Royal Oak's log book for that day, describing the sequence of events. Regards, BillC 17:34, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Image deletion warning | Image:HMS_Queen.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

Je pense qu'on peut supprimer ce fichier-ci et retenir "HMS Queen (D19).jpg", qui est une copie exacte. :)

- Okay - as long as you're confident that the IWM is really releasing it as PD and can point to a statement to that effect. I don't know their policies, but only know that some sources will label images as "public" without them being truly free as in Commons:Licensing. --Davepape 19:26, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
- authorname is the template I prefer for such a case, along with a link to the appropriate info on the source site. --Davepape 02:23, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
IWM images and copyright
[edit]Just because an image is available there and has a prolly "german official photograph" as author/license information does not mage this image legally available for use/reuse here. With unknown auther it's not usable at all unless it's from pre-1900 (it's almost sure that these image are old enough to be PD-old). In case of the Bismarck/Prinz Eugen photos the photographer is of german origin so a death of author + 70 years regulation counts (and not what IWM believes).--Denniss 19:35, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
- I had to revert again. The only person able to release images (or other copyrightable works) under a specific license is the original author. So no author = no PD unless PD because of age. These images best qualify as fair use and you have to upload them to the english wikipedia if you want to use them here. --Denniss 20:56, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 08:14, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Your account will be renamed
[edit]Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Benea. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Benea~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
Community Liaison, Wikimedia Foundation
