The hard redirect is still necessary

[edit]

For instance, Category:23rd Street, New York City redirects to Category:23rd Street (Manhattan). If I put "Category:23rd Street" in the search box, I get a list of possible categories, headed by Category:23rd Street, New York City. So far, so good. However, if I click on Category:23rd Street, New York City, and it doesn't have a hard redirect, I get sent directly to the "New York City" page and not to the "Manhattan" page. To go there, I have to click on the category redirect. If, however, the "New York City" category has a hard redirect, then when I click on it from the list of possible categories, I am sent directly to the "Manhattan" page, which is where I want to be. The problem is that the category redirect is too soft to send me there.

Given this, I have rolled back your changes. Please stop going through from contributions and removing hard redirects, which are beneficial to the Commons user, and have no downside whatsoever. Thanks. Beyond My Ken (talk) 22:59, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

First off, this is different than the prior explanation of a problem between Hot-cat and Cat-a-lot. You never replied on your talk page when I asked what the difficultly was. If the hard redirects ARE useful (which you have demonstrated they are, albeit just now) then there is a reason to leave them in place. Secondly, I did not go through your contribs - I pulled a list of all hard-redirects from Category:Category redirects. If all them where created by you, that's purely coincidental.
Thank you for your explanation. I will leave hard redirects in place, given this use. sısɐuuǝɔıʌ∀ (diskuto) 23:07, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't answer because I didn't have the time needed to do the testing. The problems I was seeing before with HotCat and Cat-a-Lot may have been fixed, or perhaps I just didn't correctly re-create the circumstances, but in any case I was about to let your changes stand when the other thing popped up as a problem - whether it's something new, or just something I hadn't noticed before, I don't know. File:Structure of THC.gif has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Help requested (bot)

[edit]

Hi Avicennasis, we need your kind help with this request. The interested cluster of images is the most important donation from a famous photographer. Thank you! --Marco Chemello (BEIC) (talk) 09:59, 30 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately your bot is not targeting the right categories: the categories that must be moved to descriptions contains points (".") to separate words (not "-"). Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. Thank you again. --Marco Chemello (BEIC) (talk) 22:29, 31 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

AvicBot

[edit]

Hi Avicennasis, maybe there is a reason I don't see of realtime mirroring category content on your user pages. Best, --Achim (talk) 20:27, 26 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Achim55: Unlike categories, the user pages provide a running history of the pages after they are deleted. sısɐuuǝɔıʌ∀ (diskuto) 23:18, 26 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
To be honest, this and other pages are pretty annoying, since I always get a warning that a file is still in use when deleting it, so I always have to manually check, whether that is really the case. Sebari – aka Srittau (talk) 02:08, 2 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Srittau: A fair point. I've updated the script to list but not link. Let me know if it causes any more problems. sısɐuuǝɔıʌ∀ (diskuto) 04:39, 2 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Double Redirects

[edit]

Hello, this is somehting I processed for over a decade now. Are you taking over this task on all wikis? If so I can stop running my bot. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 23:02, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

@とある白い猫: AvicBot doesn't run on all wikis just yet. That's the end goal, but it's a long ways off right now. sısɐuuǝɔıʌ∀ (diskuto) 04:03, 17 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Why is that taking time? It is fairly easy to run it on every wiki. I guess the tricky part is seeking approvals locally on each wiki. I do have local approval if you want me to process this task instead. I can run it on the same server cluster as you if you wish. I can guarantee you, no one thanks you for running this service. It won't win friends. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 10:40, 17 January 2017 (UTC)

Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
