First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Stolen from http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/contributor/1800357379/photo/570617, if you continue to upload images taken from random websites and claim authorship and free licensing on them you will be blocked. I'm just uploading photos for people to see what they want to see. what's wrong with that?

That's not an unblock request, because it not gives any reason to unblock. I removed your {{Unblock}} to not vaste your chance with a claim showing only, that you not understood the very basics of the project. This is a en:free content project, you can not simply steal other peoples photographs and claim them your "own work" - that's what you did! You have to create your own photographs. I hereby unblock you to give you a chance but I need you to understand the Licensing policy. Linking to where you got it from is an improvement but it is not enough. If the source link is not under a free license then it will still be deleted. Simply put: The image needs to be licensed at the source under a free license. So, to quote Commons:Licensing: "Wikimedia Commons accepts only free content, that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, anytime, for any purpose.". –Krinkle^talk 20:52, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is a free content project, images uplaoded here MUST be free to reuse by everyone, any time, anywhere for every purpose including modification and money making purposes by the copyright holders wish. Do not upload something, if the copyright holder not expressed their wish, that everyone reuses his for freely. That means: 99,9% of the images from the internet are not ok to upload. --Martin H.
