First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Errors in transfers

Hi!

I just noticed that the files you transfer get a broken description page. Example File:Harold_Baines_1986.JPG. It has a lot of #'s. I have recreated the information with http://toolserver.org/~magnus/commonshelper.php [3].

I do not know what the problem is but you should not move more files untill the problem is fixed. Perhaps you could usee http://toolserver.org/~magnus/commonshelper.php instead. We can also transfer the files for you if you just give us a list or a category to move. Given the circumstances, I wear this as a badge of honor. :) As regards the allegations of incompetence on the part of Commons operators... My answer is these two words: Alexander Liptak. I don't know who Alexander Liptak is. I will remind you however that deletion requests are forums for community discussion when you're not sure about whether something should be deleted. If someone is certain an image needs to be deleted, they will either tag for speedy deletion, or do it themselves if they're an admin. If the deletionist had bothered to look into it, he wouldn't be unsure - but of course taking the time to do that would interfere with his need to delete stuff, and that's par for the deletionist course. And if you don't know who Xanderliptak is, maybe you could bother to look into that also. He abused commons for a year and then bullied them into getting his way, by issuing bogus legal threats to the clueless "leaders" of commons. Once that happened, I concluded that the leaders of commons were incompetent morons. I haven't seen any evidence since then to challenge that conclusion. Why I continue giving you my personal photos from time to time is anybody's guess - maybe it's because I think they might be useful in wikipedia. Aw, BB, while standing for excellence is honorable, and sometimes you may get blocked for it -- I certainly know that! -- blocks themselves are just blocks, some are for good cause, some not, but they all have the same effect and all have the same real cause: some admin was moved to push the button.
I suggest that there may be a bit of "attitude" behind the application of that quote. Is your goal to "get to" people, i.e., to irritate them? I can tell you that it's very tempting to blame project problems on "them." You know, the "bad people." The logical consequence will be that you will be relieved of the burden of editing the project involved, after all, we would not want to force you to associate with "bad people." Wouldn't that be cruel?
It took me years to figure out that I was beating my head against the wall with Wikipedia, but the problem there is not "bad people," it is defective structure that creates roles that people play, roles that are incompatible with the goals of the project. I've been blocked many times, and about half the blocks were at least reasonable. When banned, I started socking, of course, and the ordinary blocks were fine, they were expected and consistent with policy, even though the edits themselves were harmless or better (as shown by how they were subsequently handled, often). Range blocks, an edit filter to prevent me from self-identifying when self-reverting (simplifying ban enforcement) which then caused more collateral damage, and even revision deletion for harmless or even positively helpful edits, those were not fine, they violated policy, not just the guideline w:WP:RBI. But everyone makes mistakes. Big deal. I'm having more fun on Wikiversity than you can imagine.

You were right, of course. It is rather hypocritical that the people saying the older images don't prove permission but are allowing recent porn pictures shows that there is a gap in rationale and reason. Ww2 claims that there is a burden of proof on the uploader, but there are literally thousands of images of different women taken from flickr galleries that can't possibly be the person who owns the gallery nor proof of any ownership. Your statement of these not being found anywhere is far more proof than what passes around her.

Is it any less hypocritical, nonsensible, brutal, and illogical than any other project? Here you have all people as "equals", which means that those who would not deserve to have power have power. Then you strip away having to face another person and recognize their humanity, and the anonymity inspires words and actions that people would be unwilling to have characterize them irl. The ganging up on others, the inability to recognize that someone may have a point, etc., is no different than barbarians or of a culture that lacks culture. Sure, there is a claim of "civility", but more often than not it is used as a weapon in the most incivil way to justify actions that would be unacceptable irl. It is a word of censorship and abuse, instead of a word of peace and calm. Of course, when "love" is redefined as sex, and porn is the dominant marker of this culture, then there is no ability to truly appropriate another person with dignity and respect. The only exceptions are those you consider part of your "group", which emphasizes the barbarity even more.
You pointed out a problem. You were rightfully upset, and others should have been upset. You made a strong case. Of course you were ignored, then blocked, then pushed to the side. Such behavior is the disease of the internet. People throw around claims of incivility, unability to cooperate with others, and the such, but those same people are unwilling to or unable to truly love another human being. If they were, they would be unable to act in the way they do and find that pushing anyone to the fringe, ignoring them, etc, is something truly unacceptable. It is kinda sad that there are more people who ask for sympathy to be given to murders than there are who ask for sympathy for a person who merely upsets the wrong person on the internet. Its a derivative image which is a picture of a picture that someone else created for the Municipal stadium...and the flickr owner than took. The flickr license should have neen ARR. That other person would have the rights. I had the same problem once: I took a picture of a picture in a museum of a photograph (of a modern 1990's singer) that someone took...and I received this DR notice that the first photographer owned the rights. I just infringed on his/her rights by taking the photo, assuming I owned the rights and licensing it freely. So my upload was deleted after 7 days. Thank you for your submission of File:Antenna tree.jpg. While all submissions are useful, do you think you might be able to supply a better quality version of the same, or similar, content? In many cases, the largest and highest resolution possible is the most useful version to have available. (MediaWiki has automatic resizing functionality, so there is no need for multiple versions of the same image at different sizes, users can select any size and the software will generate and cache the needed resolution on the fly.)

If you can supply the same exact image as File:Antenna tree.jpg at a larger resolution (or media at a higher bitrate, etc.), please just upload it over the original, users will get the new higher quality version with no further effort on your part. If on the other hand, the content is only similar, it is best to select a new image name, as there may be uses already where some aspect of the existing media was key to the usage. In the latter case, if you can provide a crosslink reference to the new image in the older one and vice versa, that will be extremely helpful.

I said that because filing a DCMA takedown involves swearing in a copyright case (thus federal law) that something was used without your permission when you know that it went there because you put it there; that's obviously perjury, which is a federal offense if committed in a setting where federal law applies. Presumably because nobody particularly cared about the images enough to file a counterclaim. You've still broken the law if you swear falsely under oath, regardless of whether you get caught. If I remember rightly, X's images were poor-quality coats of arms, which are substantially easier to replace than good-quality photos of sportsmen in action; as such, we had a lot less to lose and a lot less reason to file a counterclaim.
