Hello, AllenMcC.!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hallo AllenMcC,

Discussion you might be interested in

[edit]

Hello. There is a current discussion at the Wikipedia Help Desk about a publication using an image of yours without proper attribution under CC-By-SA. Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Help_desk&oldid=354846136#Possible_CC-noncompliance I have used the permanent link as you have not edited her in over 5 months, so I figured you might not get this message until long after the fact. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:52, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! --Allen McC. (talk) 14:06, 9 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, glad to see you got the message timely. The image now has proper attribution after three rounds of emails. First they placed "Courtesy Wikimedia Commons". I spoonfed them the CC-BY-SA requirements after that and, as I imagine you've seen, the image in the article] is now attributed to you and properly mentions the license. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:19, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

The Photographer's Barnstar
Dear Mr. McCloud,

I love your image of the Lorentzian wormhole and was hoping to use it in a book of my poems coming out next summer. I realize it is in the Creative Commons, but I'm seeking written permission because of the "Share Alike" license, which the publisher will likely not be able to issue to the entire book. The image would, of course, have proper attribution to you. Please let me know. Thanks! Sincerely, Nathan Hoks nshoks (at) gmail (dot) com Nshoks (talk) 20:56, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can I use your Alcubierre image?

[edit]

Hi Allen, I write for a children's science magazine called Double Helix. I'm putting together a story about faster than light transport, and I wanted to use your image of alcubierre warp field. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alcubierre.png

I also wanted to combine it with a spaceship I found on a stock image site, but I can't share that image under the CC-BY-SA license.

Can I please use your image in our magazine?

And if yes, what credit should I give you?

King brown snake image

[edit]

Hi AllenMcC., I have been improving the article on king brown snake on en.wiki. I was wondering about this photo as it looked a bit odd (its eyes are cloudy) - was it a specimen, was it dead or taxidermied or is it overexposed (and alive)? (nice photo BTW) Cheers, Casliber (talk) 05:33, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

File:LeeuwenhoekPronunciation.ogg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
