Hi, are you Gath Dittrick? If not, you need to provide his written permission. --Túrelio (talk) 16:39, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
While I am not Garth Dittrick, I am his son Brock Dittrick and the painting that I uploaded was painted for me. So, I am the owner and therefore the copyright owner as well.
If by some reason that this is not allowed, please let me know. Many Thanks,
- Hi Brock, thanks for your uploads and for your reply. Hoping that you mind too much about the following and don't take is as mistrust, but we do need some confirmation. Ownership of a work of art usually does not include a transfer of copyright. So, if I legally owned a painting of your father, I could not legally make a photo and sell it or even release it under a free license. That would violate your father's copyright.
- In case your father has already died and you are his first heir, then his copyright (as being the original artist) is automatically transferred to you, IANAL. However, as the image is still copyrighted (til 70 years after death of the artist) and as anybody might open an account User:Austina55 or even User:BrockDittrick, you should send some evidence to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org showing/suggesting that you are indeed the son/heir of Gath Dittrick.
- In case your father is still living, you do need his permission. Please go to Commons:Email templates, copy the boxed "Declaration of consent for all inquiries", enter the name of the image file (or the complete URL) plus the name of the license of choice and ask your father to put the date and his name under it and to mail it back to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org from an email address clearly associated with Garth Dittrick.
- For your information, anything sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org is handled confidentially by our OTRS volunteers. Only they can read it. The content will not be made public. --Túrelio (talk) 19:29, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:15, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
