First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Nabucodonosor Nebuchadnezzar Babylonian Chronicle.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. gildemax 18:55, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikipedia user, link to the person's local user page.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files here: Gallery

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

Please add as much information as possible. Thanks --gildemax 18:55, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

licence

[edit]

Hello, I see you uploaded a number of images from www.livius.org. There is a problem: The authors clearly state that they do not allow distribution of their images for a fee ([http://www.livius.org/mail2.html see here). The Commons and Wikipedia however only accept images with a free licence, meaning that they may be used also commercially, i. e. for a fee. What happened is that you thus published the images illegally under a licence against the declared will of the authors – quite understandably, though, since the authors seem to licence their images to Wikipedia on the given page. They don't really, for say they forbid commercial use also for Wikipedia images, effectively forbidding Wikipedia use.

Image:Cyrus Cylinder.png

[edit]

You've been abusively reporting an OTRS number to complete a false permission on the image Cyrus Cylinder.png. Such process is pretty disgracious and dishonest. I've negociated this permission concerning other pictures, and can't accept that suspicion could be applied to my work because of your corrupted manners. Pentocelo 11:14, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

From what I can see in your gallery, you've repeated the same thing with many of your pictures: Image:Tresury relief.JPG , Image:Cyrus cilinder s.jpg , Image:Kerei Lycian Inscription.PNG , Image:Xanthos river.JPG , Image:Apadana-treasury-persepolis-relief.jpg . I've edited their license and supressed the mention of the OTRS Pentocelo 11:18, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Amizzoni, I accept your apologies, and understand you hadn't such bad intentions. Therefore, I am sincerely sorry to see things going this way and don't want to be responsible of your departure. From what I can understand, you have problems with the licensing of the pictures you load, while no problem is impossible to solve. I'll drop you a message on your spanish board in order to bring you a solution that could avoid your departure. Hoping we could solve things positively. OTRS procedure

[edit]

Thx for doing me such favor, by having acepted my friendly cooperation. See below the steps that you must follow. Pentocelo 07:42, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Step 1:

[edit]

✓ Done Ensure the pictures are preserved from any deletion request. It consists in editing fast the pictures, applying a warning message on all those concerned. Such message must say that an OTRS process is running, and must ask any visiting admin not to delete the picture before the OTRS permission is completed. I'll do it now on the concerned livius pictures. (except Cyrus cylinder.png as I couldn't find it in Livius, but anyway, as there is another picture (a better one), there will be no loss deleting it.Pentocelo 08:09, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Step 2:

[edit]

✓ Done Sending the mail to Jona Lendering. The mail must be clear: identifying the pictures and livius pages where they were loaded from. It must contain your real name, mail, and adress. It must also express clearly the conditions (sources applied to the pictures and wikipedia pages, authorship, added mentions). Detail that the agreement answer must be expressed by backmail, including a copy of the initial demand, andmust expressively accept the GFDL. See below, The model I have sent for all my OTRS procedure, and that I have just sent to Jona Lendering concerning your pictures:

  • Mail From X, To Mr Jona Lendering (Iivius mail, see on their contact webpage on livius.org)
  • (mail title)

Agreement request for the use by wikipedia of pictures loaded in wikimedia commons from http://www.livius.org under the GFDL license.

  • (Mail body)

Ref: Agreement request for the use by wikipedia of pictures loaded in wikimedia commons from http://www.livius.org under the GFDL license.

Dear Mr Lendering

Being working on the developpment of Iran’s projects on Wikipedia, I am updating 5 of your remarquable pictures loaded in the wikimedia Commons In order to complete some articles’s iconographies and substancialy improve the quality of their contents.

A link to Livius was added in all the picture's frames in the wikipedia articles, and one other shall be added at the end of the "see also" chapters in all the articles illustrated by the concerned pictures. The source of each picture is identified in their information page in the Wikimedia Commons as follows : "Picture taken by Marco Prins and Jona Lendering (www.livius.org)."

The term of use of each picture shall be documented such as follows : "GFDL" license, with the added following mention "With permission granted by the authors to download, copy, re-format and redistribute the pictures for use on computers, computer networks or as a printed publication, provided that no fees are charged for their distribution".

To clear the conditions of such pictures's use in wikipedia, a complete procedure requiers me to check the agreement of their authors by mail clearly identifying the pictures and the page where they've been loaded from, and clearly expressing their agreement with their use under the GFDL license.

The pictures are listed below as:

I'd appreciate if you could let me know wether you agree or not with the above terms. If yes, please mail me back your agreement with a copy of the lines above. A copy of your answer will then be sent to the wikipedia's administrator in charge of the procedure.

In any case of disagreement from you with the above terms, I'll obviously remove straight away all the above pictures from the wikipedia pages as from the wikimedia commons. A confirmation of such removal will be sent to you as soon as it is completed.

Sincerely yours

Signature (including First name, Last name, adress, mail)

Step 3

[edit]

Waiting Jona Lendering's answer Pentocelo 09:38, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done Jona Lendering is usually fast, but this time was faster than ever. He obviously gently accepted the request. I Thanked Jona lendering for his courtesy and generosity by sending him another mail. Pentocelo 13:33, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

anonymised Copy of his answer (I've deleted my name etc...) Notice that as asked, he copied the initial mail:

Dear Mr. X, dear X,

Of course I agree! I feel honored, and your request makes me happy. This Monday started badly, and now I'm in an excellent mood again.

Step 4

[edit]

✓ Done Contact an administrator of wikipedia's support team in charge of the OTRS procedures, on his talk page. For you, better if he is working on en. or es.wikipedia. For this time, I've contacted a french one with who I have already worked: Céréales Killer. He might answer asking to send a mail (including the copy of the mail exchange) to the wikipedia support team. Once he told to do so, send the mail. The wikipedia support team response might give an OTRS number if everything's OK Pentocelo 13:33, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Step 5

[edit]

Waiting for answers and number, will have it very soon. Pentocelo 13:33, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done, OTRS ticket number is 2007022010005941

Step 6

[edit]

OTRS tagging

  • in the commons: Apply the model {{PermissionOTRS-ID|2007022010005941}} and {{GFDL}}, in each picture's Licensing folder. I do it for the Image:cyrus_cilinder.jpg I loaded today (adding the things discussed below), you are to complete that for the other images ;-)
  • for every wikipedia articles using your OTRS pictures,
* tag the top of their talk page with another model defining the source (livius and identifying the ticket). You can find such model available in the concerned wikipedia OTRS pages. The models might eventually differ according to the wiki (es. en. fr. ). It might avoid you to be permanently questioned about the copyrights out of the commons. It requires that you regularly check the use of your pictures through the "check linked pages fonction" in the pictures info pages of the commons.
  • Add a link to livius in the comment of all the pictures frames, and in the "see also"" or External links of the articles

See for example the Persepolis page on fr.wiki. and its Talk page.

The end

[edit]

Hoping that my bad and stupid reaction is now forgiven (I should have thinked first before writing), I am ready to help you in any case you need. Friendly yours. Pentocelo 09:44, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bigger Cylinder image

[edit]

No problem at all, as it is just the same picture but with a different size. Just to prevent any discussion about that: It is better reloading the bigger one,and apply the same OTRS number, but with the added mention in the description folder "resized image of the former original image Cyrus cilinder s .jpg for wich the OTRS permission (see below) was granted by the authors allowing its use under the GFDL". Add then also an external link to the former little image in the livius concerned page, still in the description folder. No contest shall be seen as the situation is made crystal clear for all. In the extreme case of a persistent contest, I might just ask J Lendering if he agrees with the image replacement and send a copy to the wikimedia support team to be archieved with the OTRS mail (it is better doing the procedure with the same persons in the support team) Pentocelo 08:25, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PS: Don't forget to request also a deletion for the Image:Cyrus Cylinder.png

✓ Done Picture loaded Image:cyrus_cilinder.jpg, and description was made as said above Pentocelo 10:42, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
